Baby Names

nickname assistance

Can you think of a nickname for Steven that doesn't include Steve?

How about a nickname for Gregory that doesn't include Greg?

These are family names that we would like to use but don't like the nicknames for them and we think people will shorten them even if we don't want them shortened.

  • It's a stretch, but maybe Van for Steven?

I've got nothing for Gregory - gory is probably not a great idea :)

  • I actually know a Steven that goes by Stan b/c he doesn't like Steve. There was a Gregory on HS that everyone just called G. He really didn't like his name at all either. Sometimes though a nn is just spontaneous and had nothing to do with the actual name.

  • Initial thoughts were same as PP's

Steven = Van (a guy in High School did this)

Gregory = Rory (a Friends b/f goes by this for Gregory)

other ideas (that I assume you'll either love or hate lol)

Steven = Sev, Teven, Stan, Stevie, or Stevo

Gregory =  Ori (Ory), Greggy, Grey,Reggie, Reg

OR maybe go be the MN for the NN? My aunt hated her first name so from like 3 yrs old apparently she started using her MN :)

  • I went to school with a boy who went by Steven and it was never shortened.

  • Try using a nickname that doesn't involve the name, maybe a nickname by personality trait would be better for you.

My cousin Stephen really loves the letter Z (probably why his oldest daughter is Zoe) and he spells Steve with a Z when he writes it down (Zteve) - it's quirky but it's his thing.  Maybe let the kid pick his own nickname, let it come organically.

  • You could also do initials ? a Stephen with a middle name beginning with Am or two middles A and M could go by Sam; a Gregory Ulysses could go by Gus.
  • It's possible they'll never get shortened (I know a Stephen who goes by Stephen) but if  you really dislike the nns, I would go with different names. That's the reason I nixed the name Patrick.
