pink discharge (TMI!)

I put a tampon in today cos I was so sure AF was showing up (1 day late) and when I took it out there was pink discharge on the tip that hasn't flowed out since. ?Normal?

I think so. AF usually starts that way for me.

Sure, but using a tampon preemptively is not great for your vaginal tissue. Try a pantiliner or maybe consider a menstrual cup.
