2nd Trimester

I failed my glucose screening, now I have to do the 3hr test.

Feeling super upset right now. I've been pregnant 5 times and have never failed a test before. I went Monday for the 1 hour test and the dr called today and told me that my numbers were 152, they want to see it under 139.  So now next Wednesday I have to go for the 3 hour.

I called the dr last week to see what was safe to eat so I don't fail and the receptionist told me butter bread was good to eat. Soooo....I was starving and had 4 pieces lol.about 2 hrs prior to the test. Now that I think about it.. Bread is carbs and carbs turn into sugar. Could this have been why I failed?  Damn that woman for telling me it was ok to eat bread!!!!  I'm not happy about this at all and need some words of encouragement or a similar story to mine.

  • That is a strange thing to tell you to eat, but supposedly your body mostly metabolizes sugar within an hour, so for the most part, the only thing they are reading is the glucose drink you had 1 hour prior. Good luck, many women fail the one hour and go on to pass the 3 hour with no issues. Very common. I did end up with GD my second pregnancy and I was very upset and scared at first, but it ended up being no big deal and I had a healthy and very normal sized baby.

  • It's a screening test. Just because you failed it doesn't mean you'll fail the 3-hour, and even if you do fail the 3-hour, having GD is not the end of the world.

  • Huh.  I was told to fast before the test.  They scheduled it in the morning so that I could come without having eaten for the night.  Hopefully the 3 hour one will go better!

I have no idea why someone would tell you that.  The receptionist is clearly not knowledgeable about what they are testing and how the test works.  I wonder how many women have failed due to that bad advice.

Do NOT eat after midnight for the 3 hour test.   The three hour is a sucky test. I'll be honest.  But, you only have to do it once.

Just bring a cup of ice and a straw.  Get the drink REAL cold and CHUG CHUG CHUG.  That's the only way I can handle it.  Too sweet otherwise.

GD is really not the horror many people think it is.  I had it with my last pregnancy and it was no big deal.  Hell, if nothing else, I got about 10 ultrasounds over the course of my pregnancy.  :-)  Towards the end, they were weekly.  Relax, and just take the test.  Stress can decrease your body's insulin and raise blood sugar.  Also, certain medicines raise blood sugar.  Just be calm. All will be fine, regardless.

  • I agree that seems like a weird thing to su lggest eating. I just talked to the OB ast week about ways to avoid GD. She said you can't really avoid it, but really cutting down bread is the best recommendation for getting ahead if it or controlling it. Hopefully you'll pass the three hour just fine. I've had a few friends with GD and it was a pain, but worked out fine. Good luck, and bring a book!

  • Thank you ladies. I appreciate it :)
  • I failed the first test and passed the 3 hour. Hang in there...

  • Receptionists are not doctors, and they are not nurses. Bread, like all grain, will turn to sugar. Protein probably would have been a good choice. Honestly your numbers weren't that high, so just take the 3 hour test, and you'll probably be just fine.
