3rd Trimester

27 weeks pregnant and cervix is only 12 mm long.

Hi there! My husband and I our expecting our second little one Oct. 7 2013. I am high risk due to an Anti-thrombin III deficiency and have been on Lovenox since about 16 weeks. We have had a crazy past week to say the least. On Friday of last week my husband took my to the er with terrible period cramping. I was examined briefly, told I was not having contractions, and that the baby was doing great. They told me I had a bad UTI and the bladder spasms were causing my pain. Yesterday I had an appointment with MFM (my high risk OB) and they did a regular ultrasound then the tech decided to do a vaginal ultrasound bc my cramping still had not stopped. After this she left the room came back with the Doc and I was immediately admitted. My cervix is 12 MM long and they have given me 2 shots of steroids thus far on top of constant Magnesium (which was finally stopped tonight. I am so scarred bc I know that our baby girl needs to stay inside to fully grow and develop, and I don't really know how to feel. The doctor basically said that I can go into labor at anytime and there is nothing they can do to stop it bc giving me hormones would be to risky and putting a stitch in isn't even an option bc there really is nothing left. They want me on bed rest once they release me, but has anyone ever gone through this? How realistic is it for me to think I can go at least 2 more months? I don't want to feel like I am not doing my job as a mother to protect my unborn child and I feel like if she came this soon I would blame myself. If ANYONE has any experience with anything like this I would so appreciate some input... Thank you in advance.

  • I have not gone through this but just wanted to send T&Ps your way. I'd post this on the high risk board for sure if you already haven't.

And you are doing your job as a mother by getting taken care of and by being concerned about it.

  • Thank you! I posted to high risk too so hopefully I can get some feed back=)
  • I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm also 27 weeks (almost 28) and at my last check my cervix is 10mm. I had a PTL scare at 23 weeks (cervix was 18 and funneling) and was in the hospital for a couple of days and then released to strict bed rest. I was on a medication to stop contractions (Indocin, which I only took for a few days) and I'm still on progesterone supps until 36 wks; which I'd suggest you inquire about to your MFM.

I honestly never thought I'd make it this far, but I believe strict bed rest and the meds have made a tremendous difference. What's also to my advantage is I'm not dilated and my cervix is still high.

I would suggest taking it VERY easy, strict bed rest if at all possible. I don't have a child to look after, but I can understand how it may be difficult for your family. It's too late for a cerclage so limit the time you're on your feet to take pressure off the cervix. Lie on your side (preferably left side), drink a good amount of water and have your husband help with the house work. Find out from your doctor how they plan on monitoring you.

Bed rest is difficult, but I believe it's for the best and it helps. I've read wonderful stories of ladies who've had similar experiences as you and I that went on to deliver term babies. So it is possible.

I would also suggest posting this on the High Risk board. There are some amazing ladies there and you'll find great support.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you, I am planning on asking my doc tmrw about the progesterone but I don't know how they feel about it due to my clotting disorder and MTHFR (since im still in the hospital). I'm just beside myself because I continue to have contractions and I want to hopefully make it another month if possible. More than anything I just want to be at home with our son bc this is supposed to be special time for us before the baby comes. I'm just super emotional overall. Thank you for your input I appreciate it greatly!
  • Did you have any issues with your previous pregnancy? The bladder infection could very well be causing the contractions. If this is the case, you'll hopefully experience less once the antibiotics clear the infection, How many of them are you getting in an hour?

  • My coworker is due August 1st and is now 37 weeks along. She had a very similar experience at 24 weeks and was put on strict bed rest after 2 nights in the hospital (she also had steroid injections to assist in baby's lung development). She was put on a couple medications to prevent her from having more contractions and was taken off the medication at 34 weeks. She was released from bed rest at 36 weeks and is doing great! Her bed rest was VERY restricted. She was reclined for the entire time and had to be efficient with any time she spent not reclined (washing up or using the restroom). She is in the final weeks with a very healthy baby boy getting ready to arrive, so it seems that this situation can turn out well! I hope that you and your LO continue with this pregnancy for as long as LO will sit tight inside. T and P for you and yours!

  • I just wanted to say my T&P are with you! Stay strong!
My mom had a similar experience with me and my brother in both of her pregnancies. Back in the 80's, when she was pregnant with me, she was RH negative and I was RH positive. SHe also had a shortened cervix and was placed on bed rest for months. Her body was literally trying to expell me since about 5 months. I was born at 34 weeks, totally healthy. This also happened with my brother less then a year later (we are 11 months apart). He was also born at 34 weeks and totally healthy. Just listen to your doctor, listen to your body and let your friends, family and bumpies pray for you and your little one.

  • I had an emergency cerclage at 22.6 weeks when my cervix was measuring 7mm. I'm 29 weeks today with the help of bed rest. My first came at 25 weeks and is now a healthy almost 3 year old. My best advice is to just do whatever the doctors tell you. Bed rest really does help in these situations. As hard as it is, it's 100x easier than a baby in the NICU. Good luck! I hope you stay pregnant for many more weeks.

  • I'm sorry I don't have any experience with this but I wanted to send you some thoughts and prayers!

Sounds like the best thing is going to be lost of bed rest.

Will be thinking about you and your LO.
