engorged but no milk when pumping

Baby is 5wks old and I'm strictly pumping right now did to some medication I'm on so I have to pump and dump. But this morning I woke up feeling engorged but when I pumped I barely got an oz total. My breasts still feel full kinda painful and itchy... why??  Could I be losing my supply? How do you know when you start losing your supply and there's no getting a  it back???

Re: engorged but no milk when pumping

  • Maybe a clogged duct. Not sure but I would call a lactation consultant if it doesn't improve by the next pumping session otherwise you are in danger of "drying up".

  • When this happens to me I find better luck with the hand pump. You could also try hand expressing.

A good thing that helped me was rubbing the sides of my breast near my armpit. Usually it meant I had a clogged duct and I could feel it was clogged. Rubbing it out helped me get the flow started.

It sounds like you aren't getting a good letdown for the pump. This happens to me sometimes if I'm too engorged...hand expressing or warm compresses can help, as can looking at pics/video of baby and just pumping longer for me I usually do finally get a letdown after 1015min.

All of this. Also try breast compressions while pumping to help get the milk flowing.

  • Are you sure you need to pump and dump? have you called the Infant Risk line?
