lol this is always one of my favourite posts to read.
I also hate Winnie the Pooh nurseries.

My u/o is that I think crib bumpers are safe if used correctly.
Maybe I should have saved this for FFFC lol Tongue Tied

agreed about the bumpers!  My mom used them, i used them with my first two...im not worried about it.

    Agreed to both!

Let's hear your unpopular opinions this week!!

If we have a girl, i will donate anything that we get that is overly frilly or says things like 'diva', 'princess', 'daddy's girl' etc. i hate that.

On a similar note, if we have a boy, i will kick DH in the groin if he calls him 'slugger'. He did that during my last pregnancy and i almost had a heart attack.

  • Looks like my UO is opposite of most here because I love Winnie the Pooh themes and sports themes lol. Those were my two top choices for themes. I choose sports though. I am a huge sports lover. He doesn't have to be but while he is still young enough to have me make choices I am going with what I like haha!

OMG, yes! Unfortunately, DH loves all of that crap (and super-frilly pink junk for EVERYTHING...why? b/c little girls are supposed to be "cute"?). I don't mind "Daddy's girl" so much but when it's "princess" or "diva"...NO. My daughter is NOT a princess, no one has any business telling her she's a princess--it may seem like it doesn't matter much, but eventually it will go to her head!

  • I think ALL "themed" nurseries look tacky.

To me, a nursery should be a calm environment with soothing colors and energy.  Having a bunch of crazy patterns/animals/characters/sports/etc is not something we will consider for our nursery.

Our bedroom does not have a theme nor do any of the other rooms in our home. Why does our baby's room need a theme?

  • I agree with the house UO.

My wife and I live in a 2bedroom house. Someone asked if we were moving. Uh what? We have a room. Then baby room. Plus we have a den/study area. Plus the typical living room, kitchen, dining room, etc.

And you know what? We have 2 acres of fenced in yard behind our house and about an acre out front. While we may not have the biggest house, we have plenty of yard space for our kids to run around in, build an epic swingset/jungle gym, build an awesome treehouse/clubhouse, etc. Plus we can "camp" in our back yard, have a fire pit, etc.

I think we have enough room.

I second that. When DH told my SIL that baby's a girl, her response was, "Ooh! So what's the nursery theme going to be?" Erm...1) not having a nursery and 2) it doesn't need a THEME!

I've gotten quite a few side eyes for not having a nursery or a theme. Until FB and Pinterest came a long, were there themes and crap? I maintain that shiiit is for the adults, NOT the baby.

I agree- the whole theme thing is for the adults lol.

However, the nursery is a room that we also plan on using for our daughter as she grows up. Our crib does the whole morphing thing into a toddler bed and then breaks apart into the headboard and footboard. As she grows up, we want her to feel comfortable that that is "her" space where she can rest, play, nap, whatever.

Obviously this isn't important in the beginning and not sure why people would give you looks about not having a nursery/room for the baby right away. I would say a majority of people keep newborns with them for the first few months anyway.

i guess my uo is i love disney....dh and i just spent a week there....bought lo it's first pair of mickey ears....registered for finding nemo bedding and some other random disney related baby items...

i have no problem with licensed characters....i'm sure when it's born we'll get it either some princess/girlie disney clothes or mickey or marvel clothes....esp super hero stuff...dh is a comic book nerd

I love Disney too!! And I totally plan on having my little girl be a princess if she wants to. I registered for a mini chandelier from Ikea for the nursery! The only reason I didn't ask for a Disney related nursery is cuz it was too expensive! lol

I used to work for Disney at Disney World! I love Disney and I'm as sarcastic and snarky as they come :) If you hate on something, most likely that's what your kid will want!

Nope it's honest! And I agree.

My UO is that I can't stand all the sports stuff for little boys. I'm having a boy and while, yes, it'd be nice if he was into sports what if he's not? What if he's not athletically inclined? I certainly am not! And it's pretty cliche. It just is a little frustrating to do a boy's nursery because everything is usually sport or jungle theme and I don't like either!

SO THIS!!! Not all boys are into monster trucks and sports! I actually said "Boys like flowers and bugs and books too!" when MIL and SIL started planning our shower. I really hope they took my suggestion of a pirate theme or something cute and silly rather than BOYSHIT!!!!!! as a theme. I've done them for friends and always cringed. You throw a football or baseball themed shower then your son will be a chemical engineer who loves ballet and fishing. LOL

Amen. Baby will be with me for six months at least and I personally want a calm, soothing place to sleep. Bedrooms are for BED. When I was growing up my brother and I shared a room and we had a TV/play room with all our stuff in it. Our room was where we slept, read, did homework, but playing was for outside or in the den/extra room.

I don't like it when people (specifically on the bump) state that the most expensive baby items are the best. The thing that really bugs me is strollers. Anyone that states that a $300-$500 stroller is the absolute best and the only way to go, obviously has a lot of money and has never used a basic stroller. I love my Graco stroller. It gets the job done and I've had no issues with it, I can't imagine spending $300-$500 on a McClaren or BOB stroller.

I'll agree to this. Most things out there (IE Cribs) have specific guidelines and standards they have to meet. I love our cribs, and we paid under $100 for each of them, rather than $600 for one.

I will say this though. After playing around with so many double strollers - I really do want the City Mini Select GT (double). Am I really going to pay $500 for it. No way in hell. I have my Combi that I paid 1/5 the price for and I'm sure it is going to work just fine. Will I turn it down as a gift/or on a great sale? No.

I have been searching Craiglist in every town in a 2 hour radius of ours for one of these!  I am obsessed with it, but will not pay that price!

Whoa, there are a lot of assumptions here. I don't have a lot of money and I HAVE used a basic stroller. That  being said, as a BOB owner, I can say it  IS GREAT and I definitely recommend it. A) I didn't pay for it - my boss gave it to me as a gift and B) It is really good for where I live - in the mountains - with lots of unpaved trails that we are out on, on a daily basis. A plastic $100 stroller just wouldn't survive or make the ride at all pleasant for mom or baby.

I wish someone would buy me a double BOB for this next baby, but since I'm requesting no shower, I am searching Craig's List for a good used one.

That is what I did for DS, but the clothing is waht I found to be an issue. Everything has sports stuff on it. I love sports and I hope Carter loves sports, but seriously, does every shirt and onesie NEED to have a baseball basketball soccer ball ect on it? BLAH!

Well I was thinking of doing Harry Potter because I'm a huge nerd but it kind of turned into an owl/forest friends theme since HP specific stuff was hard to find. It's still hard to try and make it not girly since a lot of owl stuff is pink/sparkly.

And I agree about the clothes! My husband and I have yet to buy any clothing sports related. I think I have one monkey thing...because it's really cute otherwise I don't really dig monkeys for little boys either.

I am doing the same theme! I like the woolrich woodland theme on target.com, there isn't a lot though

     Yes

Also, anyone who runs or hikes doesn't sing the praises of a $100 generic umbrella stroller over a Baby Jogger or a BOB.

While I agree that *some* strollers are priced at outrageous levels not necessarily corresponding with features.  There are some cases where you get what you pay for, and I'd throw my $100 stroller off a cliff if I tried to hike with it.  (Even though it's wonderful for the mall.)

After buying and HATING 3 different strollers - a Graco, a Valco, and a Costco brand - we sold them all and splurged on a Bugaboo. It is the single best investment, aside from our home of course, that our family has ever made. I absolutely adore it, as does MH. I am so excited to use it again for our new LO and do not regret the $1200 spent on it. We don't have that kind of money now, but at the time were able to afford it. I say go for it with the expensive strollers, they are absolutely worth it IMO! As long as you aren't going into debt of course!

ME TOO!!! I actually can't stand any disney stuff. DH doesn't get my "hate" for it but I think it looks so cheap and tacky! Glad I'm not the only one that avoids Disney (and other licensed) stuff.

My DH is the same way... DD wants to be Cinderella for Halloween and it is KILLING me.  I am trying to find the least tacky costume I cant, and it's impossible. She was Minnie Mouse last year, but her costume was super cute and it was from ETSY.  For some reason Minnie doesn't bother me, the princesses and all the other characters I can't stand.

There is nothing worse the seeing a grown woman with a Disney character sweatshirt or a liscence plate.   (Sorry if I am offending anyone!)

Have you checked out Pinterest? I saw some cute "tutu" inspired princess costumes. I can't remember if there was a Cinderella. Lemme look and I'll edit if I find it.

    Edit: Here are some- https://pinterest.com/search/?q=tutu+costume

Lots of different ideas for something so she can still feel like a princess but you can make it so you make it as frilly or uncheesy as you want :)

I should not have not have looked at that.  Now I want to buy them ALL.

I found one used and spent 1/3 of the price on it (off craigslist). I do *want* some more expensive items and for those, I look to gently used.

My UO is that I'm dreading my mother and father's involvement with my new LO. My mom is self centered and has low credibility and doesn't follow through with promises and my dad has been overheard speaking poorly about my sisters' husbands and their children. I really.don't.want. to deal with all that.

Mine is I hate Winnie The Pooh.  And whenever I hear someone is decorating their nursery in Winnie The Pooh, I side eye them (in real life, not on here).  I also hated when anyone gave DD anything Pooh  related.  I'll admit it got put in the back of the closet and she never wore.  I'd give it away with the tags still on it.  Luckily, she has shown no interest in Pooh.

I also HATE Pooh nurseries... ISH!!

While I dont hate Winnie the Pooh, I do hate Winnie the Pooh nurseries and clothing. I dislike all cartoon character clothing for babies. Granted my 3 year old refuses to wear anything besides Spiderman.

  • I cannot stand when other mothers think just because their kids are older they are wiser mothers and no more and think they are better than those with young ones. I understand you have been through the baby stages already but dont act like a know it all just because your kids are older. Each kid is different as is each mother. Grrrr!!!

  • I'm with you all on the WTP and Disney gear. While I like WTP and absolutely LOVE all the Disney movies (mostly the classics, not so much the ones that have come out in the past 5-10 years), not one of my children will ever wear the clothing. If they want to dress up as a character for Halloween, great. However, I will never, EVER buy anything that has any of the above on it. I also wouldn't decorate my nursery in either theme.

My big UO for today, I think the iPhone is overrated.

Now things like breast pumps, the more expensive ones truly do a better job and is something to not skimp on because it could mean the difference of making BFing work or not.

Haha, see, it was given to you, other wise you would not have purchased it. I also live in the mountains, and my Graco did great on the trails.
