Baptism gift?

Ok sorry if this is odd but I really don't know. I am new to this whole realm and not sure what is appropriate. I am going to a catholic baptism today and I am not sure if I am suppose to take a gift. The baby boy is 8 weeks. I don't know if it matters but I am not religious.nbsp;

Eta: I also have no clue what to wear.
How dressy is it?
It's raining and cold and I was hoping to wear Lo in a sling since I'll be by myself and I'm hoping she will sleep/ stay quiet.

Re: Baptism gift?

  • The appropriate gift for Catholic baptisms (in New York, at least) is money. I'm not religious either, but I've been to my share for family members.

  • We're not Catholic, but DS received a mix of gifts, money, and cards for his baptism.

    Most of the gifts were religious in some way (stuffed lamb that plays Jesus Love Me), cross, a doll that says a nighttime prayer, books of prayers, Bible, CD of religious songs).

    This. The aunts will sometimes give a rosary or something along with it but cash is the main thing.

    Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I agree with giving moola.
  • <---Catholic here, cash is the gift given the most.  Although you can give whatever you want.  I like the bible & rosary gift idea but usually the godmother or godfather will give that.  At least in my experience.  As for clothing it depends on the family.  Are they making a big deal about it?  If so, I'd probably wear a dress.  Portuguese?  Definitely dress up!  If not, I'd say casual, nice pants & top, but no jeans.  You don't have to get too dressed up especially since it's not during an actual mass (Sat night or Sunday).

    Ok thank you all so much. I think I'll go to our local hallmark store and maybe get a commemorative picture frame and give that with some money. Also thanks for the outfit advice I was lost on what to wear ESP since its cold and rainy. I was thinking black slacks boots and a nice sweater?

  • We're Catholic and had DS baptism last Saturday. He received a mix of gifts, money, clothes, toys, and religious/commemorative gifts (ceramic cross, crib medallion, blessing a day bibs, engraved picture frames, a small engraved pewter cup with his monogram and a cross). I love the personalized stuff or the religious items. I think your outfit sounds fine. It's dressy, but not formal and not too casual. I wore a sundress with a sweater and kitten heels to DS's ceremony, but it was in FL and about 78 degrees out. If you go the toy route depending how old the child is, there is this adorable Fisher Price Little People Noah's Ark, I so wish DS would have been gifted it! But he's 12 weeks and getting to love looking at/playing with toys.
