When are you telling boss/co-workers?

I don't really want to tell anyone yet but I'm super bloated on account of eating so much and I feel like they already suspect something is up. Also I don't want to look like I'm trying to hide it(I am) by waiting too long.

In my 9th week and told my boss today. He was super excited and said he was trying to hold in his giddiness. I felt like I hadn't been myself lately and wanted to fill him in. He was very supportive, told me to stay positive, and said if I can take longer than my 12 weeks, to do so (if I have extra vacation and sick time). I'm waiting to tell coworkers until after telling family and close friends after our 12 week u/s.

  • I will tell work on maternity leave. Just kidding :) But I plan to wait as looooong as possible. My boss doesn't have a family and I don't anticipate a great deal of support.

There's only four of us in my office and we are super close, so I told them already. I don't plan on telling anyone else at the agency or my supervisors for as long as possible.

Didn't tell until 16weeks last time and hopefully if I don't show too much I will wait till around the same time again. I am in no rush to tell just yet.

  • I already did because my boss wondered why I was always feeling sick to my stomach and I called in once before I knew I was pregnant. She wondered why as it is not like me.

  • I had to tell them at about 8 weeks - I was calling in sick a lot. Now I'm experiencing other issues (non-baby related) that came up during my first u/s. They've been nothing but 150% supportive - SO happy I told them when I did! Still haven't told co-workers but probably will soon - they're beginning to wonder about all my absences.
  • I told my managers right away.. then at the next meeting one of the ladies blurted out that I am pregnant.. which I don't mind because we are open about the pregnancy.. I am super excited about it and can't keep it a secret, lol.

  • My boss already knows so since I need time off for appts and when I am not able to come in.  Co-workers will know when I start showing enough for them to figure it out.  I won't be announcing, they can either suspect, or they can ask at some point but I am not offering up the info.

Why does it matter if it looks like you're hiding it?  It's your news to share or not share....they can suspect all they want, but until you're ready to tell, either deny or keep the news to yourself.  Once you tell you can't go back.  Co-workers can be really annoying when your pregnant, if I were you I would hold out until as long as possible.

I'm waiting until after my first trimester. I teach yoga and pilates so at that point there will be a few things I won't be able to demo in my class and will need to have an explanation. I also have a dog walking business that I need to scale back on so those clients will be finding out this week. I'm not a good liar so I'm just going to tell them the truth.

  • I want to tell everyone at work soon, because I am excited and don't know how long I can keep the secret.  However, I think many of my supervisors will not be excited.  I work in an office that frowns on time off that is more than a week at a time and we don't even have a maternity policy in place. I causally asked one of my coworkers that has been there a lot longer than me what the maternity policy is and she replied that she has no clue because no one in my office has ever been pregnant.  Very nervous that they will find some way to replace me if I request too much of a maternity leave and almost positive it will be the bare minimum with no pay.  So, in my case, the longer I can wait the better.  Luckily my symptoms have been somewhat mild, and mostly just tired, so no inquiries about it yet :)

  • I already told my manager because of needing time off for appointments. She wasnt thrilled, which I was pretty upset about. I won't be telling coworkers until after the first tri just to be safe.
  • I suspected my boss wouldn't be thrilled because we have quarterly reports that take a month. So no matter when, I will miss one. Now we just got this MONSTER project, which I will be there for, but she is already worried about the ONE day off I need to take. Its going to be hard when I tell her there are multiple appointments...

  • I agree with angelsnight. There's no 'hiding it'. Everyone not directly involved doesn't need to know your business unless/until it affects them. I told my office with DD when I was 19 weeks. I knew I was beginning to show and we're pretty close (yet I did not owe it to them to tell them). I had told one co-worker earlier, but he has 6 kids and I needed some support as I had constant migraines early on and somehow ended up with meningitis. This time around I'll probably tell them around 12 weeks. My then co-worker with 6 kids is now our office manager, so I know I'll have his full support with appointments and whatnot. This time around I'm also going to see about utilizing the leave share program over unpaid FLMA after using annual & sick leave (the government has NO maternity leave, at least not my Federal department), and I'll need my managers help to set it up. So, I'd say, don't burn any bridges, but if folks can't keep things to themselves, you should feel comfortable staying mum until you feel the time is right.

  • I'm waiting until 2nd trimester. I am the only female at my level and already had to tell my boss about my loss, so I am playing it safe.

Also, I don't want it to affect my allocation of work. I would be frustrated if I get less assignments because of it.

  • I had to tell my boss at week 8 because I was assigned to a patient with meningitis which is a no go. I'm disappointed that it had to come out so early and I'm just crossing my fingers she didn't spread it around.
  • My boss already knows. We put on summer festivals in our town which require a lot of physical labor as well as long days (20+hours). I told him before our first festival-which was good because I ended up getting sick and had to leave.

I will tell our whole staff after my u/s in 2 weeks. They all of course knew about my loss in February because I was out for my surgery and recovery. I think most of them have probably guessed, but I won't come out and announce until I've seen the baby :)
  • I'm waiting until after my NTScan in a couple of weeks. They will be happy for me, but I just took 4mo mat leave last fall and don't want to deal with all the 'already?!' questions (even though they know I wanted a couple close together because I'm 40). Luckily I WFH so I don't have to worry about covering my blump. I'm only telling at that point because it's obvious to look at me and I'm going to announce socially, and with some mutual friends I don't want to risk my boss hearing it from someone else.

  • I have already told the family I nanny for. Been working for them for almost 4 years and they feel like family so I was too excited to keep it in. They have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and got rid of all their baby stuff because they didn't want more. ...Well a week after I told them the news, they told me they are pregnant and a month ahead of me! Ooohmygoooodness! Going to work with my newborn, along with another newborn being there with the other two is going to be crazy!

  • My work environment is SUPER competitive so I will wait as long as possible.  I will most likely tell my bosses after my appt. on 8/13 but wait to tell the group until the end of Sept. if I am not showing.  Also, a good friend at work is getting married in Sept. and I don't want to steal her thunder.

  • I am in a weird situation. I am a contractor so my real supervisor is off site, but I work in an office with a ton of men and I have a sort of boss here. I told them all at 8 weeks. I knew I'd be going to appointments and I had called in sick once. They are all very supportive. My real boss I won't tell until after first tri since he won't see me or know if I pop out at lunch for a doctor's appointment. He was happy for me when I told him with DD so I'm sure he'll be fine with it.

  • I hadn't planned on telling anyone until the 12 wk mark.  Then I told my friends at work and I felt I had to tell my boss since I had to arrange the time off for my first 3 dr appts. and she's weird about ppl working odd hours/making up time.  So I figured if I told her I was preggo, then she would be more likely to let me do it the way I wanted with these 1st 3 appts. and not make me use all my vaca time.  Then a week later she said to me "you know, everyone knows your pregnant!" I was like "Shit, wtf? who have you been talking to that already knew?"  She wouldn't tell me, but then I figured the cat was out of the bag, so I haven't been hiding it since then.  For the record, she was wrong, EVERYONE did NOT know yet, and I even told a couple people myself yesterday.

  • I told my Boss on Monday, I am slowly telling people at work, mostly because my Blump is looking more baby than donuts so I would like to not be the topic of conversation at the water cooler LOL.  Since this is number 3 I am really not able to hide it at all and to be honest I don't care to :)

My Boss was happy for me and the coworkers that do know are being really helpful.  I work In the office of a production plant and sometimes I have to carry heavy boxes of Time sheets, and invoicing materials, from processing payroll and doing all the invoicing for the CS department, and thankfully there are some nice strong young men in the plant who are more than willing to help :).

  • I told my boss already because it helped to protect myrights should anything happen between now and then.  If they fire me - one can argue they knew about my pregnancy and moved on it.  OF COURSE i don't anticipate being fired.  I have a great deal of support here at work and a great deal of time off.  I also have a boss who has a child of her own and understand these things.  I have al ist of dr's appointments I know i'll want time off for - and she already approved them and appreciated the huge amount of notice.

  • I was going to wait until around 12 weeks. But I told my boss yesterday.

I have another family emergency going on right now and will have to leave town for a period of time (my MIL is very ill and will likely pass away soon). Since I am needing time off and my schedule is wacky, and because I'm having a hard time functioning between being devastated about my MIL, ecstatic about being pregnant, and dealing with exhaustion and m/s all at the same time, I wanted him to know.

He's very very happy for me and very supportive. I will wait to tell the rest of my team until closer to 10-12 weeks.

  • I work from home, thank goodness as the morning/afternoon/evening sickness has been horrible, so i can delay telling my mgr as obvi she can't tell. However I am waiting until i get over the 1st trimester stretch to tell... Alot of projects coming up and i dont need her extra frazzled in my ear.
  • I'm a teacher and plan on telling my principal when I go back for pd days, only because I have an ultrasound the next week that I need to leave for. Hopefully she takes it ok. I'm the 4th pregnancy for this school year.
  • I told my boss at 4 weeks! I know it was a bit risky but I do a lot of lifting etc around the office on the supplies etc & my fiancé really wanted me to say something early so that part of my duties could be passed on! Good thing I did because I got really sick a week after! Bad morning sickness & nausea. He was really supportive though & everyone in the office rides this roller coaster ride with me!!!! :)
  • I'm 9 weeks and some already know. I'm telling my boss at 12 weeks
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I'm in grad school. I told my advisor a few weeks ago because I wasn't getting anything done on my thesis. I'm going to wait until someone asks me for everyone else at school. I feel like they'll judge me for getting pregnant while I'm supposed to be focused on my work.
  • @rockopera I am so sorry about your MIL.
  • I'm going tell my boss after she comes back from vacations in three weeks. She has to sign all our leaves of absence, and my first prenatal appointment will be the week after that. Since I don't want to use my sick days and use instead the special prenatal extra off days we have at my work, I'll just tell her, even though I'll be 9 weeks pregnant at that time.

I am a horrible secret keeper and everyone at my work knew I was pregnant the day I took the test...at 3 weeks! I regret telling everyone though because it was so early no one wanted to be excited and it seemed like everyone wanted to discuss the chances of miscarriage. I'm a healthy 9 weeks now and everyone is much nicer about it.
  • @jhr2014. Why do people think it is okay to talk about negative "what ifs" or bad things that happened to them or someone they know as soon as they find out you're pregnant? This drove me crazy during my first pregnancy! I needed positive vibes, not all kinds of extra worst case scenarios to worry about. Sorry your coworkers weren't more supportive, glad to hear they've improved!
  • @leaMatt yes exactly! Someone said I wouldn't believe it until I see it...I thought what does that mean - don't have a baby shower because I haven't delivered yet?? My first weeks I was so afraid something terrible would happen that I was worried I would be laughed out of my 8 week appointment for an imagined pregnancy! Glad to have such positive vibes here thanks everybody!!! Sending some positivity your way too, everyone!
