I read an article recently about how a person's scars, and how they got them, are the most interesting story they can tell. I can't find the article now, but it argued that even "boring" scars tell someone's life story.
Since it's slow so far this morning, does anyone want to play? What scars do you have and how'd you get them?
Re: Scars
Starting from my head: I've got a scar on the bridge of my nose from a riding accident. A horse reared, threw back his head, and clocked me right in the face. He opened a split in my nose and shattered the bone. It healed straight without surgery, just a bit flatter. Lots of people pay for smaller noses, I did it on the cheap!
I've scar tissue in my Eustachian tubes from a swimming accident. That's not visible, but it impacts my life the most, with hearing damage and tendency to infections. I slid down a tiny waterfall in the rainforest, got caught in the current, and was pushed VERY deep and was lucky to get out.
I have a scar on my left arm from a blood draw gone badly, and on each wrist from DeQuervyn's surgery, and many crooked fingers from breaking them and not wanting to take the time to set them. Between riding horses, playing sports, and working with animals, I've broken nearly all of my fingers at some point.
I've a csection scar.
I've got a scar on my right shin, sort of a dent, from hitting a fence while jumping a horse.
When I first tan, you can see my legs are covered in very fine white scars. These are from hiking through razor grass. My legs were SHREDDED.
i have a c-section scar.
i have a scar in my eyebrow a la dylan mckay from when i fell out of bed and hit my eye on the corner of a night table when i was six. i had a huge black eye - it was swollen shut and i looked like a prize fighter and had to wear a patch.
i have two fang marks in my leg from when i got bit by my neighbors dog.
My sister has a similar one, from a pair of surgeries in high school.
She still rocks the flip flops though!
I have a scar on my left hand between my thumb and index finger that restricts the travel of my thumb due to an injury adjusting uneven parallel bars when I was 8.
I have a scar on one of my thighs from being bitten by a bunny when I was 6ish.
I have a scar on my right breast from an excisional breast biopsy when I was 19.
Those are the main ones.
I have 2 extremely faint scars on my face. One line about 1 inch under my right eye along the cheekbone, and another (same size) up my right jaw. Both from being bit by my neighbor's german shephard when I was 9.
I also have a scar on my thumb, from slicing it on a can lid.
Exciting, huh?
I have an ugly scar on my forearm from my dog's nail when he was trying to shake hands. The scratch didn't even bleed but I was pregnant at the time and apparently according to my ob, my body had better things to do then to heal a scratch properly. When people ask and I tell them it is from my dog they assume he is evil, but really he just missed my hand when I asked him to shake!
I had a breast reduction in 2005, so although quite faded by now, I have a huge scar on each boobie-- they go from edge to edge in the under- crease and up and around each nipple- sort of like a key hole.
Sounds like an interesting article!

That's how our house will likely be! I cannot say no to an animal in need when I have space or can make space.
And sadly, people still don't know what to do with most "exotics". People suck with dogs and cats, don't get me wrong, but anything beyond that and people seem shocked that hamsters and snakes and lizards need care too.
How'd your horse accidentally break your nose? The horse that broke mine was sensitive and easy to read, and I foolishly put a new worker on him after only seeing her ride for a few minutes. Out of my sight, she was rough with him ALL DAY. By the time I hopped on him to take him home, he was done and threw a fit to say so. He really didnt mean to hurt me. He hovered over me and looked so worried and guilty as I picked myself up! The new worker got fired... She said she was trying to "make him better". Poor boy.
I have a bunch of scars, I scar very easily and they last forever. A few of the more major ones include:
One on my knee from a biking accident when I was 5 and a huge one on the other knee from a motorcycle collision with a goat while in the Peace Corps.
One on the side of my knee from when I had a broken leg when I was eight. My crutches broke while I was at a sleep over and my fiends dad fixed them with a wire coat hanger and the end came loose and poked deep into my knee.
One on my forearm from where I reached over the dish drain and impaled myself on my new, really sharp knife. I should have had stitches, but had no health insurance.
One on my hand from where I cut myself with scissors. I was maybe 10 and my brother and his friend locked themselves in my bedroom to read my diary (the horror) and I was using scissors to pick the lock and ended up cutting the webbing between my thumb and index finger.
A c-section scar.
And finally I have a scar on my middle toe that goes almost completely around from where I had a cutting board on the counter at and angle and the chopping knife I was using slipped off and almost severed my toes. I still have no feeling in that toe.
I have a scar that looks like a giant pock mark on my cheek from when I was a toddler and my older brother threw a spike at me.
I have a scar on one forearm from goofing off at work and blowing stuff up in the warehouse.
I have a scar on my other forearm from trying to cut cauliflower towards myself like an idiot and I stabbed myself in the arm with a paring knife.
I have a scar from an emergency (like, literally running down the halls yelling) c/s. DH wasn't there because it was a routine appt.
I have a scar on my inner thigh from when I was a teenager and my brother threw a piece of wood at me. A nail in the end gouged my thigh.
I have a 3 inch scar across my knee from when I was in grade 3 and slid down a wet grassy hill on my knees like a slip n slide. Turns out one of the underground sprinklers was still sticking up. Ew.

Please expand on this goat story.
Or maybe not. I'm not sure if the story can live up to what I'm imagining in my head.
Was the goat okay? Because in my imagination, he is fine and stands over you at the end, mocking you. And if anyone thinks goats can't mock you, you haven't spent enough time around goats.
My scar story is the stupidest one ever. I have a scar on the small of my back that I got in high school. I had a metal filing cabinet in my bedroom, the drawer was open, and I was sitting on the floor next to it doing my makeup. When I stood up, I somehow managed to gouge the corner of the metal drawer into the small of my back. The scar is still there.
On the bright side, the location of the scar prevented me from getting a tramp stamp while I was in college, and I think I would've regretted getting a tattoo there. (I did end up getting a tattoo on my side, but I don't regret that.)
ETA - Oh, duh. And my c-section scar. Which frankly, I kind of love.
The one that always makes me smile is the big scar on the bottom of my knee from falling at my rehearsal dinner. We were walking into the luau and I fell and took all of the hide off of my knee. It was so bad that I had to wrap my leg the next day so it wouldn't ooze on my wedding dress. I am a clutz...I wasn't even drunk yet. However, I ended up breaking my own rule and drank too much the night before my wedding because my leg hurt.
I have 2 chicken pox scars on my face, one on my nose and one in eye brow. My mom said that my brother use to scratch my face for me because she told me to sit on my hands (not to itch)
I have a scar on my knee. It's about the size of a quater. I got it running to the bus on the first day of kidnergarden. Busted my knee so bad my mom had to take me to the hospital and they had to do some weird dry ice stuff... missed the first day of school, was so sad.
Then my c-sec scar. 2x over...
I only have 1 scar, on my chin, from playing jump rope at girl guides in those jelly shoes whenni was maybe 7 or 8, and slipping and falling, landing on my chin. I wanted blue stitches so I could match my outfit at school the next day.
My story is boring :[
Another good one is the bite marks on my thumb. I watched my little dog get run over by a car. I ran to pick her up. She was obviously panicked and bit me. I had to rip my thumb out of her mouth.
Then there's the scar DS left on my nipple from those first few weeks of BFing.
I feel like we should start a thread about sibling caused injuries. My sisters and brother and I all beat the sh!t out of each other growing up. Mostly accidentally.
I have a scar that's about this big ----- under my right eye. I got it when I was about five years old. I stood on the edge of the bathtub before getting out (trying to be a superhero) and I slipped and hit my head on the toilet.
I also have a scar like this big ===== on the left side of my chin. This happened on July 4th when I was 14. I was riding a four wheeler on a back road in the country and I looked behind me because there was a car coming. Well the road sloped down on both sides and I just rode straight off into a ditch. The four wheeler flipped and my helmet came off. I didn't even know I was bleeding until I walked back inside and everyone was looking at me.
My BFP Chart
I have 3rd degree burns on my my hands from pulling the coffee pot down on myself by the cord while I was in my walker as a baby.
PSA: just another reason walkers are terrible ideas. Your kid can spill boiling water all over themselves and be unable to get away. I'm damn lucky I only burned my hands. Fortunately I was smart enough to block my face as the pot fell or those burns would be in a much more noticeable place.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves my scars. My body is pretty battered, but I love having reminders of my life!
That is heartbreaking and beautiful.
I have a large scar on my right knee from where I fell while running when I was in college. I tripped and completely split it open on the sidewalk and ripped my running tights. A random girl saw me fall and gave me a ride because I couldn't walk the rest of the way back to my house. It's faded a lot by now, but one time in college a guy told me my legs would be perfect if it weren't for the scar (I did have really nicely shaped legs back then, but whatadouche. I should have told him he'd be perfect except for his major douche-y personality.)
I also have a small scar on the corner of my lower lip that people often mistake for makeup that is not blended in. I honestly cannot remember how I got it.
This is a long list...
I have my c-sec scar.
I have scars on my left breast from having a large begnin mass removed in my 20s (one scar underneath my breast and the "key hole" scar).
I have a chicken pox scar on my left temple.
I have a bumpy scar above my right eyebrow from having an outbreak of shingles 5 years ago, but it's mostly hidden by my eyebrow.
I have scars all over my legs from playing baseball as a kid/teen and slidding into the bases etc. (the scars really compliment the spider veins that are left from some very deep bruises to my calves from getting hit by pitches/line drives
).
I have scarring on the bottom of my right knee from eczema as a kid (my knee would crack open and bleed in the winter).
I have several small scars on my hand from various cuts/burns.
I have a crescent shaped scar on my right elbow from bumping the element in the oven when I was a teenager.
I have a keloid scar on my left upper arm from getting shots as a kid.
I have scars on the back of both ears from getting them pinned back as a kid (only visible if you pull my ears forward and look really closely).
And I have scars on both my corneas from a reaction to wearing contact lenses 4-1/2 years ago (they are visible if you look for them because the scars make the top edge of my irises a slightly paler colour then the rest - but if I ever decide to get laser eye surgery to correct my vision they would be able to get rid of the scarring too).
Geez, from that list I am a mess! I am very pale (I have my mom's red-head paler than pale skin tone even though I don't have the red hair) and all my scars are quite visible.

Me too.
I'm loving the descriptions of the injuries as well. I'm horrified and thrilled at the same time. I have issues. I love hearing about crazy accidents.
