Does anyone else smoke? I'm assuming no, but I was just curious. I smoke 1-2 cigs at night after I put the kids to bed. I smoked before I got pregnant with my daughter and obviously quit when I found out I was pregnant. I was really good until last August when my dear uncle passed away and then for the week of the funeral, etc. I started smoking again. I know I should stop, but I actually look forward to it at the end of a long day. I'm ashamed

Anyone else smoke every now and then?

People always talk about the risk of lung cancer in people who smoke. What they don't talk about is the risk for head and neck cancers.
I work in clinical research for patients with head and neck cancers, things like mouth cancer, tongue cancer, throat cancer, etc. These people have their jaw bones removed, tongues removed and reconstructed. And in some cases, their entire larynx is removed. They won't ever breath without a tracheostomy again and a lot of them will never eat food by mouth again.
Some of these people only smoke a "few" cigarettes a day. I highly suggest you revisit your coping mechanisms and come up with a better way to unwind.
Edited for punctuation. And spelling, apparently.

I don't smoke, but sometimes when I get drunk and I see someone smoking a cigarette, I will bum one and smoke it. Just because there's something that makes me want a cigarette when I'm drinking (which is not very often).
Occasionally, DH and I will share a cigar when we are on vacation (which is also not very often). Sometimes we will go to a hookah lounge with friends which is also fun.
It just isn't a big part of our lives, we wouldn't miss it if we were told we had to give it up forever---which we intend to do once we are KU. Maybe just the cigar for DH.
Good luck! I think you should quit!

All ALers welcome!
When I was in college I picked up the habit, but it was only a couple a day unless I went out drinking and then it was a little more. I totally get how it is a stress reliever and I get there are certain times that are especially hard to not have one like after meals, with drinks etc. I will tell you, after quitting, I felt so much better all around.
It might have been a little easier for me because it was 2-3 a day, but it is possible to stop and it is so worth it.

I wasn't going to respond, but I am so glad panther posted the above.
I lost my grandfather two weeks ago to throat cancer as a direct result of his smoking. My great aunt also passed away from throat cancer in January. She was a smoker as well.
My best friend, the woman who literally fed me and gave me a place to live for over a year, almost died two years ago from throat cancer and she had only ever smoked for a few months when we were freshmen in college. She is only 26 years old and she will have to take medications and deal with various consequences from the radiation treatments for the rest of her life. All because of a stupid decision she made when she was 19. And she is one of the lucky ones.
DH's grandfather is still going through treatment for throat cancer and we considered it a miracle when his feeding tube was able to be removed. He has had this type of cancer twice now due to smoking.
There are ways to unwind at the end of the day which do not risk your life and cause pain and suffering to your family members. You might be one of the lucky ones, but why would you ever take that risk?

My grandma had lung cancer - one lung removed and then died when the other lung gave out on her. I was 5 or 6, so the horrible things smoking can do to you was ingrained in me at an early age.
DH was a smoker and quit when we started dating. He still does it occasionally. He went out with co-workers for a drink last night after work. The last time, I knew he smoked a few cigarettes; this time, I sent him a horribly guilt-ridden text message. "Liam says, 'I love you, daddy, and I love your lungs. You wouldn't want me to smoke, and I don't want you to smoke,'" or something along those lines. I'm a horribly naggy wife when it comes to that, I totally admit it.

"I had SUCH a long day! I'm so stressed I just polished off an entire bottle of wine! I think I'm going to have 5 margaritas after this and tomorrow drink a 12 pack of beer! Smoking is HORRIBLE but drowning my liver in alcohol is perfect FINE!!!"
The hypocrisy on this board is effing ridiculous.
::hands GM a post it with my name on it::
I have slowed it down to one cig after work and when I drink, which isn't often.
I plan to quit completely soon.

If someone came in here saying they drank an entire bottle of wine a day or that they use alcohol as a coping mechanism, my advice would be the same.
This conversation is not about alcohol consumption though.

I understand that, completely.
People say they drink a few drinks a night, and people ask what they're drinking and compare drinks.. OP said she smokes a couple cigs at night and everyone jumps to how bad they are for you.
I know the cigs are absolutely horrible for your health and they can do pretty sh!tty things to your entire body. But so can drinking.
Idk, it just rubbed me the wrong way. It's been a long week. ::sigh::
I smoked as a teenager and quit cold turkey when I was 23. Nowadays, the smell of cigarettes disgust me more than a lot of other bad smells.
I honestly couldn't smell it/ didn't mind it when I smoked. Now I can smell it from a crazy distance & I hate it.
Im pretty sure that the OP wasn't looking to be educated on the risks of smoking or a lecture - she really just asked if anyone else smoked.
I'm pretty sure that morons who ask about others taking unmonitored Clomid still get the same risks and lecture replies. It's what we do.

Well obviously - it is a free country after all.
Kind of goes the same for my comment as well. As someone who used to smoke, I can just understand that when you are already saying you are ashamed of something, its incredibly annoying to get a bunch of condescending "smoking is gross and bad for your health" comments. I mean - its obvious.
But if everyone wants to preach on, preach on.
No one even suggested booze. I unwind without it just fine...yoga, walking the dogs, watching a movie, baking, reading, etc. I just tell MH that I need 30 minutes alone and take a bath and he doesn't bother me.
Believe it or not, there are people who do not know the extent of the issues smoking can cause. May think it is just lung cancer and emphysema. There are also plenty of folks who think it won't happen to you if you quit when you are young and/or are not a heavy smoker.
If someone is asking whether or not others smoke I think it is perfectly reasonable and not preaching for the responders to say WHY they choose not to do so.

BUMP BREAKS FOR EVERYONE!!!1!1!1!1!1!
I never said anyone suggested booze? Reading fail on your part because I was saying how everyone was so quick to jump on how bad smoking is, yet drinking alcohol is mentioned on a daily basis and not one time does someone say, "drinking is bad for you"....understand now?
Wow. I posted this and then went to Costco. I didn't realize this would be such a not button issue! Thank you all for your responses. I really don't mind the lectures about my health. Of course, I do know it all already, but I don't think it's a bad idea to be reminded of the risks. I love smoking, but I hate it that I love it, you know? I really do look forward to it and as for all of the suggestions about replacing it with a shower, yoga, etc. I have absolutely no desire to even stand up in a shower at the end of the day lol. Honestly, I plan on giving it up once I get pregnant again. I know that sounds horrible, but I think that's just the way it's going to play out. If I don't get pregnant in the next cycle or two, then I will form a plan to quit.

All are welcome
I no longer smoke but do get the urge every now and then.
I have tried those electronic cigs since I hated the smell of cig smoke.
And there is some evidence to suggest that there are health benefits to occasional light drinking (i.e. red wine and heart health). Name one health benefit of smoking a cigarette.
I have no energy for this today.
Didn't say "one drink a day" can cause health issues. My reference included heavy drinking.
Never said one cig a day couldn't cause health issues.
Drinking doesn't only affect the liver, just like cigs don't only affect the lungs.
She's talking about me. Nothing wrong with some hardcore beer and wine chugging every now and then. Actually I usually just inject it into my veins directly, saves me some time.
So where is the post where someone asked about their alcoholic tendencies that had the potential to be toxic to them...and the hypocritical responses that cheer her on? Because that's what it seems you are claiming is happening here.
Yep, there is a stigma about smoking. And there should be. My whole family smokes and I hate it. I've lost grandparents to both smoking and drinking. A grandfather had throat cancer from moderate use. A grandmother had to work really damn hard to drink enough to damage herself enough to lead to death.
Sully, what is going on? I remember a time that you were happy and funny. You alright over there?
Drunk.
I was a pack-a-day smoker for about 12 years and have been completely smoke free since Nov 2011 (I used quitting cigs to be the "paper" gift to my husband on our 1st anniversary).
Sometimes I wish I could have just one, but I know if I do, I'll just become a full-fledged smoker again.
Married: Halloween 2010

I am not a smoker, but my husband smokes 1 cigarette a day. He has Chron's disease, and started noticing that on the days that he had had a cig (socially) he had firmer stool, and less blood. We did a bunch of research and talking to other people with Chrons/colitis, and it is a pretty consistent finding.
Obviously it is risky for him to continue to smoke that cigarette, but it truely does help him keep things a little more under control.
