any type of information from people who have done fertilty injections before starting IUI

If anyone out there has had an IUI done and could give me some insight on how that process works that would be great. I was just denied going ahead with IVF (ugh insurance companies are obnoxious) So the stupid protocol is three iui's before we can get approval for IVF. Has anyone out there been able to get around going through all three IUI's before getting authorized for IVF? I'm so concerned that time is slipping away from us I'm 34 and I feel like them having delayed us moving straight to IVF we are wasting time with IUI. I was wondering has anyone out there had success with IUI??

You're not going to find success stories here. I would post on PAIF for that. However, IUI success stories seem to be pretty rare. The rate is only 15%.

Someone posted the other day about the insurance mandating IUIs first and how to get around that. I would search the past posts to see what was said (I didn't see the responses)

This board has mostly people using ivf as their IF treatment. Obviously, iui did not work for me see my sig below. We welcome you here but I'm just not sure how helpful we'll be since we have moved past the iui stage. Btw my insurance paid for none of my treatments and I am 34. I have been doing this for 4 years. Wish I hadn't wasted time with iui's.

We had success on our 4th cycle of IUI (2nd with injectables). I too had to go through three IUI's with injectable medication before insurance would give us coverage for IVF. Honestly I know it's frustrating but going through the IUI's your RE can learn so much about how your body responds to medication. By the time you go through IVF (if you need to) the RE will have so much information about your body which is important as they can make changes to your protocol to have success. If you have other medical reasons and the RE can prove that IUI will not be successful for you,there are ways to get around it. For me, I thought 3 try's of SOMETHING was better than 3 tries of nothing.

Many of the women here are completely OOP for all of their treatments so you have to remember we are very blessed to have some coverage. After being on the IF board and listening to people use up their life savings for these treatments and still not have a baby in their arms I was even more grateful. IMO, going through 3 IUI's to get to IVF was the least of my worries.

Hey there - I know you have been posting here for a little while now, so I remember when you posted your disappointment about not being approved by insurance. I'm so sorry. For whatever reason (luck? the right diagnosis?) my insurance approved my DH and I straight to IVF. Now, IUI would never have worked for us, because we are doing PGD for a genetic disorder, but I think we were approved solely based on my DX of endometriosis and my hubby's DX of low morphology. I can't remember your diagnosis, but if you want to share some more in your siggy, maybe you have enough of a case to push back and request a trip straight to IVF?

I was going to cite AngieOO's success on here - but definitely go post on the PAIF board to see if others have had success. There ARE successes with IUI, so if your DX is the right one for that, it might be your ticket! Good luck. It's so hard dealing with insurance, because they put artificial hurdles in your way, but hopefully one of these things will get you there eventually. And with little cost overall...

I am not sure why, but my insurance also approved us to go straight to IVF. I never questioned it.

OP, you're only 34. 3 IUIs will take you about 3-4 months to complete. From your siggy I can't see that you have DOR or anything that would warrant you absolutely needing to start IVF right this second. Have a little patience, it's worth it to have IVF covered, trust me. You can always go around insurance and just pay for it OOP I suppose Stick out tongue

Like another poster said, IUIs are also a good way for your RE to see how your body reacts to certain medications before going through the financial/emotional aspect of IVF.

I know some of the insurance companies we compared required a certain number of IUIs first OR a diagnosis that's not favorable for IUI. Maybe there is a clause like that on yours that your doctor can appeal?

Contact your insurance company for a copy of your their infertility policy which will spell out their exact cut off values for when you can go straight to IVF etc. Honestly if you do not meet the cut offs, I would not spend your energy on trying to get a waiver and be approved anyway as it will probably take longer than the three months it takes to do three IUIs and your chance of success with a waiver is slim to none.
