Babies: 6 - 9 Months

New here! Solids question.

My DD just turned 6 months... already!

We have started solids and for the most part she is enjoying new food! My question for you guys is do you give your LO a little food to try and experience feeding themselves? Or do you just stick to using a spoon at this age?

Re: New here! Solids question.

  • we are in about the same boat! My lo is just 7 months now, we started the puff rice cereal about 2 weeks ago, and now she eats those for her solids breakfast. And we are doing the teething biscuits, she is figuring them out! So offer them and see if your lo doesn't do any thing try showing him/her. That's how we got Eva to eat them! now she watches us when we eat, and expects food then too! its hard to eat and feed her too, so the cereal tides her over until one of us is done!

  • We started pur?es at 4.5mo.  We started giving her puffs at 6mo.  I gave her pieces of avocado to feed herself around 7mo I think, but didn't start offering other table foods until she started refusing pur?es at 9mo.

  • Try it both ways and you'll soon know what works for your baby. I always planned to do BLW, and everything I read said start that at 6 months. DD is 6 months tomorrow (sorry for jumping on this board early!), and it has been very clear for the last 2 weeks that she wants food, so we've started the process early. She is showing the she is very capable of self feeding, and she will also take a loaded spoon from us and feed herself from it. I was expecting her to take a while to get the hang of things, but so far she's doing great.

on the other hand, my good friend has a ds who is 8 weeks older than my dd and he is not interested in self feeding one bit. I think it totally depends on the baby, there's no right or wrong.

  • We started solids at 6 months and did some purees, but mainly table foods.  She did a lot of playing and experimenting at first, but is now getting really good with her pincer grasp, picking up food, chewing and eating.  She absolutely loves everything and gets really excited whenever she sees food.

Daycare was not comfortable with giving her finger food that early on so she gets purees there.  It definitely doesn't have to be all or nothing!

  • The ONLY thing DD has ever eaten from a spoon is yogurt. Everything else she feeds to herself. I just make sure the food is soft enough and easy for her to grasp.
