Walking dog with baby

For those with dogs and no yards - do you bring the baby in the stroller or the carrier when you go walk the dog? We had a dog when LO was born, but I was so overwhelmed with a newborn that our super's kid walked him whenever I was home alone with the baby. That dog passed away from cancer a month after LO was born, and we just got a new dog. I walked her yesterday with the stroller, but it was kind of clumsy pushing the stroller (we have a City Select, so it's like an SUV) and walking her. Does anyone find it easier to use a carrier?

Re: Walking dog with baby

  • Yes! We have a yard, and Olivia has started to dislike the ergo, so I don't walk the dog often. However, I found it much easier using the carrier. I was always tripping over the dog/running him over with the stroller.

  • I have 2 dogs 55 lbs or so each and we go for walks with LO. If it is just a short walk or when it isn't so hot outside the carrier is definitely easier. When it will be a longer walk or if it is hot LO is in his stroller and each of the dogs has a Halti one wears the head harness and the other hated that so wears the no pull chest harness by Halti. This works pretty well for us!
  • I've been walking my Lab with DD for four and a half months.  When she was really little, the stroller was too hard, so I wore her in the ring sling.  It just made squatting to pick up poop a little difficult.  If we go for a quick walk, I pop her in the sling or the Ergo.

Now, we go for a mile-long walk every night when I get home from work.  We use the stroller now--it took the dog a little getting used to, but she's okay with it now.  She wears a regular leash and has learned "Leave It".

  • We alternate when it is super hot we use the stroller, if S has been in the carrier already that day we stroller, if S has been in the stroller like at stroller bootcamp we use carrier. I perfer using the stroller because I have a place for my water bottle, phone, keys etc. Our dog is 95lbs but an excellent walker.

  • With both dogs in the morning I find it easier with the carrier, but in the evenings I like to take the stroller with just my little dog. She's learned how to walk with the stroller pretty well and stay out of the way. The bigger dog has a bum knee right now so he can't keep up on our longer walks.

  • I much prefer the carrier with the exception that picking up poop is a bit awkward.

  • I have the Britax Bagile, and I much prefer stroller to carrier. I keep the dog on a shorter lead, and hold the leash close with one hand, and then more slack with the other. As long as I don't let her to far, she doesn't trip in the wheels. And I keep a pretty steady pace, so she's a great walker.

  • No yard and I use a carrier every single time. The stroller seems impossible to manage with two dogs. Carrier is easy! The hardest part is picking up the poop. You get a good thigh workout from squatting!

  • I tried once to walk our lab with baby in the stroller.  Did not go well.  Now if we go for walks, I either put baby in the Bjorn and walk the dog or we go on a 'family walk' and one of us takes the baby and one takes the dog.

  • This post inspired me to go for a walk with DD in the k'tan and BOTH dogs.

It went well except for a couple logistical problems when bagging their poo. I did not factor that in.

  • way easier with a carrier!
