CP: What is your level of Education?

Re: CP: What is your level of Education?

  • My mom cosigned on student loans with me, and when I was a junior she declared bankruptcy. It showed up on my credit report and I was no longer able to get student loans. I was not able to afford tuition myself so I dropped out.

  • I have my Bachelors Degree in Applied Sciences with a concentration in Interior Merchandising and a minor in Marketing. I would like to go back and get my Bachelors in Marketing since I'm only a few classes away from obtaining it, then get my Masters in marketing. But since I'm a SAHM, it's a little pointless since I wouldn't be putting it to use. I'd just like to say I have those degrees. Lol.

  • I'm only a few credits away from finishing my Bachelors.  I originally started right after high school thinking I wanted to do theater.  I was doing a BA with a focus in theater studies and stage management.  My junior year I changed my mind, withdrew from school, moved back to my hometown, and have been taking classes on and off as I can afford them for well...almost a decade.  I had a lot of credits to make up because theater courses do not meet just about any other degree requirements.  I have about a semester's worth of credits left to graduate.  It will still be a BA, but in Liberal Arts with a focus in English Lit.  Don't ask me how that lines up with my consultant work in Healthcare technology, business and project management, and analyst work.  I am getting my degree in what I love, which just doesn't happen to be what I do...

  • I have a BA in Media and Preforming Arts. Aka theatre... From an art college. I can not do much with it. I love my college and still create art. But yeah a pretty much pointless degree...

If I had relieved a degree from a normal college it would have been in psychology. Sometimes I wish I had. Oh well.

No offense to lawyers, but I never consider a JD to be a doctor.  Not like I think law school is a walk in the park (I think it sounds miserable and I would never do it myself).  This may because, IME, I've never heard a JD addressed as a Dr., where a MD or a PhD would be, KWIM?

I have my MS.  Apparently, it's a pretty popular degree on this board.

No offense taken because I TOTALLY agree with you, and that was sort of what I was saying!!  I always just think it's funny because the degree is technically called a doctorate of law.

Lawyers have doctoral degrees because that is the terminal degree to be a lawyer. Also, law school professors are all called "Dr. X," even though they "just" have a JD. It is considered a professional doctorate, like a vet or an MD, not an academic doctorate, like a PhD.

  • I have a B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Art) with a concentration in Graphic Design. I worked in advertising/graphic design for several years and found out I hated it. Bopped around just doing clerical work for a while, and then went back to grad school and got my MLIS (Master in Library and Information Science). I am currently a Collection Management and Cataloging Librarian for a large public library system.

(That basically means that I don't work out on the floor answering questions or doing programs, I choose material for the collection and make sure it is properly cataloged so that people can find it.)

  • I'm two classes and dissertation short of my PhD in Romance Languages. However, the university requires that you teach two classes a semester (one day, one night) during your dissertation year, and I work full-time so I couldn't fulfill that obligation and had to withdraw. I couldn't afford to quit working and pay for school.

So my level of education is: BA in English Literature, BA in French Language/Culture, MA in Romance Languages (French and Linguistics specialties) plus 2 years of now useless coursework. I voted for Masters Degree!

  • SS here. I am ABD on a PhD.  All my research was destroyed when we were robbed, including back up disks, audio tapes of interviews and notes.  Most likely I will never finish it - the goal was to finish the field research before my first child was born, and I was on track....then everything was gone.  I had some random things in email, but it was too much to try to put back together.  I gave up about a year later, 100 pages into the dissertation.

This, plus, I have a second Masters in Special Education, and I teach special needs 3rd graders. My MS in C&I also involves a minor in English as a Second Language.

I really like college. I won't be pursuing a doctorate, though. Ever.

  • Well...this is embarrassing, everyone went to college.

Right after high school, I joined an organization called ywam.  I spent a year with them, traveling and doing various mission trips. I spent 6 weeks in Costa Rica where I actually met my husband (he was in the same organization, based out of a different state). Later in the year I spent 6 weeks in Thailand. Afterwards I moved to Wisconsin to be with my boyfriend at the time, we got married, moved to Texas, had a baby, and just moved back to Wisconsin. I never wanted to go to college. There was never anything that I wanted to pursue.

  • Right after high school I went to a super expensive private university and obtained a BS in biochemistry, went to medical school for 1 and 1/2 semester, had a really rough time in my life (deaths, personal issuess) and I said eff that and dropped out.

Went back to school to get a second BS in Nursing, was not satisifed with my job, so I decided to go back to get my NP (nurse practitioner) which is a master's program, and then I found out I was pregnant. I am finishing the progam now, I definetly want to work for a couple of years, and when D is older I might want to teach nursing students (I tutored in college, and by far that has been my favorite job to date) or become a midwife. So I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I voted bachelors, since I am not technically done with my master's yet.

  • I voted for some. I went to school for 3 years for a Spanish degree, with the idea of teaching Spanish in HS. I dropped out after my father passed away and couldn't afford school without my mom's help, who was supporting my brother that was still living at home at the time. I don't think I'll ever go back. I've been working with non-profits for the past 10 yrs and that work has given me the work experience.

  • I have a BA in Anthropology, and a Masters in Urban Planning. I work as a regional planner. I'm glad I was able to find a position in my field; the university I went to churns out planners, and there are not enough positions in the area to accommodate all of them.

  • I have a BA in Political Science and Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations.  I am a final project away from my Master's degree in Public Administration.  (I really need to finish ASAP)

I have been working in local government since the year after I graduated from undergrad.  I originally planned to go to Law School and realized I didn't have the commitment for it.  I would prefer to work in Public Relations over government, but it's working out okay so far.

OMG!  I nearly got my master's in Urban Planning, in fact that is my specialization for my MPA.  As I started the program I realized the job market was really slim, I could be a planner for the City I work for, but I would have had to take a pay cut.  So I switched to MPA.  I wasn't willing to move away for a job since DH's job doesn't relocate and his job is awesome as far as pay and benefits go with no college degree.

  • I have my BBA in Marketing and my MBA without a concentration.  I don't necessarily use the Marketing aspect for my job but having the MBA does negate some of the extra years I would have needed as experience to get to my pay grade so that helps.  Also it helps if I need to or want to become certified in my field (not currently required but something I am expecting eventually).

H is really trying to push me to go on and become a lawyer - NOT something I am interested in at all but he's been doing research and I told him I would consider it.  I'd rather not have the loans I currently have and get more but he said we would figure it out.  Who knows.

  • When I started school, I was a Music Ed major.  Sophomore year, I met DH, and decided that Music Ed wasnt for me.  I stayed 1 more semester there, then dropped out.  I ended up finishing my degree as a part time student, so college took me 8 years.  My next thought was to go to law school, but I ended up getting my BA in Psychological and Social Sciences.  I now have my MS in Counseling with a focus on addictions.  I'm so glad that I pursued this route, as I completely love what I do.
