Blood pressure creeping up at 36 weeks?

Hello ladies, today I'm 36 weeks and I had my weekly appointment with my OB.  Sorry this may be long....

We did the non stress test today and they did all the normal stuff including checking my blood pressure.  It's always been great but today he said it has started creeping up.  He's sending me for some bloodwork and a urine sample and then I go back tomorrow for an ultrasound.  When my urine was tested today there was no protein in it.  I've been having some really bad swelling in my legs and feet though for the past month.  Anyways, I'm lucky enough that I'm still working 32 hours a week.  He mentioned I may have to cut back even more or quit working all together.  He's concerned about preeclampsia.... I may be jumping the gun because we don't have the results back yet but I am nervous!

Anyone else deal with a similiar issue?  What did your OB do, put you on bedrest?  Induce?

TIA!!!

Re: Blood pressure creeping up at 36 weeks?

  • Kinda similar, but it was protein in my urine and borderline BPs. I started having issues at 24w and then things started to progress at 32w.

At 32w, I was admitted to the hospital for a wkend of observation. When it looked like I was stable, I was released but monitored v closely. I had to take my BP twice a day and get bloodwork weekly. I knew what symptoms to look out for and knew to go straight to L and D if I felt off.

I was working FT and the suggestion was made to work from home twice a week but no bed rest or any other restrictions. My water ended up breaking at 34w, but the end game was to not let me go past 37 to 38 weeks.

Hopefully everything comes back good for you!!

  • My BP went up at 32 weeks. Congrats for making it to 36 weeks without any complications. Anyway, my BP was up at my OB appointment for my first nst. Everything looked good with the babies but doc sent me to L&D for blood work. Get to the hospital, they hook me up to the monitor, start an IV and draw blood. After about 2 hours BP has dropped, but still higher than normal. They sent me home to do a 24-hour urine collection. The labs and urine looked good - no protein. Anyway, I went through the same routine 4x in 2 weeks (every time I went to the doc). Doc took me off work at 34 weeks but didn't put me on bed rest or induce...just told me to take it easy. My BP was running about 160/90 at doc's office but then would go down to 140/70 at the hospital . I had always planned on having a C-section (had one with my daughter) and doc was still planning on waiting until 37w but I went into labor at 36w3d. I had a lot of swelling in the last month or so as well and it took a few weeks to lose most of the water. My BP also stayed elevated after delivery so I was on IV magnesium for 24 hours after delivery and on an oral BP med for about a month after delivery. I was also in the hospital a day or so longer than I expected after I had the boys. In the end the boys were healthy and eventually my body got back to normal, but it took longer than it had with my daughter. Good luck to you!

  • my bp crept up slowly over a few weeks. it finally hit super high very suddenly at 35w 4 and 5d. i was sent for monitoring the first day and released because my bp stabilized and my bloodwork and urine was ok. the next day i was sent back because it was even higher. i stabilized for a few readings then would have a high reading, it would go on like that for a few hours. then i hit 191/110. i was admitted. i delivered via c-section 35w6d. i never had terrible bloodwork, but the bp's were crazy. i also had high bp post delivery for about 6 to 8 weeks before it finally went away. i had to take meds for it.

  • My BP is usually really low 90/60 and it gradually started climbing from 33 weeks on. I had lots of swelling starting around them too.  I was but on bed rest at 32.5 weeks until 35 weeks.  I'm not sure it it's just a coincidence, but once bed rest started, so did the swelling.  At 36w6d my BP finally reached 140/90 and I had protein in my urine.  We went in for an induction that night and the twins were born the next day.  My BP was all over the place until about 2 weeks after the babies were born.  All of our NSTs and U/Ss were normal and looked great. The babies were born healthy with no complications for them.

  • Thanks ladies!  My bloodwork came back good but my bp is still elevated.  He pulled me from work for maternity leave yesterday and I go in again this morning to check my blood pressure.

He'd like to get me to 37-38 weeks but did mention induction if we need to.  The girls are almost 5 lbs (according to ultrasound) so he said they would be fine if they came now.  Hoping being a couch potato yesterday has helped :)

  • My BP started getting high at 32 weeks.  I was already on bed rest for a shortening cervix at that point so they just made it stricter.  I never tested positive for protein in my urine but I delivered at 36 weeks because of my really high BP (I think the highest was 170/120).  I got an at home monitor (not too expensive) and found that laying on my left side is what kept my BP in check the best.  It must have been the positioning of the babies.  If you can get an at home monitor try different positions and see if you can find one that helps.  I would get an awful headache when it would spike really high, which would let me know that I needed to check it and stay on my left side for a while.

I'm glad your bloodwork came back good! I bought a home BP machine for like $30 on amazon and it was great for peace of mind. Also, if you do have to be induced soon, 36w is great! I only made it to 34w [for reasons unrelated to pre e, my water broke] and while I know my situation isn't predictive of yours, my boys were 5 and 5 1/2 lbs and needed only 13 days in the NICU.

    Good luck!

  • Oh yeah, like pp said, laying on my side worked pretty well for me too. babies wouldn't stay on the moniotr there, but at home, you can stay on your left for a while.
