But I'm curious ? why are you even considering the y? It seems like such an obviously terrible idea to me that I can't really guess why someone would consider it. Why do you like it? I'm not trying to be snotty. I am honestly baffled and would be interested in hearing about a perspective that I have trouble imagining.

    This exactly

  • We are considering the y because we like that it is a different spelling. It clearly is not a obviously terrible idea to us, that would be a matter of opinion. Thank for you opinion and then some.

Yup.  The "Y" doesn't make it look feminine, it looks like a typo.

  • Please don't get offended, people are trying to help.

The word tryst was the first thing I noticed in your alternate spelling. Add that to the fact that "Mack" is slang for flirt or seduce.

Trystan Mack makes me think "tryst and mack." As in, to meet up secretly for a sexual encounter and seduce.

Why does it need to be different? What benefit does that give your child that would be worth the headache of having to spell his name for people all the time?

my thoughts exactly, except the name itself is not my style.  if you must go with it, just spell it normal.

I know it's a bit jarring to hear that we all have strong opinions on Ys, but many of us are on this board a lot and see a lot of names go by.  The "substitute Y for an I (or A, or E)" trend over and over is just making parents look like they don't know how to spell.

I used to want to spell my name Kym.  I thought it was awesome and different.  And then I realized that the Y doesn't do anything but misspell the name and a name is word just like any other word - it has a history and a correct spelling.

Aside from that, your kid will have to spell his name every. time. someone  writes it down because no one will know "Oh, his parents replaced an I with a Y."  Many times adding the Y changes the pronunciation of the name, but people just look beyond that, which again is making those of us that see names all the time get frustrated with this not well thought-out trend.  Happily, that is not the case here, but whether you spell it Tristan or Trystan, yelling his name across the playground will sound just like every other Tristan out there.

Just think about it.  Don't let your anger at us cloud which spelling you choose - think objectively about what we have said.

Thank you very much, I appreciate this and will definitely take all of this into consideration. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me.

  • I agree with pp that Tristan is the way to go. I know it's hard to hear harsh opinions of the name you're considering, but I actually think that's one of the biggest benefits of this board. Posters here will tell you what friends, family, and co-workers will be thinking but will be too polite to say. I think it's good to know how a name will really impact other's perceptions of you and your child, before it's too late to do anything about it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Clearly, it is a matter of opinion, which is why I asked, since using the Y would never even occur to me.

Is having an unusual name important to you? If so, have you considered using something less common than Tristan? There's a great link in mjreilly's siggy that gives rankings for about 15,000 boys' names. It may provide some inspiration if finding a "different" name is important to you.
  • Tristan, definitely. And I love the mn you guys have chosen too! This is definitely on my short list of favorite boy names.

The main reason I don't like the "y" spelling is because of the word "tryst", but it doesn't look half as bad as Tristyn, which I think I have seen come through this board before.
