Late night feeds

As I sit here and feed LO, I'm remembering the words of one of our doctors from our Saturday visit..."you shouldn't be feeding him during the night anymore". I was kind of surprised at this. He told me that he's not hungry but rather wants to be close to me. How do I know if this is actually true? I'm guessing I could play the pacifier game and see if he goes to sleep. He only gets up once to feed and its his longest feeding session so I feel like he needs it. (He eats 10-15 minutes compared to around 5 minutes during the day) But am I setting him up for getting used to being fed a lot at night? How often do you all feed your LO's at night? Should I start to break him of our motn feeding? I am a teacher so I will be going back to work in September and it would be nice to sttn.....

I forgot to mention that at his 2 month appt., he was in the 75th percentile for height and weight. Our 4 month appt. is on the 27th.

  • What I think is if they are eating... if he is swallowing the milk.. then he is hungry.

Right now I feed my son three times a night. Funny cause he slept for 8 hours straight since about a month old until 3 months old. When he was a newborn he only woke up once a night. So right now is worse than when he was a newborn.

I do not think I am setting him up for anything bad. I think he is barely getting out of that 4th trimester state, so he has a little ways to go before he can manipulate to get what he wants.

  • We have a 4-6 hour stretch of sleep and then we are up every two hours after that, until around 7 am. I have no plans of "breaking" his motn of the night feedings, wether if its just for comfort or he really is hungry. I was just reading a thread I think the title was sleep training, anyway I would read that because a lot of people expressed their views on sleep training. Everyone is different, just like every baby is different, meaning I don't think it's fair for a doctor to tell you he should be sleeping through the night. Just feel lucky it's only once!

  • My LO is going to bed at 8 and waking to feed about 5 or 6 so I consider this STTN. I agree with PP that if he's swallowing the milk then he's hungry and still needs that feeding.

  • I really don't mind waking up with him as I feel he is hungry and will sleep longer when he's ready. I put him down around 8:30 and he will sleep until between 2 and 4 which is pretty good. Thanks for your advice! :)

  • I agree with what others said about the MOTN feeding. If he is eating, then he is hungry and needs it. My LO eats once-twice a night. Sometimes, he will wake up more, but doesn't want to eat. He just wants to be rocked or wants the pacifier. Maybe I am spoiling my baby but he is only 15 weeks old.

I was reading in my baby 411 book about this. It also recommended cutting out the night feedings early. So we gave it a shot. Baby would stir around 2-3am but he wouldn't actually wake up screaming for milk so we'd just let him stir for a bit to see if he went back to sleep. Sure enough he did!! Now he's sleeping from 9:30 at night to 6:30 in the morning. We haven't had any issues with it. He takes more food during the day to make up for the skipped night feeding. He was better about it than me actually.. I'd wake you super engorged for the first few times.

The book also recommended early bed time. We were feeding him at 11 and putting him down and he'd be up again by 2 or 3. As soon as we started putting him down around 9 he started sleeping better.

EDIT: BTW, if he does wake up in the middle of the night crying for food I still feed him. I just give him the opportunity to fall back asleep if he's just stirring a little and not crying - where as before I would have gotten him up to eat if he was just stiring a bit and not crying.
