I have decided not to accept any baby shower offers as I just recently got married and would have had a bridal shower, wedding, and potentially baby shower all within an 8 month period of time and very much the same guest lists. My husband and I realize that this means that we will be purchasing the bulk of the baby items (but know that likely once baby boy arrives people will send outfits, books, etc.)
I printed out the baby center list and am wondering what you consider must purchase items and what you thought just took up space (to me it seems like a lot of these serve the same purpose, but I have no experience to base that on!)
This is what we're planning on purchasing as far as big equipment (and have been scouring garage sales, etc.)
Rock and Play (this in lieu of a bassinet)
Bouncy Seat (with vibrate function)
Play Mat
Exersaucer
Swing
My question is....do you actually need and use all of these pieces?

I found this to be a good resource:

We will also be getting a Rock & Play to use instead of bassinet, & we already bought a bouncy seat.
In my opinion, and I might change my mind about it once LO actually comes, but a swing seems to have the same purpose as a bouncy seat. I know some babies prefer one over the other, they may hate the bouncy seat & love the swing or vice versa but I don't plan on buying a swing, unless she really hates the bouncy seat.
The play mat & exersaucer we will get but isn't something we would need right off the bat, I plan on getting the other things that we will use right away first, unless there is a really good deal.
We will be skipping the play mat if we don't get it as a gift (a blanket and some small toys will work fine too), the rock and play which I just don't think will come in handy in our small home, and the exersaucer (I'd rather have a johnny jump-up type gadget instead).
We are doing a swing and a bouncer but I know some people feel that they're pretty interchangeable. I know that my parents swore by them for getting me to nap in the daytime, and my nephew also needed the motion to lull him to sleep for quite a while too. We wanted the bouncer so that I could bring the baby into the kitchen with me and still have them entertained and safe while I make meals.
Personally:
I would get either the swing OR the bouncy seat, since they serve a pretty similar function.
And I wouldn't bother investing in the exersaucer until the baby's actually able to use it (I've always waited until I put the swing away and then put the exersaucer in the same spot).
It's hard to say, because you never know what your LO will take to - my DD hated the swing and we never used it. She loved the bouncy seat. I found the play mat helpful, but like PP wrote, it's not really necessary. She loved the exersaucer when she was big enough to use it.
I would definitely check out craigslist for deals - I had sold all of our baby stuff in like new condition for less than half of what it cost. Now I just have to rebuy it all again
And I would buy the same things - except for the swing, and we used a cosleeper (not the rock and play).
None of those items are NEEDED. Are they nice to have? Sure. We had all of them but a RNP, and had a jumperoo instead of an exersaucer. Personally, I liked having both the swing and bouncy seat, because they served different purposes. The bouncy seat we could carry around the house to use in whatever room we were in, and the swing was nice to use in the family room and have her up out of the reach of the dogs. Plus, she ended up liking both of them. I never missed having a RNP, and have heard far too many people say they had a hard time transitioning their LO to sleeping flat on their back after getting used to the RNP, so we wont be getting one this time either. The play mat, DD looooooved, same with the jumperoo. Although, by the time she was ready for the jumperoo, she was over the play mat. Personally, I will always recommend a jumperoo over an exersaucer, because babies generally really enjoy jumping.
Really its all personal preference and what you can afford. Dont feel like you HAVE to have any of it.
- I don't have any experience with the RNP but have heard good things. If you are planning on getting a PNP though you could get one with a bassinet option to save on that.
- a bouncy seat is good to have. ours vibrated. it was just a simple, inexpensive one but it worked great.
- play mat is unnecessary, IMO
- we did not use an exersaucer... it would have been nice to have one probably, but we have a small house and just didn't want it taking up space
- a swing is nice but some babies hate them. we got one after our son was born and we realized how soothed he was by swinging motion.
