Aversion to prenatal vitamins

Hello ladies,

I am new here, have been reading the posts for a few weeks... thanks for all the helpful tips and entertainment :)  You're a funny bunch.

I am just about 8 weeks along and have been feeling super queasy at just the thought of taking my prenatal vitamins.  I was taking 2 Nordic Naturals DHA pills (500mg) plus either 2 flinstones chewables or 1 Concept OB pill.  But the past week I have been skipping days because I just can't swallow the pills without gagging and feeling awful.

My first OB appointment isn't until next Monday.  I'm worried about not taking the vitamins, but what is the point if they come right back up?

Any tips on how to deal with this issue?  Thank you!

  • Have you tried the gummy ones?

  • I take gummy ones, they taste like candy. I can't do regular vitamins without throwing them up.
  • I agree with PP, get the gummy prenatals.  They have everything that your pill types have, and they are easier to take.  You can also take them right before bed.

  • I thought the gummies didn't have as much iron? I take mine in the middle of a meal so my stomach is full and I don't have any after taste. I usually take it with dinner.

  • Ditto on the gummy ones. Also I've found that the Target brand ones don't give me nausea either for some reason.

They don't, but not everybody needs a ton of iron. My RE and OB are completely fine with the gummies.

OP, I take the Target brand.

  • Target gummies are your best bet. They don't have any iron, so just be aware of that and be sure your OB's on board, but mine said the folic acid and some of the B vitamins were more important to her and she'd rather me take the gummy and keep it down than throw up or avoid the pill prenatal. Like a few others have said, Flinstones chewables are good too if you want to try that to keep the iron, but it's at a more manageable level. Just check to be sure the folic acid is sufficient, I think it is , but I can't remember.

If you eat a balanced diet, you'd get away with just taking a B complex vitamin and possibly just eating more iron containing foods.  I've been taking at least 2 B complex vitamins daily (to get lots of folic acid) and have been eating hummus like it is going out of style (good iron source).

  • I take mine on a full stomach after dinner - it helps (they've always made me queasy in the morning, even before I was pregnant).

Look for foods that are high in folate, like spinach, black beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc. Good luck - sorry you're feeling yuck!

I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

  • I take the gummy ones just CVS brand right before bed. I actually look forward to them everyday bc I feel like I'm getting a sweet treat. With my first pregnancy I had such an issue keeping my prenatal down I wish I would have known about the gummy sooner!!
  • Ask your doc to put you just on folic acid
  • Ask your doc to put you just on folic acid That's what mine did because I was getting so sick off them. He said that in the first 4 months folic acid is really the only thing you need if your diet is well balanced. I'm still nauseous but it's 95 percent better . Call the office and see if they will call in the prescription
