Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Chill baby?

Hi! My LO is six months today so I am new to your board...although i have been lurking for about a month now!

I know I may regret writing this post in a couple of months... but my baby doesn't move. he has no desire to roll over (although he has done it belly to back a few times by accident recently). he prefers to hang out and grab at things in his gym...or roll to his side and play with toys that way... and now that he is an expert sitter, he just wants to sit and play or sit next to me and look at books or hold toys in his hand. he is about 20 pounds and 28 inches long... not a super chunker but not a small guy either.

does anyone else have a baby who just like to chill out?  how do i get this baby moving?

Re: Chill baby?

  • Yeah my kiddo was like that. He just has an unusually long attention span for a baby. He has always been that way. Still he will sit in his jumparoo for over an hour if I let him. Now that he can kind of commando crawl he is definitely on the move. I can't count how many times I've had to pull him out from under the Christmas tree this week. I'm nervous to see what it's like when he's REALLY crawling. He's already so quick! I don't think there's really anything you can do. They say tummy time helps develop those crawling muscles. As long as he is hitting his milestones within the normal ranges there's nothing to be worried about or anything. My little guy has always hit milestones on the later end of normal...he's just a chill guy who likes to take things one step at a time. Sit back and enjoy your non-mobile baby!

  • When we were trying to encourage LO to move more, we would put his toys just out of reach so he had to roll/wiggle/scoot along to get to them.  I'd sometimes be "mean mommy" and keep moving the toy further back every time he was close to grabbing it to get him to keep inching along.

The biggest motivators for him right now are the dog's toys (ick) and the ornaments on the lowest branches of our Christmas tree.  He will roll or scoot across the entire living room now if he sees something interesting on the other side.  It's definitely made life more challenging and nerve-wracking now that he's semi-mobile, so enjoy the chill time for now!  :O)

DD is super chill. She is perfectly content sitting and playing by herself or watching the cat and dog. She is more of an observer, but so am I. We do the above (bolded) to try and get her moving. She HATES laying down so she was very late in rolling over and her moving consists of scooting on her butt. Her ped said they aren't worried because she was super advanced in sitting and pulling up.
