High-Risk Pregnancy

Are you changing what you eat while on bed rest?

So, just curious: are you changing what you eat while on bed rest? Of course I want to get my little person all the nutrients he needs in this last, weight-gaining phase of the pregnancy, but I've only been on modified bed rest for a week, and I feel like I'm gaining a lot of weight. Obviously I'm burning a lot less calories than usual. And also, since they have taken away my elliptical time, my prenatal yoga, and (way back in January) my WINE, I think I'm using eating as a source of pleasure/way to reduce stress. There have been really a lot of chocolate chip cookies while on bed rest.

Is that okay? I know too much sugar can be a problem for the baby, although I passed the blood glucose thing with no trouble. Anybody else in this same situation?

  • Most women lose weight while on BR. We lose muscle mass and eat less because digestion is slower. I've lost 12 pounds being stuck in this bed. I keep up with excersises for my arms and legs but I really don't eat alot of snacks unless they are high protein, like yogurt or cheese sticks.

  • I am actually losing weight on hospital bed rest. I just don't like eating and nothing sounds good. My doctor has been ok with it until this week since the babies are gaining appropriately. They are emphasizing proteins and calorically dense foods for me.

  • Yes, but not because I want to.  I wouldn't say that I'm eating healthier by any means.  I eat what people bring to our house.  My DH doesn't eat left overs so I eat fatty (delicious) meals a few days in a row.

I'm no health nut, but as long as the OB doesn't freak out about my weight, I'm not worried.  I know I lose a lot of weight breast feeding. ha.  ::shoves cheesy mashed potatoes in mouth::

  • I'm not losing or gaining I lost my initial 7 pounds before BR when I got pregnant and so far I have only gained 3 pounds the whole 25 weeks and I have been on BR for six weeks so far. I dont keep much food down so I am worried that the LO isn't gaining anything. But with my first daughter I only gained 7 pounds total and she was a healthy 6 pounds. My doctor told me with her the baby was feeding off my fat I already have. So hoping my new LO is fine too.
  • Yeah, I have days like that, too...
  • I just eat what I want. I have done that my whole pregnancy. I lost 10 pounds the first week of bed rest, but that was because the dang doctors in the hospital wouldn't let me eat. (It was because they were worried I was in labor) I have gained 5 of it back.
I would really just eat how you would normally eat while pregnant. Get some heathy snacks, and try to eat lots of protein.

  • Sometimes I have a week where I don't gain anything. Other weeks I gain a pound or two. As long as your doctor is ok with what you're gaining or losing it's fine. I don't eat perfect all the time. I try to make healthy and high protein food choices, but if someone brings me sweets, I'm not saying no.

  • My weight gain stalled a little bit when I first went on bed rest. I'm back to gaining about a pound a week now. My appetite has definitely decreased.
