Hi ladies! Just curious, about how far along into your cycle did you concieve? I'm talking roughly/guesstimate. My mom is 100% convinced that I concieved on August 17th, but I started my period August 15th. I find that highly unlikely, but she says you can get pregnant while on your period. I believe it was more around the 27th, like most conception estimates tell me. Now that my LO is measuring 4-5 days ahead, she will not let it go that she "knew" the moment I concieved. Any May mommies know when they concieved? I personally don't know anyone who has ever concieved while on their period.
Re: Conception
Ummmmmm. Why does your mom feel so 'convinced'? This is a little weird. And many kiddos measure ahead and behind throughout pregnancy and catch up and fall back again. Did you have an early dating ultrasound?
ETA I don't have a true cycle day as I hadn't had a period in three + years when we conceived. But it was on DH's birthday! :-)
She swears she knew the second of implantation when she was pregnant with my sister. My sister was in the hospital all of August, and one day I was visiting my mom pulled me aside and asked if I was pregant. I said no, I am one my period. The day of her memorial service, I got a BFP. I said wow, this is a special baby from my sister, since it looks like I concieved within days of her passing. I don't think my mom liked that, and she snapped no I concieved the 17th. She thinks that she has amazing mother's intuition and tells everyone she called me out the day I concieved lol
Awe congrats! Yeah, my nurse has said the measuring ahead/behind really doesn't mean a lot unless it is a significant difference. Looks like most of us concieved close to our fertile period, not on our cycle lol
Yeah, I don't think we would have ever talked about it had it not been for her asking me out of nowhere at the hospital (I wasn't eating and kept getting sick, but that was from stress) & then me happening to get pregnant shortly after. I love my mom, but she is one of those people that can't ever admit when they are wrong, and loves to make things about themselves without realizing it.
I wAs charting. Got my period July 28, pretty sure I conceived on the 12th of August though. Due may 4th and baby is measuring for an April 30 due date. My DS was a big baby and my husband is a big guy so I think I should be due around may 7 if you go by conception but I'm sure ds2 will be big and I'm going to evict him around 39 or 40 weeks if he won't come out on his own! DS was 8lbs 10 oz and I kicked him out a day before my dur date! Lol
I was tracking, so I know that I ovulated on cycle day 12. Sex was happening every day, or almost (I miss that!)
It is *possible* to conceive on your period, but it's unusual. You would either have to have really long periods, or you ovulated very early.
Most women's luteal phase (time between ovulation and period) is the same, even if their ovulation times are not, and the norm is 14 days. So if you count back 14 days from the first day that you should have gotten your period, you can roughly figure out your ovulation time.
Of course, that's assuming that your periods were regular every month. If they werent, then it's not that easy.
Actually, you can ONLY conceive during your fertile period, AKA ovulation. Most women ovulate approximately in the middle of their cycle (where first day of period = day 1), which is usually around day 14 for a typical 28 day cycle. That said, many women have shorter or longer cycles (e.g., their periods come every 24 days or every 35 days), in which case ovulation still USUALLY happens 14 days before your period (not counting those with short luteal phases, but that's a whole different story). So if you had a 24 day cycle, you would typically ovulate around day 10, and if you had a 35 day cycle, you would probably ovulate around day 21. When people claim that women can get pregnant on their menstrual period, it's usually in the case of a short cycle, combined with the fact that sperm can live up to 5 days. So if you had a 24 day cycle and ovulated on day 10, you could theoretically have sex on day 5 and the sperm would still be alive by the time you ovulated 5 days later. Many women bleed for 5-7 days, so in this case, you would still be bleeding when you had sex.
Long story short, it's near impossible for you to conceive on day two of your cycle. Sorry, but your mom is wrong.
ETA: I should add, I agree with the others that in the case of your mom, it's just best to let it go. If she gets some comfort from the proximity to your sister's passing, let her have that. And, fwiw, just because you likely conceived after she passed doesn't mean she didn't have anything to do with it. Sorry about your loss.

Aww, thanks! It's weird trying to grieve and process her loss and be excited about pregnancy, but I love knowing that my sister played a part in giving us new life and light in a dark time of her parting. Like I said, love my mom but she can't admit she is wrong. When announcing my pregnancy to anyone, she makes sure to tell them she was the first to know. I don't mind giving that one to her, but when I add a little special comment that this baby came within days of my sister's passing, my mom has to butt in and counter that with an oh no I know you concieved the 17th, just like I knew right away when I concieved!

I thought that you could get pregnant from any point after you stopped bleeding up until you started again, but I have never really looked into it. IMO I didn't think it was possible to concieve while bleeding since the egg was being dispelled and there wasn't an egg ready to be fertilized yet. From the looks of everyone's repsones, just about everyone concieved around the 14 day mark into their cycle, like your math says haha. My cycles are 26 days, but that still puts my fertile period closer to the 28th, not the 17th.
(1) You're mom is whacked out (sorry)
(2) I'm sorry about your sister and I do think that it is possible she had something to do with it.
(3) see above with what everyone is saying about the biology of menstrual cycles
(4) My "stats": LMP Aug 12, +OPK Aug 28, due to a lot of things the only time around then that we DTD was Aug 28 in the late evening, BFP Sept 12 (according to iPhone app which accurately tracked my period but not ovulation: due for period Sept 13--my cycle was around 30-32 days).
I wouldn't press it with your mom though, she's a bit too off her rocker to actually understand science and how things work. You know how your body works, she doesn't.
You ovulate on a certain day, and the egg only lives for about 24 hours after that. Initial fertilization happens in the fallopian tubes, not the uterus itself. So, it's not like there is an egg hanging around in the ute for a couple of weeks waiting for sperm.

I guess I really don't have a clue how a woman's cycle works then. Golly! I thought that your actual period was from the egg making it's way down your tubes and out, bringing endometrium & tissue with it, causing the bleeding. I thought that fertilization took place in uterus, that eggs that were fertilized in the tube were eptopic pregnancies. Time for me to read up!
Honestly, I didnt really know the in's and out's of it all, either, until I decided to TTC. Then I learned about my cycle like it was my job, plus I'm one of those people that researches everything until I go blind. I was pretty astonished at my lack of knowledge, and it seems like many, many women have never really been taught about how it all *really* works, too.
An egg that is fertilized and then implants in the fallopian tube is ectopic, which is bad. Implanting is different than fertilization. The sperm travel to the tube, the egg is fertilized in the tube, and then travels down as it's cells are dividing, and when it gets to the uterus it is ready to implant into the fertile endometrium. If an egg never implants and your body never starts producing specific hormones that tell your body it is pregnant, you will have a period and shed that lining. Then everything is shiny and new, waiting for the next time you ovulate.
It is scary what I found when I searched what day did I conceive. SOOO many women wondering who is the father and hoping to find out by the day they concieved. Thanks for sharing, I found a basic chart that breaks down the process you explained but in days, which leads one to believe your time frame for concieving during each cycle is pretty short and precise. It's interesting to know what is going on, especially since what I thought I knew was not very accurate!
She is very intellegent, actually. She, like many woman out there, believe it is possible to concieve during any time. I think it's more about being excited and clinging to the mother's intuation than anything else. It is possible to conceive on your period, though rare and there are other factors that contribute to its likelihood.

I think its more so because she pulled me aside at the hospital and asked if I was pregnant, then I became pregnant. She is excited, and she feels strongly that it was her mother's intuition picking up on it. I find that better than what I read on the first tri board, where women experience cravings and sudden symptoms almost intstantaneously after implantation.
My Mom was convinced that Baby A was a girl. Like... would bet her life on it. Unfortunately (for her) Baby A has a penis... so... guess not. I don't know why people get so adamant about things that have nothing to do with them.
For what it's worth I know exactly when I conceived because we used a trigger injection plus IUI. Kinda hard to mess those dates up.
The way biology works you shouldn't technically be able to get pregnant during that stage of your cycle as lots of essential hormones for ovulation are missing.

I agree with you about the instantaneous symptoms and, as I read once, feeling the sperm enter the egg. I hope I didn't come across as being mean. I love that your mom is excited and wants to be a part of this. I just couldn't stop laughing because it's also awkward to think about someone else knowing when exactly it happened.
Oh no you didn't at all! I think it's funny too. She knows there is no possible way for her to actually tell, its more along the lines of what Rachel Goldstein said like a mom fully believing they know the gender of the baby. I just can't believe she is sticking with it even after I told her I was one my period that day lol. But it doesn't hurt anyone. She lights up when she tells people she knew right when she concieved my sister, so maybe her adamently believing she knew when I concieved too gives her some stronger connection to my pregnancy or connecting my pregnancy to my sister in her mind. Who knows!
Awe, that's such an awesome & special day! Congrats (:
