Starbucks & Pregnancy

Here is the deal ladies...

I use to be an avid Starbucks drinker. I would buy drinks from Starbucks anywhere from once to twice a day! I am a gold member and love, love, love my mixed drinks.

My entire pregnancy I have not had any caffeine! I was just wondering do you guys think its okay to get a drink from there like once a week?

I love my caramel frapps, caramel mochs, white choc. mochas, etc.

I have not had soda in 7 years, because I gave it up, so I don't have to worry about extra caffeine intake from both. Do you guys still drink Starbucks, and do you think its okay to have it? Any of your doctors said anything about it?

Thanks!

Re: Starbucks & Pregnancy

  • A venti mocha is 150 mg of caffeine. You can totally have one a day. I typically do either decaf or half caff. However, that is because I drink a regular cup of coffee at home. I have to have caffeine every day or I get insane migraines. Enjoy your damn mocha or frapp. It isn't going to harm anything.

  • The odd mixed drink won't harm you. I wouldn't do it daily if the drinks you prefer are high in caffeine but once a week or so shouldn't be a problem. Or you can make them decaf. That's what I've done the few times I hit up Starbucks over the last few months (I would go more often but the closest one to me is 3+ hours away. lol)

  • Frappuccinos contain crack, so you should probably stay away...

Just kidding, it's fine. Just don't add a ton of extra shots. You also can always get it decaf of half-caf if you want (except iced coffee and chai).

  • The Starbucks website tells you how much caffeine is in all of their drinks.  My doctor said keep it under 200-300 mg a day but I usually restrict myself to just a single tall or grande pumpkin spice latte (75/150 mg) a day or a single K-cup at home.

  • Can't you order these decaf if you just miss the taste of the drink and not the caffeine itself?

  • I say go for it! when I do drink from there I get a decaf or half caff but thats just because I drink a soda a day already

  • I'm still drinking a cappuccino every day and baby is fine! :)

  • My MW have said a cup of regular coffee a day is fine, and that is usually what I drink.

  • My OB said 200mg/day last time and my new OB said the same this time. You're fine. I just had a peppermint mocha yesterday and will make one at home in about 15 minutes :

  • I have a strange aversion to coffee since getting pregnant, which is so strange because I normally love coffee.

But I have been drinking green or black tea every morning and treating myself to a chai latte once or twice a week.

Like PPs said, under 300mg of caffeine a day is normally fine!

  • It's fine. Just say under 200-250mg. A tall latte only has like 75 mg. of caffeine.

I drink coffee almost every day.

I wasn't able to drink it at all until about a week ago with this pregnancy which sucked because I get really bad headaches when I don't have caffeine.

OP like everyone has said, keep it under about 250mg and you will be fine.

  • I worked there for almost 7 years... if you are really counting your caffeine intake, the caffeine for HOT espresso drinks at Sbux is (75mg/shot):

    Tall - 75mg

    Grande - 150mg

    Venti - 150mg

Same for iced drinks except the Iced Venti size -- these have an extra shot of espresso, so they are 225mg.  Americanos all get extra shots (venti = 4 shots = 300mg), so either stay away from those, get half caf/decaf, or ask the barista to use less shots.

Anything can be made decaf or half caf (with the exception of Chai Tea Lattes), which is what I switched to when I go.  Enjoy it!  DH's favorite is Egg Nog Latte which has always been super gross to me!

  • I drank one cup of caffeinated drink (coffee, tea or diet coke) each day for my entire pregnancy.  Any OB will tell you that 200-300 mg of caffeine is just fine.

  • I am a Starbucks addict also. Twice a day!  I switched to teas because I need caffeine (green tea mostly, sometimes black tea if I need a little extra).  If you stay until 200mg of caffeine a day, you should be fine.

With the mixed drinks, I would be more worried about the sugar content.  Since minimizing intake of sugar is recommended during pregnancy, having a Starbucks mixed drink once a day might not be a good idea.  I wouldn't recommend the sugar-free version either because they sometimes have synthetic ingredients that you would want to avoid anyways during pregnancy.

  • I have starbucks ALL the time. I drank a lot PP and I still drink a lot!!! Go for you!!

  • I'm sure a small or whatever they call it is fine. If I go, I get decaf because if I drink a whole caffeinated one I get sick (which is weird, because caffeinated pop doesn't make me sick).

  • I follow the 300mg limit for caffeine. A shot of espresso from Starbucks is 75mg, so a grande latte would be 150mg. You can also get their drinks in decaf or half caf.

I generally don't drink their coffee while I'm pg because it's much higher in caffeine content than home brewed coffee. I drink a 12oz coffee every morning at home, which is about 200mg.

  • I absolutely LOVE going to Starbucks this time of year. Every year I make special trips whenever they get their Gingerbread lattes. I haven't had coffee since I found out I was pregnant and I really didn't want to start now, but I was dying for a coffee the other day. So I ordered a decaf Gingerbread latte. It was actually better than the regular.  So yes, I still go to Starbucks.  But I make sure to get decaf when I go. My LO is active enough without adding extra caffeine. Lol

  • I usually hit Starbucks with my mom a few times a week, but I am a Dr. Pepper fan too so I just make sure my total Caffiene intake is below 300mg/Day! Enjoy yourself girl!

  • I'm sipping a tall salted caramel mocha latte as I write this.... So my opinion is clear. Enjoy it! Mmmmm so good. I wouldn't drink as much as you do not pregnant but I think a tall every now in then is fine.

  • My Dr. was not concerned about the caffeine as much as he was the sugar content and the risk of Gestational Diabetes. He said my cup of coffee a day was fine even two if I like but to cut down all the sugar.

So you are likely fine on the caffeine but watch out with the sugar better to cup back a little now then have to cut it out completely because you have GD.

  • I had coffee and pop every single day of my pregnancy once I was past the first trimester. My baby is perfectly healthy, sip away!

  • I wasn't a caffeine drinker UNTIL i became pregnant...then it was the only thing that helped my headaches and now I enjoy my Starbucks!  My doc had originally said 2 cups of coffee per day was fine, so I'm sure my pumpkin spice latte is also fine.

  • I have a coffee in the morning and another in the afternoon, plus too much Pepsi. I did it last time too. DS turned out totally awesome.

I was never told to avoid it.

  • Ummm I drink Starbucks a couple times a week and have been since I found out. I get half caf drinks now but one full caffeinated beverage is not going to hurt you either.

  • My first pregnancy I finally gave up on my no-pregnancy plan in the 3rd tri when Pumpkin Spice Lattes showed up... Non-caf just didn't taste the same, but I kept it to once a week. This time I drink half a cup every morning and I'm back to Starbucks once every couple of weeks for my Pumpkin Spice Latte. Just get a tall, you and baby will be just fine!

  • Ive had a single shot espresso/latte a day since my 2nd trimester began and feel fine.  I just make sure if i have a latte during the day that i drink water, tea (decaf), the rest of the day.

  • Frappuccinos were the only thing that got me through m/s during the first trimester.  I would just get decaf, now as I am further along I still get them occasionally.  They have less caffeine then a lot of the other drinks, but still well under the max.

  • my doctor said one cup of starbucks/coffee a day is totally fine as long as I don't get a huge cup.  If I want a grande or venti, I'll get it half-caff.  Since you don't drink soda, you should be fine with one starbucks a day.
    imageimage"">
  • I didn't drink ANY caffeine in my first tri, but my doctor said it was fine to have up to 2 cups of coffee a day.

Now that I'm in my second tri, I get Starbucks every Friday.... it's my little treat to celebrate the fact that I made it through another week! I usually get a caramel frappuccino, I can't get enough.

  • I drink a skinny caramel macchiato 2-3 times a week. I just get a tall decaf instead of a grande
  • I drink peppermint mochas or eggnog lattes at least 3x a week, if I don't have that I usually have at least one cup of coffee a day.  I did it all through my first trimester also.  I did the same thing with DD and she's perfectly fine.

  • Personally, I switched to decaf.  I know that a lot of women drink limited/moderate amounts of caffeine and are perfectly fine, but I like to err on the side of caution.
