I tried making a cleaner for my carpet with it, and DD broke out in a really bad rash. I don't know if it was related, but I'm afraid to try it again! There are mixed viewpoints on it. EWG.org gives it an F rating on their cleaning database, but David Suzuki's site takes the stance that it's still better than most.
For laundry, I've been using soap nuts that I grind in an old coffee grinder and mix with baking soda 1/3 to 2/3 baking soda. I use about 3 tbsp in a load.
If it needs an extra boost (or stains), I do a pre-soak in the laundry tub with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.
Borax is NOT ant bait. Like the PP said, it is boric acid which is in ant bait. I have used borax for years in laundry detergent, and my mother used just borax to clean cloth diapers and I plan on doing the same.

Ant bait has boric acid - not the same thing.

Here are two great sites that I have seen that have done their own research on the safety of borax. Site One: https://www.crunchybetty.com/getting-to-the-bottom-of-borax-is-it-safe-or-not
Site Two: https://engineeringhomemaking.blogspot.com/2012/10/borax-safe-or-toxic.html
Both do say that it is a choice you have to make.
