It's that season! I know some people have had them, and some people are still planning.
For the people that had them, how was it? What would you do differently? Any advice?
For the people still planning, how is it going? What is stressing you out? Any thing you need help with or advice on?
Re: Birthday party check in
P's party is this Saturday at 11am. lol. What was I thinking?? Also, I made the invites & just said to RSVP - no date to RSVP by. That was really smart.
I have to clean the house, but I'm thinking about hiring someone to come & do the floors. It is getting hard to bend down & do things like that.
Although, I kind of don't want to pay the $$, and might just do a decent-ish job & call it good.
I'm trying to figure out the cake. I might just order one from Costco. Our favorite bakery doesn't do Minnie Mouse, so that plan went out the window. I made cupcakes last year & that SUCKED. I kind of want to make this cake (but in pink), but I think I has more ambition than skillz & time.
We have pretty much planned everything, just need to do the shopping for the party food.
The only thing that is stressing me out is it has just been so busy...Thanksgiving, Christmas, Bday party....I feel like I need to breathe LOL.
Wow...what an awesome cake!!! That would be so cool!
I think we're going to brave Chuck E Cheese.....
Just us, grandparents, aunts/uncles & niece/nephew, so 13 people total, counting H!
We're doing it on the 15th (BD the 13th) b/c our extended family Christmas party is on the 16th, and we can "celebrate" with second cousins, great aunts/uncles, great-grandparents, etc. It's at the YMCA, and there is open gym & swimming, so I'm kind of excited! Buuuuut, I told SO that HE is going to be taking R swimming, as there is NO WAY I'm putting my 3 month PP azz in a bathing suit in front of my whole family! LOL
Can't believe our "LOs" are turning 2!!!!!! GAH!
C's party isn't until January 5th, so I've got a lot of time to get organized. My main mission is to keep it low key because his 1st b-day was a zoo!
I ordered the invites and am just waiting for the Etsy seller to send the final file. Then I'm just e-mailing those bad boys out. I'm going to order or pick up food (pizza, fruit/veggie platters, chips and dip), so there is nothing for me to make. I've bought the few decorations that I plan on having. I just need to order cake and balloons.
The main thing I'm focused on are party favors. I'm totally copying Halo and doing train conductor hats and whistles to go with the Thomas theme. The only problem is actually finding them at my local Target and Dollar Tree.
I'm doing a Minnie Mouse theme today. I'm still debating whether to make a cake or just order one. We live in a small condo so I decided to have it at a nearby park. More room for everyone and I don't have to clean!!
After I convinced my mom that it would be a good idea to contact the location in advance and send out invitations, she's managed to actually take over planning from there. (She'd offered to do this since we're moving the 12th and DD's party is the 16th.) She's even run with the Caillou theme that I suggested and made custom invitations.
Other than that though the party is going to be as big of a surprise to me as it is to DD.

We already had J's party. It went pretty well. During the singing he just wanted to grab the candles and kept yelling "cake!" (but then a few days later he was singing "birthday to me, birthday to me" so I guess he was listening)
And gift opening was hard. He would open one and want to play with it, duh, so he would get really upset when we would take it away for him to open another gift. I don't really know what you could do differently though.
We are going with Elmo I'm pretty sure
I would have loved to have my friends with kids there and just more people in general.
The food and cake came out really well so I am happy with that.
Ours was this past weekend! The weather was beautiful which was perfect since we had the party at a nearby community garden complete with playhouse, sandbox, and a chickens. I think everyone had a great time! The cupcake presentation looked great too, thank you ladies!
We did O'd party over the weekend and it went pretty well. We stuffed 15 adults and 5 kids into our house so it was a bit chaotic.
The big thing for us was to keep everything moving. We said we were going to eat at 6, so we ate at 6. After dinner we let everyone mellow for about 30mins then moved onto presents. After presents we went right into cake and ice cream. Everyone was able to visit and go home when they wanted after that because there wasn't anything party related that they would miss since we got it out of the way early.
You could totally make that! I have a few really good tutorials on marshmallow fondant that I could send you. I had never even attempted a cake when I made Charlie's and these tutorials helped a ton.

We did C's party a few weeks ago and I think it went well. We cleared out the room and dragged all of his big toys and ride on things and the kids just had a blast. A little cake, some presents, and that was it.
The hit of the party, surprisingly, was the popcorn machine I borrowed from work. All of the kids were mesmerized by it and then munched on popcorn the rest of the time. Win.

Yeah, that would be great. Thanks!!!. I'll send you a pm with my address.
The popcorn machine sounds like an awesome idea! Food and entertainment in one!
I was just able to rent the playground on Saturday. They only open up the calendar a month in advance. So then I went and ordered the invites, but they are going to take 2 weeks between production and getting here, so I'm not sure if I should send a save the date type email since by the time I pass out the invites it will be less than 3 weeks until the party...
Otherwise, I need to order a cake. I was going to bake it myself, but meh, a penguin seems more difficult than the frog I did last year. And black frosting is really messy to work with.
I've got goody bags done.
Need to get tableclothes and other paper goods. And figure out a playlist for the running around the soft playground part.

We will definitely be doing something low key this year...DDs bday is the 24th. With different family members already planned parties it looks like we are just doing dinner and cake on Thursday the 20th. I guess next year I need to reserve a day before Thanksgiving.
DD 12.2010
I dont think we will open gifts until after his nap. Too much to fit into 2 hours and I'd rather the kids play than sit and watch presents.
No theme.
sofa - you should totally make that cake! Looks awesome. Though I get it if you just want to buy it, lol.
We had our party the weekend of Thanksgiving. After hosting 15 people @our house on T-Day. Yeah.. it was nuts! It was a Cookie Monster theme, with about 25 adults & 10 kids. We ordered 2- 5 foot burritos from a Mexican place, which was pretty good, and I made 4 kinds of cookies to go with the theme. We got a small cake from the grocery store, which we just had them put blue polka dots & trim on to "match" the theme but not go crazy with it.
The party actually went great. It was ffrom 1030-1230, and the weather was really nice so we were mostly outside in our backyard. Griffin LOVED everyone singing to him, though he did get a little overwhelemd by all the people at times.
My sage advice is to offload the work whenever possible. Order food if it's going to make your life easier. Have other people pick up the cake or food, if you can. And try to enjoy the party and the event rather than worrying about it. :-)
We did Jack's parties on Sunday. We had one in the morning for friends/kids and one in the evening for family. Both were 2 hours long and that seemed just right for both. Having 2 parties was definitely a good idea, I can't remember who suggested it to me, but thank you! We had 24 people total, and that many together would have made our house really crowded and I'm sure it would have been scary for J.
We did a Thomas & Friends theme. I put up streamers and put lots of Thomas pictures on the walls, and made a few other little thing, but I wish I had taken time to make some more decorations. Last year I made J a special cake which was time consuming, so this year I just made cupcakes and arranged them to make a 2. It was way easier and just as cute! I did really simple snacks for the kids. Annies crackers, pb sandwiches cut like stars, cheese, apples, bananas & pears. I had a veggie tray and an apple crumb cake for the parents in the morning. In the evening we just ordered a bunch of pizzas.
We opened presents at both parties. He did want to play with them as soon as he opened them, but a good distraction was, "Look! Daddy is bringing you another present to open!" lol He had a lot of fun dumping bags and ripping paper.
eta: stuff.
Her bday is the 24th, so we're going to do pizza & cake on the 23rd while DH's family is all in town (plus then that solves what I serve them for dinner that night!). It will be DH's 8 family (all adults), plus 4 adults from my immediate family, 6 other adult cousins with their 4 kids (ages 1-4).
Do I need to do loot bags? There will only be 4 other kids here, and it's really not a "party". I will have cake for her and we'll open presents, but I'm even debating doing balloons. I feel like she's still too young... Do I need a theme and decorations?
Suggestions please? PS- you can tell me that I'm a lame mom, I can take it...
I am having A's party on her birthday the 21st. I am mostly prepared but I still have some organizing to do. I bought a ton of stuff like tablecloths, plates etc but really wan 't paying attention to the count. Cake ordered, Elmo booked, invites out, birthday tu-tu ordered so I think I am in good shape.
We are doping a Sesame st theme with heavy emphasis on Abby and Elmo so it so I am kind of more in to the little details at this point.
DS's party is this Sunday at a kids' gym place. We invited way too many people & yay for us, they ALL rsvp'ed yes! ugh
I made the invitations through Shutterfly, bought the decorations from Party City & made a few things myself. I ordered a custom cake that will be picked up the morning of the party. Our balloon order will be picked up the day before.
We ordered pizzas through the party place.
I put together the favor bags last night...after an extra run to Party City for more yo-yo's! lol
I am stressing now over the cake & whether it will be enough for everyone, since there will be more people than we thought. I'm glad I bought a cupcake display b/c I think I'll be making some after all!
We still have to get bottles of water, soda, etc.
No stress here! We're just doing dinner with my MIL/FIL and mom the night before B's birthday. Pizza, salad and maybe cake. No pressure, no planning...I love it! I'm SO busy this year in December it seems, I don't think I could have handled planning another "big" birthday (not that B's 1st birthday was big either, but ya know...)
My little man at 0-1-2
We're doing a low key family only breakfast party on Saturday! Nothing crazy. We have 2 birthdays and Christmas all within 3 weeks (DS1 is Jan 2nd!) So we're keeping it chill.
We're making 2 breakfast casseroles, cupcakes, and DS2 picked out a snowman ice cream cake. Other folks are bringing fruit, donuts, and danishes!
We did this last year too and it was awesome!
