So where is the post where someone asked about their alcoholic tendencies that had the potential to be toxic to them...and the hypocritical responses that cheer her on? Because that's what it seems you are claiming is happening here.

Nope. Not claiming that at all.

Sh!t's getting blown out of proportion like it usually does.

"No OP. You shouldn't smoke. It's bad bad BAD! You will get cancer and you WILL die!! You better find a better way to relieve your stress!!!!!" ::later this evening:: "I had SUCH a long day! I'm so stressed I just polished off an entire bottle of wine! I think I'm going to have 5 margaritas after this and tomorrow drink a 12 pack of beer! Smoking is HORRIBLE but drowning my liver in alcohol is perfect FINE!!!" The hypocrisy on this board is effing ridiculous.

No one even suggested booze. I unwind without it just fine...yoga, walking the dogs, watching a movie, baking, reading, etc. I just tell MH that I need 30 minutes alone and take a bath and he doesn't bother me.

I never said anyone suggested booze? Reading fail on your part because I was saying how everyone was so quick to jump on how bad smoking is, yet drinking alcohol is mentioned on a daily basis and not one time does someone say, "drinking is bad for you"....understand now?

One drink a day is unlikely to cause long term health issues.

    One cigarette a day can.

Also your liver can regenerate, your lungs cannot.

And there is some evidence to suggest that there are health benefits to occasional light drinking (i.e. red wine and heart health). Name one health benefit of smoking a cigarette.

I am not a smoker, but my husband smokes 1 cigarette a day. He has Chron's disease, and started noticing that on the days that he had had a cig (socially) he had firmer stool, and less blood. We did a bunch of research and talking to other people with Chrons/colitis, and it is a pretty consistent finding.

Obviously it is risky for him to continue to smoke that cigarette, but it truely does help him keep things a little more under control.

Interesting. Is it the smoking or the tobacco? Because there are better-ish options than cigarettes if it is the tobacco.

Hmm...never thought about that? We were told by a couple of different Dr.s that cigarettes do indeed help patients get into remission faster. My H was having about 20 BMs a day, and once he started smoking daily he is down to 5 or 6 a day, with no blood. No clue if it's the tobacco or the actual cigarettes. It would be interesting to experiment and see.

Sully, what is going on? I remember a time that you were happy and funny. You alright over there?

Nothing's going on. I'm being misunderstood. I'm good, just gonna stay away from convos about smoking or drinking for a while.

She's talking about me. Nothing wrong with some hardcore beer and wine chugging every now and then. Actually I usually just inject it into my veins directly, saves me some time.
Good job assuming. I wasn't talking about you, or anyone specific, actually.

It was a joke.  I was just trying to make light of the convo...clearly I failed.

This. My grandfather just passed away in March after smoking most of his life. Good luck quitting, OP!

  • imageNariaDreaming:
OP my husband tried unsuccessfully to quit for 5 years. He finally got on Chantix and has been smoke free for 5 months, the longest he had ever gone!

My DH is also a smoker. He smokes 2-3 times a day. The odd thing for him is that he's not particularly addicted to the nicotine, he's addicted to the soothing habit, like a toddler who can't give up their pacifier. He's working really hard to quit, but it's hard because he works a high-stress job and almost everyone he works with smokes. But we have an agreement that he will quit in the next five month, or go cold turkey the moment we find out I'm pregnant.

Is he open to trying a pipe or getting some loose and rolling his own? That would cut back on some of the crap that's added to it.

Ooo. Or a hookah. Not super portable, but a nice option.

I'm sure he'd be open to it, we just never really thought to try anything different. He loves hookah, he would flip his sh!t if I told him we could get a hooka pipe.

That's interesting. My grandmother has severe colitis, so bad that she has a hard time leaving her home before 2pm when her stomach feels better. She has said smoking 1 cigarette a day makes her stomach feel better. I have never done any research, but always just assumed she was making an excuse for her smoking habit.

Nope. Not an excuse. Well, maybe it is, but it really does help my H, and a quick google search has many other colitis patients reporting the same.

Sorry your grandmother is having such a hard time with her colitis, it's such a horrible disease.

OP, I just wanted to wish you the best with quitting.

I was a smoker, quit, started again, quit, started again, etc.  I quit when I started TTC DS, but I recently started smoking again.  My family is going through some epic stress at the moment and I reverted back to an old coping mechanism.  I've got a plan to quit on Friday.

Thank you.  Good luck.  It really is so hard to quit and not go back.  It's a pretty powerful addiction.

  • I smoked up until I found out I was pregnant both times. After my second child I have managed to stay a non smoker. I had tried quitting so many times in the past & was unsuccessful but for some reason it was very easy to stop when I found out I was pregnant.

    Good luck!
