special tips on burping??

DS and I are not good at burping and I know its been giving him gas. He ends up letting out some farts that sound like a lot of pressure is behind them and I can tell hes uncomfortable.

Any tips from moms who had trouble burping?

  • Emma can sometimes be hard to burp. I have her sit on my leg and pat her back. Sometimes just tipping her back to like a laying down position and sitting her back up. Then I start to pat again and I swear she'll burp. I don't know why that helps. It just works for her most of the time. Or switching her to up on my shoulder sometimes works.

  • I put her over my shoulder and pat her back. Sometimes it takes longer than others. I've also notices that if she just lays there for a few minutes & then I burp her, it's a little easier.?

    GL ?

  • I don't have much luck with over-the-shoulder burping, but I sit Kiran on my leg, put one hand on his belly, lean him forward a bit, and then lightly thump his back. ?

  • I have trouble, but over the shoulder while rubbing in an upward motion works the best.  Baby 411 gave the rubbing advice instead of patting...
  • I was really scared of hurting her at 1st if I patted too hard, but what worked for me was leaning forward & back (like getting in/out of a deep chair).  GL!
  • I either sit her on my lap or put her over my shoulder and pat her back.  Sometimes when she's really gassy, all that helps is laying her on her belly across my knees and patting/rubbing her back, which calms her down, but it doesn't make her burp.

DH walks, bounces and pats all at the same time, and she burps every time.  Never works for me though, it might be a Daddy thing.  But you could give it a shot if all else fails!

SAME thing happens in our household! DH always gets her to burp!

  • Changing positions helps us.  Just by putting him upright it will sometimes make him burp without any patting at all.

I do this too.  I think the pressure of the hand on the belly helps push the gas out

  • The rubbing upward trick worked great for me. My step-mom, who's a neonatal nurse, used to just sit him on her lap and slowly bend him forward then back.

For gas, I used to lay DS on his back, take his feet, roll his knees in toward his chest, then down, in a circle, a few times. Worked great for getting the farts out.
