STM's.. gift for other sibling?

How many STM's are buying a gift for the baby's older sibling(s)? I just saw something about this on Pinterest. I've heard of some people telling the older child the gift is from the baby which I think is cute. My son is only 3 (4 when baby is here) so he would believe that. If you are doing a gift, what do you plan to get??

  • I was thinking about doing this as well. I think maybe stuffed animal or book about bring home baby. Not sure yet. But I am also going to get a gift that my DD can give to baby too.

  •  We gave our 2.5 year old ds a kid tough digital camera and it was PERFECT! (a gift from baby #2 to ds.)

Ds also went to toys r us with us about a week before the birth and picked out a baby toy that plays music for his brother. We let him make a card and wrap it in the gift bag to give to baby on his birthday.

When they met for the first time our son was so excited to open his present and he took it out (we put batteries in before wrapping up) and starting snapping photos of his new brother. He still uses it a year later.

I like the camera idea because we are all taking so many photos of the baby it is nice to include the older sibling. He has actually taken some great photos.

    FTM weighing in here....

Ladies in my church typically give the older sibling a gift at the shower...But, I don't really think I would make it a super big deal about them getting a gift.  Maybe when I am packing their bag to take to the babysitters house while I'm in labor/first days in the hospital, I might make them a special bag with a new coloring book/crayons/doll...something small like that.  Nothing super huge or expensive...More of a, "Hey, you are going on an adventure and spending the weekend with So and so...Here is a special treat for you to enjoy while you are at their house."  Not "Mommy's having a new baby, so I'm going to give you a presnt."  Does that make sense?

Most of the stuff I see online are like this. A bag that says "Big brother" with coloring books and crayons, etc. I guess to keep them busy while they are with the babysitter/family waiting for baby. The main reason I am thinking about this is because I want him to transition as easily as possible with the new baby. He gets jealous when me or my MIL hold my sister's baby.

  • We will get something for our son but I have no idea what it will be.  Our son doesn't get super excited about too many "toys" so I will need to put a lot of thought into it.

  • I plan on doing this personal. Show them how important they are to you and the baby. I want it to be from the baby. It won't be big something small. I was thinking of a big sister book. I just know its hard going from all the attention to having to share.

That's a really cute idea. I like the idea of taking them to Babies R Us to pick out something for baby. I think we will do this also.

  • We've talked about getting her something like a necklace with both of their birthstones on it. She's very into jewelry right now. LOL Like most 9 year olds. Anyway, it would be from us to celebrate the birth of her brother, not from the baby. She's too old for that. We also might not do anything at all.
  • We won't be since DS will only be 20 months old. But I have a distinct fond memory from when I was a 4.5 year old and I got a "gift" from my new baby brother. I think it was a Rainbow Brite doll....score!!!

We'd like to get our DD something, she'll be 11 when her little sister gets here. I'm just not sure yet what we're going to her her.
  • We didn't do it for DS when DD was born because he was only 2 at the time, but I am considering it this time around.

  • We have pretty much don't the opposite. We take the girls to the store to buy the new baby something and when they 1st meet baby they give their little gift to baby. We always try and make it special, they can buy baby whatever they want that they think is special...with a price point of course. But this time we are not sure since our youngest wont be 2 yet. We r thinking older kids do same thing and we get matching gifts for new baby and our youngest.

    Last gifts from kiddos...

9 year old picked out the earrings she would wear when she got her ears pierced for 1st time and made her a headband.

4 year old picked her out a teddy bear and blanket she came home in.
  • Absolutely. I'm planning on putting together a bag of small toys--especially ones DS can play with independently for the first few days/weeks. I'll break out a new toy every day or so, as needed.

I also plan to have DS pick out something small for the baby.

  • When my second was born we gave my oldest a kids camera that took actual pictures when she came to visit at the hospital. We knew everyone would be taking pics of the baby so we wanted her to feel involved. She loved it. Not sure what we will do this time but we will definitely do something!

  • DD's first birthday is in September, and Christmas will be right around the corner when the next baby comes, so I think there will already be a gift overload.  I'm sure the grandparents will get gifts for both babies when the new one arrives, but I don't think DH and I will be getting one for DD.
