McDonald's for 1 year old

I was reading on SAHM, and one mom posted that she feeds her 1 year old fast food atleast once a week and then finished her statement by saying "I choose the healthiest options." So, fine do what you want with your own kid, but, seriously?? A 1 year old?? I'm absolutely baffled and I feel bad that the kid isn't getting the best start, mentally and physically, that they could.

There. I'm snarky and judgey. But here's my question, 1 how old were your kids when you first gave them fast food? And 2 how often do you give it to them?

nbsp;I think Isla had her first happy meal when she was a lot closer to two.nbsp; I could be wrong though, I really don't remember.nbsp; Personally, I never had the need to stop for her lunch while we were out.nbsp; When she was that young, we were on such a schedule that I planned most things around her meal times.nbsp; It wasn't an issue.nbsp; No idea what is driving this woman to make that choice, but I will say it's a crappy one and she may have an understandable reason.nbsp; Isla loves happy meals, but she probably only gets one every few months or something.

Her reason is that it's no fun to sit in the car or at the food court eating a packed lunch. Eyeroll.

  • I don't have a 1 year-old yet, but I would hope that I would not be feeding him fast food that often or even close to that often.  Also, I know that the food items marketed as the healthiest in many fast food restaurants are not actually the healthiest or even remotely healthy. It's still possible that the choices she's making aren't necessarily terrible.

Technically, I'm reserving judgment, but I would hope that this doesn't become a habit for her and her child.  It's a terrible habit that even as a somewhat intelligent adult I have a hard time breaking.

  • I don't remember when he had his first fast food, to be honest. Sometime last spring, so he was just over 1. We don't do it very often and until recently, I was more likely to get a burger for myself and then go home and make him a sandwich. It wasn't until he connected that food came from drive thru windows that I would order him something when I did. We usually get him chicken strips, apple slices, and milk. Not healthy by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not something that happens very often, so I don't worry about it.

Now, he randomly orders chicken nuggets and apple slices from just about every drive thru (car wash, coffee, dry cleaner, bank). It's kind of funny, he always starts with, "no, thank you" and then, "ummm....chicken nuggets!" It's really not funny, though, because then people assume he is living on chicken nuggets.

  • Meh. They both had Mc D's. maybe once a month?
The little one has just had his first time a week ago. Would I do this every week? No, personally I would not.
Do I see this as a terrible deal? Nope. I don't know her circumstance well enough to judge her food choices either.
I do know that both my kids go nuts for nuggets though and that when my big boy was sick and did not eat well, that was what I offered because he would actually eat them. After three days of barely any food, I was happy he ate something.

  • I think DD was around two. I think once a week is too much. We go thru phases of eating fast food twice a month and then not for months. We eat out a lot, one or two times per week but places like sushi or pizza or a family type restaurant.

Our boys have been to McDs (or as DS1 calls it: "Old McDonald's") a few times. I don't eat fast food so its not really an issue here, although I don't care if we are going for social reasons (ex. meeting friends there, going with grandparents etc.), I'd let them eat a Happy Meal. Truthfully, I think McD's once a week for anyone is excessive!
  • Meh. She said she gets her grilled chicken, apples, and milk. The best choice? No but once a week I probably wouldn't really bat my eyes at. We used to get pizza weekly and DS would eat some. It does get harder as they get older to get food from certain places without them asking for some. You don't know how many times Dunkin Donuts has run out of all the donuts and only has coffee for Mommies left.

I'm in the process of breaking up with McDonalds , and his stupid yummy cousin Hardee's .  I really don't want to pass that on to my girls, so we just don't go.  I think they've had it once in the last 2 months.  And when we do go, I don't get them happy meals , I get hamburgers or the 4 of us will split a 20 pc mcnugget, and a large fries.  It kind of scared me a little when we were driving past McD and DD1 wanted to stop for a happy meal.

when I was growing up, we went to McDonalds on Thursday, because that was payday.  That still kind of makes me smile.

  • I roll my eyes at anyone who feels sorry for anyone else's kids over something like this.

Are there better nutritional choices? Of course. Would I eat fast food that often? No.

But feeling sorry for her child? Really? People also complained about someone who packed a meal for their child to eat at a restaurant or food court so she couldn't do that without being judged either. And if I'm right about that poster, she lives way out in the middle of nowhere, so quick runs to the store and home won't happen, and you can eat at the park year round.

There are of course better choices. But to break out a "I feel sorry for her kid" is ridiculous and judgy.

  • McDonalds is flucking gross.  My kids won't even eat it.  Wendy's and Chicfila on the other hand?  They looooove.

I should flame myself for buying my children hate filled chicken but, meh

I know it makes the story better because you say that she is one, but the kid is almost two.  She feeds her the apples, grilled chicken, and sometimes scrambled eggs.  Sure not the healthiest place to eat, but not quite as awful as you imply.

  • I worry bc my friends sister feeds her 7 month old spaghettios. She told.me it helps.cut down on her use of formula bc its expensive. She also uses rice cereal bc it makes the bottle last longer.

With the whole mcdonalds thing, dd is.only 6 months old so shes not going to have it for a long time. When we eat out we really dont do fast food. Id give her a healthy option from my plate when shes ready for it

Haha I love that! And I totally get that as they get older, and more keen to what's going on that it gets tougher.
  • My kid has never had McDonalds. He has had Subway, pizza and fish and chips from our local food truck. We go out maybe once a month.

I don't care what anyone else feeds their kid.

Because you're such a saint? Because no one else on the bump has ever judged for anything? First off, it wasn't just giving a 1 year old fast food, it was also the frequency. Secondly, it has nothing to so with her being a SAHM, that's just where I read it from.

Dam, it must be exhausting waking up in such a bitchy mood.

You still posted on another board and broke out a "I feel sorry for her kid" over it.

Who cares? No one is arguing it's a great nutritional choice, but it is a choice, specifically her choice for her kid.

Yes it's judgey, but at that age you are creating some pretty unhealthy habits and expectations. The childhood obesity and diabetes rates in this country are awful. And the number 1 people responsible for it? Parents. So yes I'm an advocate for giving our children a strong start so that they have a lifestyle to hopefully allow them to make healthier decisions when they get older. It's our responsibility as parents, bottomline. It's not so much eating super healthy or not giving your kid nuggets, it's creating the habit of going to fast food and connecting having fast food to emotions like being happy or having fun. That's why people become hooked on it. So let me be clear in that it's not all about what food she is giving her child, it's more about the fast food mindset.
  • I don't care what anyone feeds their child unless it's incredibly stupid like pop and a whole hot dog for a 3 month old.

  • I am admittedly judgy but I can't get it up to judge over that. Sure, I think packing a lunch would be a better option. I think that some McDonald's assuming she isn't giving the nuggets on a weekly basis isn't a huge deal. Im sure there are people who take their kids to a restaurant on a weekly basis and let their kids choose a far less healthy option but since she said fast food there's a stigma there.

It's also hysterical that she can't win. If she chooses fast food for lunch, she's a bad mom for feeding her kid crap. If she packs a lunch and feeds it in the food court, she's cheap and lazy. The only option she's allowed to have is to put her kid in the car hungry for an hour and drive home. That is completely reasonable. ::eye roll::

at two a kid can't differentiate between a piece of grilled chicken at home vs a nice restaurant vs McDonald's. I think as long as she's not wolfing down a Big Mac with an extra large fry she's not doing any harm by choosing to get a piece of grilled chicken there vs at home or at a different restaurant.

She meets her playgroup there once a week in the winter months.  She lives in the middle of nowhere and options are not available. She also feeds her child a healthy diet the rest of the week.

Oh, I'm sorry...your just "absolutely baffled", and feel bad that the kid isn't getting the best start in life because his mother feeds him grilled chicken from McDonalds. And you feel so bad about it, you had to bring it to this board.

I can't believe I misinterpreted that as outrage! My bad.
  • She was somewhere between 1 and 2 when she had her first chicken nuggets from McD's. Honestly, she doesn't really like them, so if taking her out to eat, we are more likely to go to a deli where she can get a sandwich and fruit. She does love french fries, but she doesn't get them once a week. Not even close.

I think a treat once a week is ok, though. Every Sunday we have lunch at my IL's, and Nora gets to have a cookie or ice cream or some other desert. Is that better or worse than having a happy meal once a week?

I see no difference in the food you get at McDonalds and the food you get at Chilis. If you aren't cooking it at home, you really don't know what is going into the food. I get DDs biscuits from McDonalds. DD1 sometimes gets it with egg. I don't like the nuggets there, or any of the food other than the biscuits and fries, so I don't give them that food. I don't pay attention to the people in there, so I guess I don't really judge parents that take their kids there either.

I judge people who sue McDonalds for making thier kids fat, though.
