2nd Trimester

What is your caffiene intake?

This is probably more for second or third time moms...with your first baby how much caffiene did you drink and do you notice anything with your baby? I have a cup of coffee every morning, and maybe once or twice a week ill have a soda in the afternoon. Do you think I'm causing harm and should stop? Or did you do the same thing and everything is fine?

Re: What is your caffiene intake?

  • It's safe if you keep your caffeine intake to under 300 mg a day. I have probably 100 mg on average- sometimes none, sometimes a bit more.

  • Zero.  I know its not a necessity, but its a personal choice.  Only caffiene I get is from the small amount of chocolate I treat myself to when the craving arises.  I've also used a small mocha from work to help with bad headaches on occasion.

  • My OB says up to 200 mg per day is completely safe.  That is what I have followed, some days I have no caffeine, others I am closer to 200 mg.

  • This is definitely a question for your doctor.

My doctor is totally fine if I keep my caffeine intake under 200mg per day.  Some days (where I am dog tired or have continuous headaches) I will get close to that amount where as other days I may have a 12oz coke (34mg)

This. Minus the mocha. I've never been a coffee person, so that helps. My sister drank however much coffee she wanted during all 3 of her pregnancies, and all her babies were pretty fussy, and as toddlers or small children they are NUTS. They never sit still. However, this could just be because my sister and her husband are both really hyperactive. (I'm really hoping for/looking forward to a chill, low-key kid like me and DH.)

Keep it to what you're doing and you (and baby) will be fine. One cup of coffee and soda a day isn't that much.

  • With my first I kept my caffeine intake to zero.  With this one I have been a bit more liberal, but still pretty minimal.  On really rough mornings I will get a tall mocha from Starbucks, but I've never looked up the actual mgs.  I do not make it a regular thing if for no other reason than the fact that caffeine makes me really wired so I can't imagine the physiological symptoms I have aren't impacting the baby somehow, but clearly that is due to my own body chemistry more than anything else.

  • I definitely drink more caffeine this time than I did with my first pregnancy but I'm still at about 36mg a day.  I just drink 1 drink a day this time where last time I drank 1 caffeinated drink every couple of days.  My kid is fine and this one will be too.

  • You're fine!  With DS, I didn't drink any at all, but I was always told up to 200mg per day is fine.  With this baby, I don't mind have a Pepsi every once in awhile, sometimes a few a day depending on how rough the day is going. :)  As long as you aren't gulping down red bulls or something, you'll be fine.

  • I do not limit myself but I have never been much of a caffeinated drink person anyways. I have an ice-tea or earl-grey sometimes. With my first I drank a cup of coffee a day! Not that I love coffee but I was having chronic migraines. (and with the 60lbs I gained they didn't want me drinking juice or pop) I learned this pregnancy it was from gluten intolerance and have had almost none to speak of now being gluten free. I wouldn't stress yourself too much over moderate amounts. My son slept fine was healthy and is doing well still.

  • I don't drink it every day, but I try to limit myself to one cup of coffee (90-100mg) or a couple cans of Coke Zero (34mg/can). I'll splurge on a grande drink at SB now and then, but very rarely, and the boys definitely go nuts when I do lol

  • With DD, I avoided caffeine entirely in the first trimester and after that had a cup or two of coffee a few times a week. I rarely had any soda. I didn't notice any effects whatsoever with her.

This pregnancy, I've been having one cup of coffee a day. It's the equivalent of about 150 mg. of caffeine. If I'm going to have a soda or other high caffeine beverage/food, I don't have my morning coffee that day.

  • I had close to none with my son. With my daughter though, I worked at Starbucks while putting myself through nursing school during the beginning part of pregnancy so lets just say I had PLENTY of caffeine when pregnant with her. Probably well over the recommended amount.

My daughter is actually the one that is in AP classes and excels at sports. They both have hyperative tendencies but that's because of me and genetics ( I have so many ppl that jokingly say I have ADHD).

This time around we had trouble conceiving so I had decreased caffeine greatly because I had read that fertilty docs recommended less than 50 mgs per day and we were about to start IVF when we got pregnant. On average I consume maybe 25 mgs per day with decaf coffee and chocolate. I plan to up it a few days a week though since I start 12 hours shifts tomorrow.

  • I usually have 1 small coffee (8-10 oz. from Dunkin or McDonald's or something similar) about 5 days a week. Sometimes (usually on days I don't have coffee) I'll have an iced tea. This is probably slightly more than I had with #1 but not much.
  • With my first not a drop! He is the most hyperkid ever! :. My second a can of diet coke every day. He was a very mellow baby and now at 4 he is just a normal 4 yr. this baby I have one every once and awhile but not much.
  • Coffee started grossing me out around 10 weeks. Ill have the occasional caffeinated pop or Starbucks but day to day I'm not drinking much. My first pregnancy I tried to keep it to two caffeinated drinks a day.

  • I have had a 12 oz cup of coffee every morning for all of my pregnancies. I also occasionally have a soda or iced tea. I just stay under the 300 mg limit. I really don't think it's effected behavior in my kids.

My doctor said I should keep it under 200 mg, not 300.

I have a frappuccino from Starbuck's once a week, and I have had soda two or three times. I try really hard not to have too much, but occasionally I just have to!

  • This is my first, but I normally have a glass of tea at night and perhaps a soda occasionally. But I would keep it under 300 mg. My SIL drank soda all day everyday and her kids are unruly and always have been.

  • with my first pregnancy i had a coke or iced coffee if i felt like it, sometimes one a day for several days in a row, sometimes none for a week. occasionally i'd have a couple glasses in a day but made sure not to go over 100 mg. my doctors told me to stay away from starbucks cause they said the coffees have more caffeine in them. never verified that. i've been similar with this pregnancy. my son is super active, but smiley and sweet and very well behaved. he's only 11 months though!

I drank Mt. Dew frequently with my DS 6 yrs ago. Young and uninformed at the time. My SIL drank NO caffeine at all with either of her DDs. We are constantly complimented on how polite and well behaved our DS is. My nieces are complete terrors that no one can stand to be around. It's how they are raised. Not what mom drank. I keep my intake below 300mg but Im honestly not worried.

  • zero. I stopped drinking caffeine when I found out I was pregnant with baby #1.  I had a few headaches the first week.  It doesn't bother me to drink Caffeine free soda and decafe starbucks foo foo drinks.  I BF #1 till pregnant with #2 and still have not had any Caffeine.  I think I have gone so long now with out it, I won't go back to drinking it.

  • With DS, I didn't drink ANY caffeine.  I wouldnt take zofran no matter how sick i was...Not even a tylenol for  headache.  He's a normal 3.5 year old boy= he's crazy!  He's perfect but darn...he has a lot of energy.  He was the worst baby never slept.

With this one, I'm not stressing.   I drink diet soda once in a while because it calms my stomach.  I take Zofran.  The ultrasound only showed one head...so, so far, so good :)

  • Meh. To each their own. Many women don't drink it at all, but most doctors will say that anything from 200mg-300mg in a day is completely fine.

I honestly didn't monitor my intake much, because the main drink I have is tea. Occasionally I'd drink a coffee or soda if I wanted one, but I honestly didn't monitor the intake I had much.

    (Almost) Anything in moderation.

  • In first tri I will go for 1 or 2 cups of coffee throughout the day and maybe a tea in the evening if I am exhausted. Now I am drinking  1 to 3 coffees and some pepsi here and there. Oh and chocolate. Daily chocolate. DS was an easy pregnancy and very easy sleepy baby so it must not have  bothered him at all. I also drank some while breastfeeding/pumping.
