TTC - blocked fallopian tube

My husband and I were trying to conceive and after a few months, I decided to see my doctor to make sure everything looked alright.  My biggest concern, and I am not proud to say this, was that years ago, I'd had an abortion because me and my now-husband did not feel we were at a good place in our lives or relationship to have a baby.  Of course, I regret this choice more than ever, but I cannot change my past.   I told my doctor and she was very kind and very proactive in scheduling an SIS.  Unfortunately, hardly any saline made it through so she was unable to see much, but clearly there was blockage, so we moved forward with scheduling a laparoscopy.  I had that done last week, and when she injected the dye, she said it did not flow through my right tube, but also couldn't see blockage, so nothing was done to unblock it.  I asked her if this was due to the abortion and she said no.  I also asked if there was still a good chance I could conceive, and she said yes, my left tube was fine.  I'm frustrated not knowing what the blockage is and if it's always been there (if so, then I will feel a little more confident that I was able to get pregnant years ago).  I've also encouraged my husband to have his sperm tested, just to rule out that there could be any issues with him as well, that perhaps hadn't been issues in the past (he swears he's got varsity swimmers but who he has been stressed and depressed about work the past few months).  I made an appointment for him next week, so I am hoping we can keep it!  (I just found out we can use a special, $25 condom, so he better not have performance anxiety!!  lol)I am just wondering if anyone else out there has been able to get pregnant with one "functioning" fallopian tube, and your experience(s) with it.   And anyone who feels the urge to reprimand me for my past decisions, I beg you to not to; I'm already giving myself a hard enough time :( Thanks all!

Re: TTC - blocked fallopian tube

  • Number one, the past is the past.  We all have different skeletons in our closet that we are not proud of but they also played a role in making us who we are today.

Number two, you probably not find anybody on this board who has been successful getting pregnant with one tube as ~95% of us are still trying for our first.  The PAIF or SAIF boards would be more likely to help.  It is not impossible to do, as long as you ovulate regularly you still have 50% of the chance of a person with two functioning tubes.  Make sure that you are seeing an RE for your infertility care and not just an OB/GYN.

  • I'm so sorry you're about your circumstance. I have a confirmed left blocked tube, and RE says right is open but perhaps not functioning properly. We've tried to conceive naturally for over three years, most times ovulating from ovary on right side. We have moved on to IVF as I am 36 and don't want to waste any more time. I have read about many women getting pregnant with one tube. It is possible. Good luck!

Three ectopic preganacies in left tube in 1999, 2003 and 2004. HSG in 2010 concluded left tube blockage. IUI with femara in 2012 BFN. IVF #1 June 2013, 20 retreived, 14 mature, 12 fertilized via ICSI, one transferred, four frozen, BFN.  FET in September 2013 - BFN:( FET #2 April 2014 - BFP!!!!

  • Thank you, and I wish you the best of luck, as well.  I will be 33 this year and know that time is not on my side if nothing happens soon.  Unfortunately, we are not in a financial position to try IVF anytime soon, so we will continue doing what we do and see what his results show :)  I will also show the fertility specialist all of my files from my gyno and the operative report from the lap and perhaps he will have some additional insight.

     Again, good luck!!  :)

  • Who did your LAP surgery? Did they try to unblock the tube? Have you had any other testing, like to see if you are ovulating?

  • Rebecca Stern did the procedure.  She couldn't see the blockage, so no, they did not remove it.  I haven't had any other testing done and I'm not sure what more I CAN do with my insurance, because my insurance doesn't cover fertility.  So far, everything that's been done was able to be coded as something that would fall under my insurance provider, but I'm not sure ovulation testing would qualify :(  I do have a follow-up next week, and will ask that question.  I have used the ovulation predictor tests (the strips you can get in mass quantities for a low price) and have only gotten a couple positive results over the past few months.  I have a feeling I've been testing too early and giving up too soon, but I have purchased the Clearblue Digital Ovulation tests for next month, and I will follow the directions to a "t".

Thank you for the ovulation thought; my ovaries looked fine, but I'm sure that doesn't mean that there couldn't be a problem!  I will explore that further.

  • I meant, what kind of dr. did your surgery. :)
It's always good to get all of the appropriate testing done. AMH, FSH, general hormone testings. These all test for things like, are your eggs in good quality, do you ovulate, even if you have the ovulation tests, it may show a positive, but it's only detecting the LH surge. These are just some things to think about. You want to get any other things that "could be wrong" out of the way before you "waste" a bunch of time and money.
Most insurances will cover diagnostics for fertility, they just won't cover any kind of fertility treatments.

This isnt an answer to the question you asked, but I thought I'd mention that I had only one tube show dye, too. They explained that due to the cramping I had pretty severe that it was likely due to a spasm that no dye got in not damage or blockage.

    Best of luck!
