Making your own purees

If you make your own purees, what have you made? with DS1 I did a combination of homemade purees and jarred purees, and introduced finger foods a little early.  I have mastered simple purees: Butternut squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, bananas, peaches, and pears.  Has anyone tried anything else? Or given a go at making some combinations? I would love Colby to have a wide variety of foods that he eats early on, but some of the combinations of the baby food jars I don't think I would ever be able to make at home.

How are you all doing with making your own purees?

  • Yes, if you're being extra-cautious.  My doc had no problem with strawberries, even though a lot of "avoid" lists include them.  I gave them a couple times.

For those that freeze avocado do you just mash it and freeze like that? I find we never end up using all the avocado because it browns and turns gross

  • I haven't combined anything yet, but I'm planning to soon.  So far I've made: butternut squash, sweet potato, green beans, peas, avocado, pear, peaches, plums and mangos.  He's also had finger foods: toast with a little jelly, banana muffin,

  • I've made the ones you mentioned, as well as green beans, peas, spinach. Bananas and avocado, I just mash up with a fork. With DS, pretty much anything we ate, I gave to him. Once he had eaten multiple foods separately, I started combining them.

  • I had a lot of fun mixing stuff for DS when he was little. I haven't made any purees for DD.

Pear sauce with blueberries and cinnamon. Rice, peas, and garlic. Lentils with sweet potatoes and carrots.
