Daycare "parent-teacher conference"?

Our DD is almost 20 months old and in the toddler room at daycare.

I'm curious if there are typically parent-teacher conferences for toddlers at daycare?

I don't really have any concerns and I can certainly ask our daycare, but just curious if others have had "formal" meetings with daycare teachers.

  • When we signed up, they told us we would have them monthly.....over 2 years later, we have yet to actually have one.  They seem to do developmental assessments a few times a year and send home the results, but we haven't had one of those in a long time either.

Normally, if the teachers have something to share, they'll just mention it during pick-up or drop-off, or give us a call during nap time.  We do the same if we have questions/concerns.

  • We didn't have one at our center, which went to age 2. At 2, he moved to the 2-3yo room at a Montessori, and they have them there.

Our daycare has them starting in the 2-yr-old room at the beginning and end of each "school" year. Our first was in September-ish and we just got a notice that they'll have them again next month. DS's teacher did a development test at the begining of the year. They do it again at the end of the year to measure how your child has progressed. I asked a few questions at the last one mostly about potty training, DS's social interaction, and if there were any behavioral issues. Our daycare has another teacher take the kids during the conference, so it is a nice opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with the teacher away from the craziness of pickup/drop off.

  • Yes, we are encouraged to have them twice a year.  It is a good opportunity to have a one-on-one with the teacher to talk about your child's development, what you're seeing at home vs. what they see there, etc.  It can be helpful to get their perspective on various things and work together on big milestones like potty training, for instance.  We don't generally have much time at drop off and pick up so it is nice to set aside some time to talk to the teachers.

  • Our school does them...even for the infant room. It's a chance to talk to your teacher, and see where your child is at, how you can help them at home, any concerns or accolades...on everyone's part.

  • Yep. Our center is supposed to hold them every 6 months, but we've only had one since we started (she was about 18 months at the time).

They do them more frequently as the kids get older (K readiness and such) as our daycare also includes a pre-school.

  • No, but I kind of wish they did.  He has anywhere from 4-6 teachers in his room in a given day, and sometimes I wish there was an all-around sit down to discuss how he's doing, behaviors and schedules at home vs. daycare, what they are doing in the classroom, etc.

  • We do.  DD's "parent-teacher conference" was pretty ridiculous for a 6-month old baby, but I appreciate it.  The teachers write up an assessment of where the child is developmentally, they note any concerns, and they have a specific time set up so the parents and teachers get good 1:1 time for a conversation.

As I said, it was silly-I speak with DD's teacher every day about how things are going, and often have a chance for longer conversations.  But I did like the idea of having a dedicated, uninterrupted conversation and opportunity to bring up questions and concerns.

  • Yes, we do them every six months. I found even the infant ones helpful, but they did get more helpful as DD got older.

  • I've only had 1 so far, maybe around 14 months or so?  The whole school was doing them, maybe its a twice-per-year thing.  I could request a meeting with her teacher at any time if I wanted a formal evaluation, but the quick updates when I'm picking her up or dropping her off have been enough for now.

  • Our DC offers optional parent-teacher conferences twice a year.  I recently went to them for both children.  DS was almost 1yr at the time.  I spoke to his teacher about what we need to work on for him to move up to toddlers- giving up bottles, 1nap/day, eating more finger foods.  DD is 2.5, her teacher gave me a big insight into what they are learning- matching colors and shapes, large motor like throwing a ball, small motor like zipping a coat, counting up to 20, potty-training, etc.  I was actually surprised how much info I got out of the meeting.  She also made me realize things that DD is working on that I hadn't thought of like following 3 step directions (ex. push your chair in, throw your trash out, then come back here).  If you have the option for a parent-teacher conference, I'd recommend it.

  • Our does... even in the 6week-6month room. I have always opted out of it
  • They sure do and we go.  It's good time to talk one on one even though I take plenty of time picking up and dropping off.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • Every 6 mo there is a parent-teacher conference to go over developmental skills to make sure the kids are school ready. It seems silly to do this in the infant phase but they do happen.

Mine has them twice a year regardless of age. There's a sign up sheet, where you pick your time slot. Some parents don't bother. I've always done them. It's a nice chance to catch up with the teachers, see what LO is up to, talk about what's coming next, etc.

    This!

  • In our old DC, i don't know- we were only there until the 2 to 2 1/2 yr old room and they didn't have them there. New daycare we did have them starting in the 2 1/2-3 yr old room and they do them every six months. At our school they do a really extensive evaluation of every kid, the teachers share the assessment responsibilities and it is no lie like a 6 page document.

This.  We have them yearly in the Spring (actually having it next week).  In the Fall they have an "Open House" where you can more informally have a meeting with the teacher.  I found it fun when he was 9 months old because it was 15 minutes of one-on-one call with the teach to tell us about our son.  Sure we can ask anytime but I found it nice.  When he gets older it will be more useful I'm sure.
