I an on board with LiliD. That email was for showing off purposes only and is tacky.
That crappy shirt was on the Today show. Al and Natalie did not care for it. I agree that what is upsetting is the message stores and the media send to girls. I know so many middle school girls who don't want people knowing they are good at math or science. The message they get is that being smart doesn't make you popular, and these shirts perpetuate that idea.
I am Bumping from a restaurant where I ate lunch alone after going to sidewalk sales all morning. I have many new clothes! And spices, a Christmas tree topper, and shelves for DD's room. Boom!
Honestly, I find comments like this far more detrimental to gender equality than an insipid children's place t-shirt.
BTW that t-shirt is trash, I just think insinuating that a person's lady parts are making her irrational is not a great thing to do.
Also, the BMW email was clearly to show off his new shiny expensive thing, but I don't think it wouldn't bother me too much. People get excited when they get new things, and it sounds to me like he was more tone deaf to the way the email would come off than he was trying to be a jerk. But I also don't know your BIL. Maybe he's just a jerk.

While you're in that corner, learn how to spell the word 'aesthetics'.

Actually, I agree with her. I hate that "are you on the rag" thing. Along with my least favorite curse word... see you next tuesday. I *hate* when people use that.
I don't think asking someone if they're on their period equates calling someone a "see you next Tuesday." That's a little bit of a leap.

If you don't like the shirt, don't buy it. Why make a fuss? There are stereotypes all over, doesn't mean we have to live up to (or down to, in this case) them.
FFFC: I will only assist my child through college financially if he gets a science/math degree. If he really has a passion for the arts, he can pay for it on his own. Also, I don't care if he goes to college or not, as long as he is a skilled worker, like an electrician or a machinist.

Exactly. It's masogynistic and perpetuates the notion that women, by virtue of her reproductive organs, are lesser.
Also, it's an easy low blow insult. Come on, that thing about crying in the corner...I mean, that's calling out for far more pin pointed responses.
Holy cow, someone is touchy today. Or can I not say "holy cow?" Am I insinuating that a cow is better than humans if I grant it as being "holy?" That's deep, Kream...real deep.

@kikimo I don't get offended if a guy asks it. Actually, usually the reason I am being grumpy is because of PMS. I wouldn't say it if I got offended if others did.

I'm sorry, but I think most people who get BMWs are probably showing off. My little cousin's (20 years old) fiance's grandpa bought one for her. She wanted one, and whatever baby wants baby gets. My aunt tends to slip that into conversations whenever possible. You know, gotta brag about about how "well" your young daughter is doing!

Wow... really? I just find it so degrading. Sorry. You're not going to change my mind on this one. Because I like you and respect you a lot, I won't say it around you. I don't get offended by things easily I guess.

When my cat was a kitty maybe three months old I had way too much wine and went to sleep. I was leaving for work the next morning and she didn't come whine at the door when I left. Shear panic set in and me and my GF we tearing up my apt. I thought she had somehow managed to get outside and was gone forever. . . . My GF heard her whining in my closet . . . she had been there all night.
I gave LO part of my Twinkie last night and I am pretty sure she thought it was the best thing ever.
I told SO I had to go to my Moms to drop off a rug, which I did. I also may have noticed an open bottle of wine in her fridge that I didn't want to go bad since she is on vacation for a ten days. An hour of RHONJ and a glass of wine later, I went home without saying a word to SO.

I'm quoting myself here.
Something funny about this little story: her fiancé is my ex. I dated him on and off for 2 years. He's lazy, he cheats, he's an asshole, and he's 27 years old and he's never had a job. She stays with him because his grandparents give them anything they want.
Her sister is also a gold digger. She's 23 and is on her 2nd marriage to another rich older dude.
My aunt (their mother) is so proud of them.

Maybe I'm only half serious about it. I love music and play the saxaphone, but I really don't see anyone except those that are exceptionally talented being able to make it in the music industry because it is so cut throat. If he is exceptionally talented, I don't see how he wouldn't be able to pay his own way to college if that is what he wants. If he's not, being a hobby musician is a viable option and he can learn a trade that hopefully (fingers crossed) won't be outsourced.

@sadeathe The arts don't just include music, and there are lots of things you can do with those degrees. Part of me wishes I leaned towards something artsy instead of Culinary. I could have a great career in Orlando with that.

Glad someone jumped on this! What is wrong with a liberal arts education? We probably won't be able to pay for much of Charlotte's college, but if we could, we would support her goals unconditionally.
Wow that got way more dramatic than I thought it would.
@lilidragon my response to you was merely to say that I did not call you ignorant and I do not think you are just that particular statement. I actually usually agree with most of what you say.
The implying I was an idiot and crying in a corner comment was an attempt at sarcastically saying "while I don't appreciate being insulted just because we have a difference of opinions I am not going to get in an up rage over it" Maybe I need to work on my sarcastic internet voice.
Also, I am the first to admit I am a horrible speller but moblie sucks at spellchecking so I miss things. If that makes my opinions worthless so be it.
If you don't like the shirt, don't buy it. Why make a fuss? There are stereotypes all over, doesn't mean we have to live up to (or down to, in this case) them.
This particular stereotype is applicable to this board, seeing as how we are women. And some of these women have daughters, who in the near future will have friends who are wearing shirts like these, or may even want to wear it themselves.
I'm throwing my weight behind the "don't blame my period for having an opposing opinion" camp. DH does this and it offends me. You could argue I'm extra touchy on the topic because I'm ragging right now, but then we'd be stuck in a losing cycle. Pun intended!
The arts can have practical, wage earning applications. If you have a real day dreaming creative type, it's possible they won't go to or finish school anyway (not that they'll be a bum, but structured learning may not be their thing). I have a cousin like this, not generalizing, just one example. His parents paid for a top notch trade educ and he dropped out.
paying your way through college today AND studying is not very likely. I suppose you may be able to take out enough student loans on top of working, but then paying them back will suck.
I paid my way through school without student loans. I worked during the summers and researched available assistance programs. My department had waivers available based on ability and work ethic. I lived at home during my undergrad so I could pay for school. I worked my butt off during those years, especially during grad school. I have degrees in theatre arts with an emphasis in costume design.
While I am a classy intelligent well educated woman who says fuck a lot (although a lot less than before she had children), I would never wear that shirt. I think it's trashy. It's as bad as these shirts that I see around my campus.
I have undergrads... STUDENTS... male and female coming to class wearing these shirts. They are SO not appropriate. And yeah, I do judge my students when they wear these shirts.
Seriously??? How can they be taken serious wearing something like that? I was on facebook and a page that I like posted this shirt and it cracked me up because we were talking about shirts like this on here... https://www.facebook.com/aaman.fans.club... Typically, I am in the 'don't care, walk away' boat, but this caught my attention today since it was the topic on hand
I agree about asking women if they're "on the rag."
Sometimes I'm bitchy because I just feel like it. I don't need a hormonal excuse. Also, I don't like when a wan expressing her opinion of something = bitchy which in turn = on the rag.
Can I blame my runons and bad spelling on exhaustion and being mad at my D(umb)H? I just read most of my posts of today and they are mostly idiotic. Sorry.
For clarity, I don't agree with what the shirt says. I would discuss it with my child should she want to buy it. I would not buy it. And that would be the end of it.
Also, I know that musicians are not the only form of artists. I was giving an example. Anyhow, I'd like him to go into science/math because it's cool and a lot of fun. Of course I want him to be happy.
And part of me wonders why a person needs to go to college to be an artist? Exposure to new and different forms of art? Couldn't you just go to museums for that? Art exhibits?
I'm being serious, not snarky. I really want to know.
Edited for clarity

DH payed his way 100% his parents wouldn't even give him leftovers to take home if he was invited to their house for dinner on the rare occasion. He lived off $1 per day and never took out any loans and never had any debt. It is possible if you live with the bare minimum. I feel lucky my parents helped me out because what DH accomplished was not easy.
I couldn't imagine not supporting my kids through college. My parents didn't help me and I'm still bitter. They were bad though. They said they would pay and pulled the rug out from under me in time for me to sign up and become invested in a private school. They also didn't support me emotionally when I was making wedding cakes. I couldn't imagine being like that to my kid. Just find something you like and do it.

If you want to be an artist, you can go to college to gain technique, learn about history, to expand your knowledge, etc. Going to a museum doesn't exactly teach you those things. That's just looking at exhibits.
