Handling life as a new mom

I wrote a post shortly after my LO was born about my unique birth story. I have dealt with a lot lately, as we all have. My mother passed away a few hours after my little girl was born, I'm a FTM, sleep deprived, worn out and don't have any energy to get this post pregnancy weight off. I have spent my maternity leave just enjoying my baby girl, holding her, cuddling her and playing with her. I know this is what I should be doing during my leave but what are y'all doing to get more energy? any special secrets? How are y'all adjusting to new mommy hood?

  • I've been exercising and it gives me energy. As does coffee haha! However, if I were in your shoes, if I was taking good care of my baby, I would call that an accomplishment. You are handling the loss of your mother courageously and loving on your baby girl is the best thing for your spirit and honors your mother's love. You have forever to get off that silly baby weight. But maybe get an extra shot in that Starbucks and get out for a walk? A little movement goes a long way. GL sweet mama!

  • I've found that on the days I get out of the house before noon or so...go to the store, run an errand, whatever...I have so much more energy the rest of the day. A peaceful walk outside always helps too.

I agree with getting out in the mornings. The days that I don't get out, I don't have as much energy but those also tend to be the days that I really need to slow down and rest. I haven't lost any more weight other than the initial loss the first two weeks. Now that I'm getting ready to go back to work and just go out more in general, it's starting to get me down. Nothing looks good or makes me feel good right now and I know at 2 months post surgery I shouldn't necessarily be looking like a million bucks. I finally bought a pair of jeans and just use my bella band until I can get my stomach back. I feel good in my jeans so this has helped out a ton.

It's hard and I can't imagine how you're holding it together without your mom. It will get better!

  • I agree, I just need to focus on me an the baby during this time and stop beating myself up that I haven't lost the baby weight yet.
  • My heart goes out to you! My mom is cancer pateint and we thought we were going to lose her right before I found out I was pregnant, praise God we didn't!

So far I have found getting up at 730 800 with his feeding, is when I have the most energy all day.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss! I agree with other posts that you're doing a great job just snuggling with your LO!

I think getting out of the house is always a great burst of energy, but I've also found that opening windows (or even just opening the blinds to let lots of light in) and playing some music gives me energy to get the laundry done or clean while DS is sleeping!

Best of luck to you - you're doing a great job with your little girl, keep it up momma!

  • Coffee!! Also, showering and putting on real (non sweatpants) clothes helps a lot, as does throwing on some make-up. Also, even just stepping outside to take a deep breath and stretch does wonders when I am feeling a bit run down.
