I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old about to start kinder. I've been offered an oppy to move up at work, but it comes with a trade off. I currently only work 4 days per week. I love having a weekday off for outings with the kids, errands, etc. If I take the new role, I get a $8K raise and a better title, but I'd have to be in the office 5 days. What would you do?

I would need a TON more information! Are you working 4 days FT right now or is it 4 8 hours days? Basically are you going to work more hours, or are you just spreading your current hours over 5 days? If there is an hour increase, does the increase in pay match up with the increase in hours?
I'm not one to look for more hours to work, but if my family needed the money, I would consider it. But again, it would depend on if it was cost effective to take the "raise" (if I'm spending my raise to pay for childcare, I wouldn't be as inclined to take it).
I'm only working 8 hour days currently; I'd be working more hours and harder while I'm at work. I'd be spending the same on childcare.
This exactly, is a promotion that if you don't take you will miss out on future ones? And does your family need the extra $8,000? I'm all about working my way upwards...so if it meant a jump in the path to higher position, I'd do it. But that is just me personally. I already work 40 hours/5 days a week so that is probably why I wouldn't even blink at it.

I like the way you think.
When you put it that way, it seems like a no brainer.
Based on what you are saying here that future opportunities would not be withheld, the trade off would not be worth it for me. As above poster pointed out, this is only about $150 per day before taxes. I don't know what your tax rate is, but I'm guessing you will probably only see about $100 or so. It would not be worth it to me to give up that time with my kids and the time to run errands, etc. And it sounds like another opportunity may come down the pipe when your kids are older.

Are you planning on working the 4 days indefinitely? I work 4 days now and am undecided if I will ever go back to 5.
If you love that day and don't see giving it up any time soon, then why bother?
If you are fairly certain you will eventually go back to 5 days a week anyways why not take the extra cash and a promotion and be able to get more cash and more promotions faster?
If it were me, I would not do it. Everyone's perceptions and values of money differ, and this is just my opinion, but $8k a year more for 20% more work hours almost seems like a slap in the face. To me, I would have thought that that would have just been the promotional pay increase, and then another adjustment of 20% more pay to account for the extra day worked.
Totally not worth it for me.

I can only tell you that I declined to aggressively pursue a promotion, deferring it to the next year. The next year they changed the promotion process and it has now been off the table for two years.
You cannot predict what will happen in the future. If you remain in your current role are you happy?

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

It wouldn't be worth it to me.
I feel very stalled right now work wise AND money wise (state university. No raises in 5 years). I work 5 days but one is from home, i get a LOT of time off, and I set my hours to miss rush hour.
I've looked for other jobs recently, but the idea of losing the time that I do get w/ DS just isn't worth it to me - at least right now. Maybe in a few years, but for now - being with him as much as I can is just too important.

this. Personally, $8,000 would not impact my life whatsoever and I would not do it. I would also LOVE to work a 4 day work week and would take much more than an $8000 pay cut to do so but it isn't possible in my job. Good luck!
tough
I wouldn't. $8000 to have to work another day a week and do more work is not worth it to me, especially if you don't need the money. If you hope to be promoted in the future, then I wonder if it might look bad if you didn't take it.
When did you last try to negotiate the WFH day? If it wasn't recent, I'd try again. I don't think I'd do it for 8K, but I would try to negotiate more $ before I turned it down.
Our situations are pretty identical; I even work for a university.
Thanks for all the advice!
