How often does LO play independently.

Now that Gabriel is crawling I find he is playing more independently. He isn't as interested in having me play with him. I'm still generally on the floor with him and we still do stories, etc. Does anyone else find that their kid is now happily playing on their own now that they're mobile?

Re: How often does LO play independently.

  • Aria is playing independently a little more these days. She'll crawl away and explore, but always where she can see me. After about ten minutes, she'll come back and we have to hug, then she's off for more playing. It's like she's saying, "Oh Mommy! I had the best time, but I missed you so much! Ok, I need to play again! See ya!"

I simultaneously love it and hate it.

  • PJ will play happily by himself as long as DH or I am in the room.  We don't have to be interacting, but as soon as we are out of his line of sight, he freaks out.  I'm not saying we leave him in a room alone...we have an open floorplan kitchen/living room, and I might run to the kitchen to grab something or finish cooking (while constantly watching him); he has trouble seeing over the couch to see us if we're in the kitchen or bathroom, and this causes him to become very upset.

  • DD has definitely been more independent in her playing since she's been crawling, and even more so since she's been pulling up! She can spend half an hour pulling up on the ottoman, playing with whats on it, sitting down, repeat. Its nice to be able to make breakfast or whatever and have her entertained!

  • The girls play without us a gold amount. Usually they play with different toys, then one will go and steal the other one's toy, Natalia will try to pull out Olivia's hair, screaming ensues, we put them in opposite corners to play, rinse and repeat :) Natalia had been good about listening when we said "no!" but starting yesterday she's just decided its funny. If we leave the room once they notice they'll come find us. If we keep them contained and aren't in the room with them they get annoyed quickly, but as long as they're free to come and go and check in with us from time to time they're good. During the week when we're at work all day we don't give them much independent play time because we want to hang out with them.

  • I would say about 10-15 minutes if we are in the room with her.  If I walk into the kitchen, which is connected to the Living Room she is right behind me.  (I call her my third leg)  If the TV is on she will probably go 30 minutes.  She goes from her toys to the TV to the fish tank, rinse and repeat.  She may come to me for a minute or two and we play with a toy and then she goes back on her journey.

  • Logan is happy playing on his own as long as I sit within 2 feet of him, haha! I swear he could care less that I'm there but the minute I try to go anywhere he screams his head off. Fun!

  • DD plays independently most of the time. She wants to explore everything.

I'm always in the same room as her and I usually sit on the floor with her(and bump or meal plan or whatever). She will crawl over to me and climb all over me for a minute and then wander off to explore something else.

  • Yes, for sure!  Logan is perfectly happy exploring the toys I place around the room without me.  He just crawls from one to the other all on his own. I just jump in once in a while to sing or help him practise walking.
