So I was at the cardiologist today for my third ultrasound on my heart. The first time was at one location with a male tech, who made and odd comment. (kep in mind I had nothing on under the gown from the waist up) As he was finishing he said something about how I could remove the gown and change into my shirt and he recommended I wait to do so until he left the room but I was a woman so I could do whatever I wanted...
Needless to say I was pretty confused and shocked, but thought it might have come out wrong or that i misunderstood. The next time, luckily, I had a female tech at the hospital, who did the exact same thing, but in half the time. Well today I went back to the original office and was slightly disappointed that I had the same male tech as the first time. I paid close attention to everything he said and did. He talked about his wife and kids yada yada yada. He didnt remember me from the first time. Well again, as he finished helped me sit up and said "you can take the gown off and change back into your shirt. I recommend waiting until I leave the room to do so, but you're a woman so that means you can do whatever you want."
.... WTF?! was he referring to the fact that i could undress in front of him? this was the second time he had fed me the same line. I'm confused because I truly dont think someone would say something like that and mean it the way i took it, both times. The first time I gave him the benefit of the doubt, thinking i misunderstood him, but this time it was very clear. Would he really compromise his job by saying something like that?
So is there some other way that any of you would have taken this comment to mean something else? It was uncomfortable and I'm still not sure if I want to call the medical board and report him, but I feel like it was out of line, not once but twice.
WWYD?
Re: should I report to the medical board?
He sounds like a smart a$$ with a stupid sense of humor. I think he was implying that women do not follow directions and do what they want.
Report to medical board, no.
Report to his supervisor that his comments were inappropriate and made you uncomfortable, yes.
i'm confused. he told you, you can change either before he leaves or after.
was it him saying you're a woman so you can decide for yourself that bugged you? i'm honestly lost...
I don't believe that techs, medical assistants, etc are reported to the medical board. As a doctor, I have a license number, which is how the board recognizes me; maybe techs have their own board, but there's no place on the state's medical board for them, and I don't think they have a license number.
I think he was making a bad attempt at a joke; honestly, I'd just let it go, or at most call his supervisor and request not to have him as my u/s tech again.
THIS!!!!!! chill
I don't know what he means by it, but I do think someone should say something to him to get him to stop making awkward jokes/suggestions while women are standing barely clothed in front of him and probably feeling vulnerable.
This. He may have other complaints against him for "subtle" comments and the only person who knows may be the supervisor... they will take care of it.
