Having a glass of wine?

I was just curious if any of you guys after you got to your second trimester had a glass of wine? I've been reading about it and I hear people say different things.
My mother in law has been here all weekend. I could REALLY use a glass of wine today when she gets her nasty butt out of my house.

Re: Having a glass of wine?

  • I haven't yet had a glass of wine (I'm 17 weeks) but am eager to hear others' answer to this.  My OB is of the "no safe amount" school, but many of my friends have been told that a glass a week is fine once out of the 1st tri.  I have been craving a nice crisp glass of sauvignon blanc on these warm summer evenings...
  • Loading the player...
  • 1/2 to 1 glass of wine per week past 1st tri is ok according to 2 doctor friends of mine... We were just talking about this yesterday! I personally would not touch liquor either like PP said.

  • I've had about 1/2 a glass... My doctor has said a glass every now and then is perfectly fine. My biggest reservation about having a glass is what those around me might think or say (like out at dinner at a restaurant or at some kind of event), even though I know I shouldn't care and just do what is right for me. The half glass I did have was when I was over at my parents' house, because I know they feel the same way as I do.

  • I was talking with friends about this this summer, and we were commenting on how what you're told to avoid during pregnancy is so cultural. I don't know for sure, but I would guess it's very unlikely that women in Italy and France go a solid nine months without a glass of wine or that women in Japan don't have sushi for nine months. That would be like us being told we couldn't eat bread the entire time we were pregnant! I do think an occasional glass of wine wouldn't hurt anything, and I probably will at some point, but I also agree that I might feel self-conscious about it in front of other people.
  • I have has a few sips of my husbands wine on 2 occasions now. I plan to keep it extremely moderate (a few sips once a month, as needed). I am not against but like a PP said, I do worry about the cultural stigma.

  • I'm in the never, ever school of thought. No amount of alcohol has been proven safe, so for me that's a risk that I'm not willing to take. It is a sacrifice that I'm happy to make in order to do what I can to make sure that this baby is healthy. I'm also not a very big drinker to begin with though, so it is honestly an easy thing for me to give up. I imagine it would be harder for someone who likes to have wine with dinner or something like that.

  • I've had sips here and there of my husband's wine, but I have yet to actually have a glass of my own. As much as I really want to, I would also feel incredibly guilty doing so. I'll probably just wait until this bun is out of the oven.

Yes. Once I hit 2nd tri I have allowed myself to enjoy the occasional small glass of wine..like 4 oz. Very small but very delicious. My older sons are healthy and fine. My friend who is a pedi said you would have to drink an entire bottle of wine every night for 2 weeks to actually damage the baby and cause FAS. I'm not about to test that theory, but if I want to have a small glass of wine after a stressful day or to celebrate something with friends or DH, then I do. I don't drink liquor at all (not even when I'm not pregnant).

  • I'm in the small glass here and there camp. I didn't drink a drop with DD and can understand that side too, it really isn't a big sacrifice to make. This time, idk if it's because I'm more relaxed about the baby or if i'm more busy/stressed this time in general, but a small glass of wine in the evening with DH is so relaxing and a relaxed mama is good for the baby too!

  • I didn't do it with DD and I probably won't with this LO. I don't care if others do it, it just isn't for me. Besides, before I got my positive wine had already started tasting off to me. I don't think I would enjoy the taste right now.

  • I only just started liking wine after my second baby so this is the first pregnancy I've really wanted any. That said, I will likely not drink any just because it's not something I drink often anyway so holding out for 9 months isn't a big deal. I would be comfortable having a few glasses though.

  • I waited until the 2nd trimester to have a 1/2 glass of wine. I waited until the 3rd trimester with DD to have a 1/2 glass every two weeks or so. I understand why people abstain from alcohol. Personally, I am not concerned with a small amount every once in a while. I agree with PPs in that I would not have hard alcohol, but beer and wine is okay in my book.

FWIW, I usually sip on my wine very slowly and will drink a lot of water with it. My 1/2 glass last weekend lasted through our two hour dinner (I also drank a liter of water). The waiter did not even blink when I ordered my wine, it is definitely more common to drink during pregnancy in Europe.

Women should do what they feel comfortable doing.

  • I Love wine. But I am in the never ever school of thought I couldn't imagine having your growing a baby inside and drinking at all. There's no way I would put some wine in a bottle and feed it to my baby and its kind the same thing with a baby inside u it gets what u get. So I will wait the 9 months and have some wine when baby is on the outside

    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • I had a 2oz pour about 2 weeks ago and I have had sips of my husband's wine and other drinks every now and again.

  • I'm a huge wine drinker. I did not however have any alcohol 1st trimester. But I do occasional will have a glass of wine with DH at dinner. I honestly think its a personnel preference. So me maybe a glass of wine every 2 weeks or more. I've known many friends who have had glasses of wine occasionally while pregnant and all their kids are perfectly fine.
  • Ugh, of course it will not let me edit my statement, but what I was trying to add is

Putting wine in a bottle and giving it to your child =/= having the occasional small amount wine while you are pregnant-but again I understand why women chose to abstain and I respect that.

To each their own, but I respectfully disagree with the bolded statement.
Yeah if the bolted statement were true that would apply to pretty much every food. I wouldn't feed my baby ice cream or Root Beer either but you better believe I consume those on a daily basis.

To answer the original question, not drinking alcohol is pretty much the only food/drink related thing that I follow. My OB is very liberal (everything fine in moderation) except when it comes to alcohol. Plus it's just not that big of a deal for me not to drink. Now ask me again when everyone else is enjoying Christmas Ale and I might change my mind ;)

This. I'm eating chips ahoy cookies right now and try are delicious and for me, guilt-free. But I would never mash them up and feed them to my baby.

I believe it's ok to have a glass of wine here and there while pregnant. However, I have chosen to remain in the never ever camp with both my pregnancies thus far.
  • I eat sushi, cold cuts and drink a cup of coffee or two a day. I will not, however, drink any amount of alcohol. I am in the no amount is safe corner.

  • When I was preggo with DD, I was matron of honor in my bf's wedding. Since I was 5 months along, I decided to indulge in a glass of wine for toasts and things. I personally felt ok with it and warned everyone up front not to judge me. You just have to decide if its worth it. Is it going to make you worry like crazy from now til January? Or would it not bother you? It didn't bother me in the slightest and still take sips of DHs beer every now and again

  • I had half a glass of bubbles and oj about a month ago, a weak mojito with Mexican a fortnight ago and a beer a couple of days ago, all were delish!! I'm not really showing yet, but my 2 friends I was with kinda made a big deal about the beer, so I guess a drink in public is out now because I was so embarrassed.

My dr said 1-2 a week is totally fine. Though I will limit that to maybe 1 a fortnight. Though I have had such a depressingly upsetting weekend I feel like a wine will be in order tonight! (It's only 7am here, prolly a little early)
  • Dangit, now all I can think about is a nice glass of wine.

  • I had one sip of ale a few weeks ago. My dad bought Redd's Apple Ale (seriously... Buying some of that after baby!).  I have not drank alcohol during this pg otherwise.  However, my mother had very serious blood pressure issues while pg, and many others in my family have as well.  If my blood pressure gets bad, I have been told by my doctor that a glass of red wine is perfectly ok and can help with my blood pressure.  I think it's a personal choice. I wouldn't go out drinking, or have a wine cooler every night, but a small glass of wine ever week or other week... I'm personally ok with.

I have to say, my favorite thing about this post was how awesome everyone has been!  It's a very personal choice and while we all may disagree I thought everyone was so nice about voicing their opinions!!!

I live in New Zealand, and fortnight is such a normal thing haha! What would you say instead, every 2 weeks? Bi-monthly?
Having a bi-monthly drink doesn't sound nearly as bad as every fortnight...
  • @tesskerr, until I read Game of Thrones, I had no idea how long a fortnight was! HAHAHA! I had to ask my hubby.  No, it's not something we say in northwestern US.  We usually refer to it as every 2 weeks! :D

Right?!? That is all I want now.

I won't have any wine/beer until I get to my third trimester.  I know a lot of the vital development is happening in the second trimester.  I'm don't judge when people choose to indulge in a drink during the second or first trimester; as long as people are responsible it doesn't bother me.
  • I will steal a sip off of hubbies beer and I tried to have a 1/4 of a glass of wine the other day but it just doesn't taste good to me. To each his (her) own...
  • If I'm offered a glass, I will gladly accept, regardless of what trimester I am in. I believe in everything in moderation. I've never been one to not eat anything during pregnancy either.

  • I'll drink a 1/2 glass a week in 2nd tri+ if I'm in the mood. I'm not a big drinker to begin with so it really doesn't hit me often, but I would drink it and not feel guilty in the LEAST. I understand peoples' concerns, but to compare drinking occasionally to FAS is ridiculous. I think there are much bigger dangers out there than an infrequent small glass of wine.
    photo newsig2_zps17ef14af.jpg
  • I avoided alcohol during 1st tri. However, I've enjoyed a small glass a few times a week since. Here in Europe, no one looks twice. My OBGYN here believes in moderation across the board and has specifically said wine/beer/champagne are OK.

I really wanted a glass when we were out a few nights ago, but was worried about the social stigma so I decided against it.
