Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Does anyone else do this?

I put DD down for her morning nap about an hour ago, and after fussing a bit, she got nice and quiet. I'm constantly paranoid that quiet = not breathing, so of course I go check on her. She was apparently knocked out, until my dumba$$ walked up our creaky stairs. Now that she got that taste of sleep (that lasted all of 5 minutes), she wants to party. Am I the only FTM who constantly needs to check to make sure my LO is actually breathing while they're sleeping? I can't tell you how many times a night I reach over and put my hand on her belly or sneak into her room while she's napping to make sure.

Re: Does anyone else do this?

  • Last night out DD fell asleep around 8:30 and we gave her bottle around 9:30 while she was still asleep mind you.  She didn't wake up till 7:30 the next day of course when I went in to check on her!  She sleeps through the night but I still find myself going in and checking on her to make sure everything is ok.  You're not alone!!!

  • Thanks! I almost always end up waking her up when I go in to check on her, which obviously sucks for both of us, her more than me. My husband told me the one day "our bodies were meant to take naps" or something to that effect, and he's right. It's just soooo hard!!

  • DD was born at 27 weeks and spent 3 months in the NICU. Because of that im the queen or checking up on her. I use to sit and stare at her chest to make sure it was rising and falling. If it's something that really worries you, you could get the movement monitor. I love ours and it really does put my mind at ease.

  • Yup.  I've done it.  I do it.  My mom tells me she did it with me, and she does it with my son when she's sitting.  It's what we do.

  • Haha, DH told me that sometimes, in the middle of the night, he'd lean over me and check on her in her co-sleeper. It's comforting to know he does it, too. It'll probably get easier once she's older, I just think now the hardest part is moving her from our room into hers because I won't be able to just reach over and feel her belly.
  • I don't worry about it as much as I thought I would, but I can see him breathing on the video monitor.

  • Hehe! Yep. I kinda compromised. We have a baby monitor and I've set both volumes as high as possible and put her end in the crib. I can hear her breathing, which reassures me. But heaven forbid she squirm enough to roll up against it or kick it! Sounds like a bomb going off in my ear. (Especially in the middle of the night)
  • I still worry about that, but we have a video monitor. So I can just look over at him every so often and see him breathing.

  • When DS first learned to roll from back to tummy at 4 months, yes, I checked on him all.the.time.  He kept rolling onto his tummy in the crib, and ended up sleeping face down.  I was so worried about SIDS (since he was only 4 months and still within the SIDS risk age) then!  AFter 2 weeks of that, I finally relaxed.

Now at almost 9 months, I check on him once in a blue moon... we only have audio monitor, so I'll have to quietly sneak a quick peek into his room.

I think part of my problem is that when she naps, the room is relatively dark, and you can't really see enough detail with the night vision to tell if she's breathing, especially when she's on her side.
  • I did it (and of course woke her up)-- once.  After that, I gotta trust that she can breath on her own.  her sleep (and my sleep!) are too important!

Plus, once they hit 6 months, the risk of SIDS goes way down, so my worry went way down, too : )

  • Yes. Totally. I need to get a monitor so I'm not so obsessive.

Also, our wooden floors creak. :-P

Yeah, don't even get me started on our creaky floors. I swear DH finds the LOUDEST spots to walk on in the morning when he's getting ready for work and steps on them full force.
