My degree is in molecular biology and I currently do research on neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer's, ALS) in model systems ie fruit flies. So... not really helpful on a day-to-day basis
I am also a fan of the outdoors and would consider myself knowledgeable about skiing, camping, hiking etc.
I always wondered what your specialty is, and now that I know, all I can say is that you are in an extremely fascinating field! I am always especially interested in new discoveries that are made in Alzheimer's studies and other neurodegenerative diseases. The effects on people are just heart wrenching and the diseases are not well understood (as you well know) so I greatly appreciate your work in this field!
Uneducated hillbilly deluxe. Redneckinize. And I know how to take boxes off trucks. I am full of knowledge, but limit your questions. I' m important and busy.
Mobile technology. Want to know something about a tablet or a phone? I am your girl. I also have picked up a ton about eyes since I work in technology for eye doctors.

I'm a veterinarian and was the resident side eyer when people on tb gave up their pets to shelters when their los came along.
Don't know if you remember my situation with our beagle and Abby around Thanksgiving, but hopefully it was a little better than we left our beagle with my IL's. A little better?

Reproductive medicine. I'm far from an expert, but I was very well trained in my last job. I know lots about various types infertility, how the reproductive system works, fertility meds and treatments, and early pregnancy. Among other things. I also worked as an assistant manager at an art and custom framing shop for the better part of my 20's. I can pick out a complimentary mat and frame for a piece of artwork like nobodies business.
I'm an environmentalist. I have a degree in sustainability and I manage environmental contracts for the state of CA, L.A. County, and Cal EPA. I also write about lifestyle greening.
Do you deal with EISs? I imagine environmental law and mandates in CA would be more hairy than most other states. Sounds messy.
Oops. Meant to quote.
Heavens no! I'm in the education sector. I specialize in curriculum development, youth leadership, network and coalition building and behavior change.
If anyone has any questions about "going green" I'm your girl!

Lol.
I remember when I was in school there was talk of more sustainable roofing materials (e.g., using white roofing instead of black to reflect the heat a house absorbs). Have you heard anything about that?
I'm an expert in metal, rubber and asphalt roofing. It makes me sad.

I get it, but I don't get it. When E was about 11 months we had major problems with one of our cats. We were fortunate to have my ILs take her, but I was looking into shelters before that and had a well respected Vet in the area agree with what I was doing. In fact tell me he had to do it when his children were young and had a problem. Kids come first.
My expertise is that I've worked in news/media for 13 years. No idea how that can be helpful to anyone! I do however like to consider myself Nancy Drew and like to solve mysteries.
You dont get that vets take an oath to help and save animals or you dont get it cause your vet seemed to miss that day in vet school? Shelters are a death sentence. I dont know what the issues were, but there are plenty of alternatives that your vet should have given you before agreeing that a shelter was the best option. Glad it worked out for your cat in the end.
I don't get how kids don't come first in some people's mind...and the vet I spoke with is known world-wide without getting into details.
Pediatrician here...which is why I mostly lurk! Too many professional boundary issues to consider! In the world of pediatrics the line between opinion and medical advice can be kind of blurry.
This is a great thread! I always knew that we were a smart bunch. Although just because you don't have a degree doesn't automatically make you not an expert. Theisens, you do more than move boxes, you are into logistics! If you do what I think you do, that is a hard-ass job.
I'm a teacher (on hiatus) with a double major in early childhood education and elementary education, with a masters in integrating art into the curriculum. I also worked at a dental office, and initially went back to college for dental hygiene. After completing some interesting and fun pre-req's, I switched my major to education.

YES! I knew I liked you.
P.S. Your dental knowledge has come in handy on here. I'm remembering to clean Lily's teeth every day and flossing is my New Year's resolution (although the stomach bug delayed my start).

I get that you're a vet and this is your professional responsibility...but, for the non vets, pets are pets, not people and people, particularly children, come first in line before pets. There are wonderful no kill shelters that love and care for displaced pets and have very high adoption rates. I've gotten all of my cats over the years at a great shelter. Not all shelters are death sentences. My expertise...I'm an elementary teacher so I know the ins and outs of your young child's education. I also have a BS in English, with a minor in Art History. So not only can I discuss Rebrandt, I can also write a kick azz paper about him. Oh, and even though I was an English major, I hate reading and remember nothing about the hundreds of texts I've read. So don't ask me about literature, I won't know. But, if you need help writing...I'm your girl!
I was unaware that veterinarians thought of animals as people. I must have missed that during the whole 12 years it took me to get my degree . I also never said children shouldnt come first. I said there are alternatives to taking a pet to a shelter (a kill shelter-hence the death sentence comment). My point was that if you think its ok to take a pet that you have had in your family to a place where they are going to euthanize them if they arent adopted without looking for an alternative either through medication or rehoming, then there is something seriously wrong with your thought process. And there are plenty of veterinarians that will put your animal down at your request when there is nothing wrong with them. I am not one of them...thankfully.
You made the general shelter comment. And you implied that you think it's horrible if someone tosses an animal out to a shelter instead of taking the time to find an alternative. What if there is no alternative? Some people don't treat the lives of animals as they would the lives of humans. You're a vet because that's your love. Not all people feel the same about animals. I rescue all of my pets but I know plenty of people buy pedigree instead. Should they be rescuing animals? Maybe. It's a choice. Stop judging.
xoxo lisajay09....you said it better than I could.

Yay!!! Remember it takes 7 days for your gums to 'shape up' (generally speaking) and 21 days for something, anything, to become a habit :-)
How do I train my dogs to stay the hell out of the trash? Every Effing Day lately!! It's ridiculous. Today MH caught one of our dogs with his paws up on the counter eating out of a butter tub. They're well fed, but they think the trash is their shmorgusboard (I totally butchered the spelling there.)
That is pretty funny, though probably not for you all. Butter IS delicous. The easiest thing might be to get a trash can they can't get into:) Set them up for success. If you seriously want training ideas, feel free to PM me.

If you get a pet you should treat it with some dignity....if you cant and arent willing to do that then you shouldnt have them. There are always alternatives to giving a pet up to a shelter. nbsp;And nbsp;I will always judge people who cant figure that out. nbsp;
HOW can you say such a broad statement? There isn't ALWAYS an alternative. What should someone do whose dog has a vicious outburst and bites their 6 month old's face? Suppose there's NO other option but a shelter, because I doubt people will be lining up to take the dog. Should they just let the dog out? Drive the dog to a remote place and drop it in the middle of nowhere? Or wait and hope that the dog doesn't do it again before going to the vet only to spend 100 bucks on doggy Prozac to help with the dog's temperament? Seriously? And by the way..as much as I respect vets, I think you all take huge advantage of people and their pocketbooks as you guilt us into 40 dollar feline car sickness meds because my cat threw up in his carrier on the ride to the vet..true story....ugh...don't get me started!
Without getting too much into it, I really do not understand the generalizations. There is not always an other option. I love my kitties and I love my pup. However, if one of my kids has health issues because if them, we will need to find them a new home. If I cannot find one in a timely manner, it would have to be a shelter. If Shadow, my 85 pound dog attacked the kids, I don't think I could take the time to search for an alternative to a shelter. Just saying.
I am the first to rip into people too lazy or too stupid to try to make it work with their pets, but sometimes there is just only one way. Thankfully, this is no issue here as the kids seem fine with all three of our furries, Shadow is the best dog ever anyways and Alastair and the cats are currently working out a base of living together. Yes, he gets scratched, and yes, they get grabbed. And both parties have found a way to make it work.
But seriously, blanket statements really don't help here.
