Breastfeeding

Is this too much?

I was away from DS for a whole feeding for the first time yesterday, so I pumped 3 hours from the start of when I last fed him. I stopped pumping once both 5 ounce bottles were filled to the top, which was about 10 minutes. This seems like a lot to me, and more milk was coming, but I didn't have anything to put it in. It was the middle of the afternoon, and my water and food intake was very normal. Is that normal? Is it too much?

Re: Is this too much?

  • That is how much I normally get in my first pumping session of the day.  In later pumpling sessions I get much less, like 5-7 ounces.

  • Do you typically nurse your LO on both sides every feeding? 10 oz seems like a lot.

  • Yes, we nurse both sides for 1020 minutes a side each time i nurse. DS is gaining just fine, more than an ounce a day, he's eight weeks today. His diapers are at a normal wet and dirty level, no diarrhea, I was concerned about the amount. If I pump an hou

  • 4 oz after an 1.5 hours is A LOT.  You have an oversupply.  Typical is 1 oz per hour, so after 1.5 hours the normal is 1.5 oz (ranging from 1-2).  You are getting about 3 times the normal amount.  I get 4 oz when I replace a feeding

  • Thanks for your advice. Oversupply was what I was afraid of.
