transition to laying down

I know this has been asked before, but I can't find anything and am too lazy to keep looking.  K has all of a sudden started waking up as soon as we lay her down in her crib or PnP.  she's asleep soundly in our arms, we wait a solid 10-15 minutes before putting her down, but once her head hits a flat surface, it's eyes wide open.  this has only been happening for the past three or four days.  I am guessing she;s just becoming more aware, but I don't know what to do.  Suggestions?

  • We have used a heating pad on the pnp or crib prior to laying LO down so they feel the warmth and think they are still being held. We also swaddle and use a pacifier when the eyes fly open too sometimes the sucking lulls LO back to sleep.

  • Happening to us as well. Don't know what to do either. Hopefully some folks have ideas.

  • Oh that's a good idea. I assumed it was in part the going from hot skin to cold cloth.

So you lay the heating pad down for a bit while you are rocking or whatever, then take it out when you put LO down?  Just making sure I understand because I am way tired right now!

Yep I put heating pad on the surface while I nurse/rock etc but remove it when I lay lo down.

  • I read someplace, please don't flame me that it takes about 30min for baby to hit there REM sleep, maybe try holding her longer. That's what I do

    All of this!

  • I was trying to break DS of the habit that he needed to be held to sleep. The Snugabunny rock and play worked wonders but now I'm trying to break him from the habit of sleeping at in incline in the RNP to sleeping flat on his back on a mattress. What worked for us last night is that I feed him and then, while I'm on the bed, I bend my knees and have DS on his back on my thighs. I let him sit there for 20 mind to help get him sleeping and help milk drain to his tummy. During that time I slowly lower my knees so that by 20 mins he's flat on his back on my thighs. Oh, he's also in a swaddle sleep blanket if on his back without it, his arms would flail and startle him awake. One he's been flat on my legs for a few mins I can move him to the mattress.
  • I'm finding if I lay LO down right before he's about to fall asleep, he'll fall asleep in the RNP or Swing and stay asleep.

I've also considered putting a heating pad in the RNP/swing before I lay him in it to warm it, and then take it out right before I put him in to make it feel more snuggly. I haven't done that yet, but I have that idea in the back of my mind.

We also swaddle him most of the time before he sleeps, and I think it helps him that the blanket will smell like me or H.

Ha, I obviously didn't read the responses first. I thought I was a super-genius for thinking of this. ;)
