Tristan.  I love this name, by the way!

Always say no to random, unnecessary Ys.

Word!  Why are people always tempted to throw a "y" in everything?

We are considering the y because we like that it is a different spelling. It clearly is not a obviously terrible idea to us, that would be a matter of opinion. Thank for you opinion and then some.

Here's one of my issues with swapping vowels for Y. It doesn't just change the spelling to be more "unique", it often times changes the pronunciation. There are phonics rules. People who aren't familiar with the name Tristan could be confused as to how to pronounce Trystan and pronounce it TRY-stan, with a hard I sound. So IMO creative spellings actually make things much more challenging for the child who has to live with the name forever.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Clearly, it is a matter of opinion, which is why I asked, since using the Y would never even occur to me. Is having an unusual name important to you? If so, have you considered using something less common than Tristan? There's a great link in mjreilly's siggy that gives rankings for about 15,000 boys' names. It may provide some inspiration if finding a "different" name is important to you.

Meanwhile, in my neck of the woods, Tristan is actually pretty different and uncommon on its own. Adding the "y" would be making a pretty uncommon name even more uncommon.

That said, it could be popular where you are but if you love the name, you shouldn't let the deter you.

I definitely get what you mean and I appreciate your input. Thank you!

I agree with pp that Tristan is the way to go. I know it's hard to hear harsh opinions of the name you're considering, but I actually think that's one of the biggest benefits of this board. Posters here will tell you what friends, family, and co-workers will be thinking but will be too polite to say. I think it's good to know how a name will really impact other's perceptions of you and your child, before it's too late to do anything about it.

    Makes sense, thank you!
  • I know you already have many responses but I just wanted to say that I love the name Tristan and think it is unique itself without the "y". I also agree with what other posters said about people possibly mispronouncing it Try-stan, the annoyance of him having to correct people, and the new trend of using a "y" to make names feminine.
  • Tristan for sure.

It's hard not to get offended when some people are pretty much calling me an idiot for even considering using the y. I want honest opinions but I wasn't expecting some people to be so rude.

You are completely 100 correct. You can be honest without acting like a petty little middle schooler, and I think people on here feel the urge to just let it all out because they can hide behind their computer screens and feel superior with a sense of security in the fact that they can get away with it on the internet with no repercussions. You'll find the occasional person on here who can be honest and act their age and give you sound, constructive criticism. I've had plenty of ladies private message me about how they have similar tastes and we trade ideas back and forth, and can do so without the snide comments from everyone who wants to lose their cool because there are some people in this world who have no interest in naming their child Catharine, Adam, Evelyn, Nicholas, Abigail, etc. They're just narrow minded, let it roll of your shoulders.

I personally like the spelling with an 'i', but have met people with a 'y' instead. I'd be sure about my middle name before I decided, just so it looks right.

  • If you wouldn't have put "Tristan" in the same sentence, I would've thought "Trystan" would be pronounced "Try-Stin"....people will screw that up all the time!
