Baby Names

Vintage vs Traditional

What are your thoughts?

I think all traditional names are vintage, but not all vintage names are tradtional.

Using DD's name (Josephine) and one of my front runners (Elizabeth).

To me Josephine is vintage, but not really traditional.  It peaked in the 1910s/1920s, fell off the face of the earth for a while, and is trending up slowly now( it rose 20 something places last year.)

Elizabeth has been a name that has hovered near the top of the charts for 100+ years, so I would consider it both traditional and vintage.

What do you guys think?  What makes a name traditional to you?

Re: Vintage vs Traditional

  • To me when I hear 'vintage'  I think of an older established name that isn't so common.   A name like Elizabeth to me is definitely traditional but I don't really see it as vintage since its always been a pretty common name.  Josephine on the other hand I see as more of a vintage feel because its far less common

I know its not the question but I think Josephine and Elizabeth go great together!

This is pretty much how I feel about it. DD's full name is Elizabeth, which I consider traditional. But her nn is Betty which I consider vintage.

  • I totally get and agree with what you are saying.  I love "vintage" names.  I guess to me "vintage" is an "old lady/man" name, which are my favorites.

Traditional is definitely something that has been around a while and has been steadily used this whole time.

  • I agree. I think vintage and traditional are the same in that they both include names that have been around a long time, but how uncommon a name is puts it in the vintage category.

  • DS is Richard and I would call that Vintage because I hardly hear it these days.

A name like Elizabeth is more Traditional because it has remained popular over the years.

  • I would say traditional has remained popular over time whereas vintage would be a name that is now back in vogue after being considered a not so stylish choice for some time.

My thoughts exactly. My best example would be Scarlett. It's not traditional, like Elizabeth would be since Elizabeth has remained popular for several years, whereas Scarlett is an older name that has recently started to gain more popularity. So, to me, Elizabeth is traditional and vintage and Scarlett is vintage.

All of this.  To me "vintage" is a name that was popular several generations ago and then dropped off the charts (or far to the bottom) for a few decades and is either still uncommon or is making a comeback.  Josephine, Olivia, Sofia, Emma, Pearl, Iris, Doris, etc.

"Traditional" is a name that's been at/near the top of the charts for several generations and isn't going to drop any time soon.  Elizabeth, Catherine, Maria, Anne, etc.
