saving milk during trip

I exclusively pump and have the most awful supply ever (seriously, I could probably win a prize for worst supply), so every drop counts. I have to fly 4 hours away for a meeting and stay overnight. But I just hate the idea of pumping and dumping even for such a short while. Is there anyway I can actually save my milk? Those mini fridges in hotel rooms don't have freezers do they? And in any case the milk will go off during transit/ travel time (about 8-9 hours) won't it? Doesn't make sense to buy a cooler for 7.5 ounces which is all I will produce in a day anyway - unless someone knows of a smaller device that would do this. Any ideas, or do I just have to suck it up?

  • What about a small lunch box with ice packs?

  • If the hotel has a minifridge, there is usually a small freezer at the top.  The milk is good for about 2 weeks in that type of freezer.

Also, the hotel may store it in a freezer for you if you ask...

This is what I would do... take a small lunchbox or cooler (my Medela PISA came with a little cooler and ice pack) and just keep all the milk in the fridge.  If it did freeze while you were in the hotel, you'd be on the clock to either keep it frozen or use it.  Milk lasts 5-8 days refrigerated so just keep it cool and you'd be ok to either use it or freeze it when you get home.

This. Milk can last up to 8 days in the fridge. Just make sure you keep it cold in some time of small lunchbox.

  • The most updated regulations allow for carrying on breastmilk in excess of 3oz even without the child flying with you as long as you declare it before screening.

  • Ha. You raise good points and good questions. Which has made me go over the logistics of this once more. And I've figured that in fact I won't have access to fridge/ freezer for much longer than 8 hours as I have to check out at 9am, then do the meeting, come back and pick up bags, and then catch my flight at 11pm. So now what? Is it too weird to ask if the hotel can refrigerate it for me until 9pm ish? I can check a bag in so the 3oz limit isn't such a big deal technically.

What about a cooler with dry ice in it? You can get it at  the grocery store. My DH and I did this when our power went out and I didnt wanna lose my freezer stash. it worked well and I am pretty sure it would last you all day!
