Talk to me about doulas

DH and I orginally agreed that we don't think we need a doula.  DH is worried it's going to steal away his role as supportive husband.  I don't really want an audience nor do I really want to spend the money.  But one of the midwives I see, keeps bringing it up and it was mentioned again in our Bradley class.  Now we are starting to doubt our decision.

What made you decide for or against having a doula?  For what it's worth, we are planning on having a med-free birth in a hospital with a midwife.

Re: Talk to me about doulas

  • I haven't decided on this yet, but I have the option of using a doula for free (there are two locally completing their certification so they need a certain number of births under their belt).  For me, I don't feel like I need a doula during delivery.

The cost for us was the main thing preventing us from getting a doula, but I think we could have managed if I'd really, really wanted one. But the other thing is that I may or may not be having a medically indicated c-section, and if not, then I'm perfect
  • I can see were you guys would be against doulas. Plus having a midwife is the midway between a doula and a reg. ob doctor. So you have a better relationship built there with your midwife. I can only state the main reasons for us getting a doula, but re

  • I decided on a doula, but I also decided on kicking my DH out of labor until it was time to push. He doesn't handle stressful situations well.
I have never heard anyone say they wished they didn't have a doula.  Their job is to run interference be

  • Thanks, ladies.  I think we may interview a couple just to be sure.

I have a very hands off approach to medical care.  In the heat of the momement, I'm worried my wait and see approach during labor could freak DH out and potent

  • I was interested in having one but it was hubby who really wanted one.  He just was not sure of how he would handle labor.  I also want this to be an enjoyable experience for him too.
