How many ounces at 8 weeks?

Just curious, how many ounces is or was your LO eating at one time at 8 weeks old?

No matter what, LO never takes more than 3 or 4 ounces at a time. Even if she's been sleeping for 5 hours, which is rare, that's all she'll eat. I feel like she would sleep longer and be happy longer if she would eat more. She's up every 2 or 3 hours almost every night. Maybe once a week I will get a 5 hour stretch from her. I have a pedi appointment next week and I'll see what he says...just wondering if this is common?

ETA she is FF. Not too much trouble with gas either, thank goodness. So she's not in pain or uncomfortable, just not interested in eating.

  • I am in the same boat. DS is 7 weeks and is FF and gets breastmilk. He never takes more than 3 ounces at a time, even if he has gone awhile. He is up to eat every 3 hours at night...bah! How much does your LO weigh? DS is only 9 lbs so I am hoping he eats more and goes longer once he weighs more.

  • Not sure, but I'd estimate around 11 pounds. She's definitely not having trouble gaining.

  • We are the opposite! She eats 5 oz every 3-4 hrs.  Usually doing a 6 hr stretch at night.  She would probably eat more if we let her.  She eats so fast that she cries for a minute or 2 when she is done b/c she thinks she's still hungry.  Once her body realizes she's full shes content and happy.  Somedays I think she would end up doing 7 - 5 oz bottles, but I'm afraid that's to much so I really try to hold off. She's right around 12 pounds probably getting close to 13.

  • Mine eats 34 every three hours. He's almost eight weeks. He has wake time after eating then naps. He's buy the last two nights i added half scoop of formula to his bottle and he's started sleeping over 8 hrs at night. Lets hope he keeps doing that. Think the little bit of formula helps.
  • I could have written this exact post. 8 weeks today and FF, she eats 34 ounces something less and wants to eat every 22.5 hours even at night. It's awful.

  • My DD eats every 4 hours during the day, cluster feeds after dinner and sleeps from 10:30ish to 7-8 am. She is bf but eats 3.5 oz in a bottle. She has slept all night all but 3 nights her entire life. I wouldn't put formal in your bottles without dr reccomendation.
  • DD is 8wks and eats 3-4 oz every 3 1/2 to 4 hours.  At night she sleeps 8-9 hours and then when she wakes up she'll eat 5-6oz, then go back to sleep for another 4-5 and eat another 4-5 oz when she wakes up.

3-4 oz is a perfectly acceptable amount to eat. Honestly I would NOT try to force my baby to eat more than they are interested in eating. They know their limits and if you force it they are just likely to throw it up. I mean I suppose if you really wanted her to take more you could try to add in an extra half ounce and then slowly work your way up or something. But at this age their stomachs are still so tiny, and I think its important to respect that. Could you try a dream feed? If you are bottle feeding could you try and make sure she is eating every 2 hours during the day?
