I'm not sure if my baby is just colicky or if it's something more. What made you think your baby had (silent) reflux? I know obviously a doctor has to diagnose it.
My baby is gassy and fussy - especially in the morning. I was suspecting that maybe we weren't getting enough burps overnight (she is hard to burp overnight since she tends to fall back asleep quickly) but even on the nights she does burp she's very gassy the next morning. She also has been having problems with the first feeding of the morning. Lots of pulling off or not eating enough (or what I consider enough based on most feedings).
She doesn't spit up a lot, but her tummy is very rumbly while eating. It's like I can hear her swallow and then her stomach goes nuts. This isn't all the time but I imagine it doesn't feel good.
She cries a lot - I know all babies cry and a lot seems to be from the gas but now I'm wondering if it's more. I thought babies begin to outgrow it around 3 months but she doesn't seem to be getting better. At times I think she's doing worse.
I don't know if this relates to any of it: She just started daycare Jan 2 (3 days a week) and I notice that she doesn't eat very regularly. I BF on demand and she usually is on a schedule of about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. At daycare she'll eat an ounce here, 2 ounces there - very sporadically. Could be the daycare, could be her.
Thanks for reading and thanks for any advice/thoughts.
Re: what made you think silent reflux?
DS1 had silent reflux. He was FF. The symptoms that made me eventually think silent relflux were arching his back after eating, doing better after eating when we kept him upright, refusing to sleep flat on his back, crying or being fussy in the hour after every bottle, when we switched to a more watery formula than we had been using he started almost projectile spitting up. He was eventually diagnosed by a GI, but even with treatment his symptoms didn't completely go away until almost a year old.
DS2 has MSPI. He is EBF. His symptoms sound more like what you are describing to me. He was very gassy. Had green mucousy poop. Was an all around not happy baby any time of day but late night and early morning were the worst.
Have you tried eliminating dairy? It can take up to 4 weeks for dairy to completely get out of your system, so when you eliminate you have to wait that full time period to determine if eliminating it helps. Alos some kids are really sensitive and need you to eliminate hidden dairy as well. This would include things like chocolate, some breads, most processed treats, etc. www.godairyfree.com has a really good list of what ingredients to avoid. www.mspimama.com has a ton of good dairy free recipes.
Good luck! Hope you figure out what is upsetting your LO soon!
We haven't increased her meds in a month and I know she has grown to a point that they would probably need to be increased to be more effective. With the same dose and the block feeding she has been doing much better. I think that although she may have had some reflux it was actually the let down that was making her pull off, choke, have gas etc. it may be worth while to talk to a LC. GL!!
Almost exactly this. Also, he would pull off while BFing and arch his back.
My oldest behaved as your LO is doing at daycare. She ate as little as she could during the day because she preferred the breast to the bottle. She would make up for her hunger strike at night.
I agree with the above. My son was pretty close to what you're describing. Did you have a Csection? I think that contributed a little bit to what my son has. We started with gas drops, which helped. We then added a probiotic, which helps a ton. If we forget to give it to him (it's only happened twice) we can tell immediately in the morning. I then eliminated milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. He turned into a new baby. I can count on one hand how many times he cried this weekend. He used to cry for 45 minutes a crack before.
Good luck.
