The house is more conservative right now, right? So, if Mittens were elected, he might have an easier time pushing through some of his more asinine views, such as overturning abortion laws and all that.
I don't think it's unreasonable to be nervous about this possiblity.
The Senate is more liberal though.
I 100% agree that people need to pay more attention to their local and state elections.
However, I think that when you KNOW a candidate holds a completely different view than you do on an issue that you find very important to you personally, it's hard to ever vote for them.
I understand why my very religious grandparents and parents vote Republican. Abortion and gay marriage are major convictions for them. While I disagree with their stance, I also couldn't vote in the opposite manner for the same reason. It just so happens that I also believe the democratic party is better for our economy.

Yeah, it sucks for me because I morally believe more liberal views yet I think Republicans are better for the economy long-term.
With that being said I think people give too much credit to the President for how our country is doing fiscally and forget about things like business cycles which also majorly influences the economy. It seems like people think Bill Clinton is the bee's knees because our economy flourished during his presidency when in reality it was more that he was in the right place at the right time.
I don't get why people get all paranoid that Republicans are going to steal women's reproductive rights. The majority of the sh!t people say during an election campaign never comes to fruition. They're just trying to appeal to the people who are going to vote for them (and in our country, it's older Americans who go out and vote). Congress is never going to let that sh!t pass so I don't really get the outrage.
Roe v. Wade as NOTHING to do with Congress. If we put a pro-life in the White House and he gets the opportunity to select pro-life Supreme Court Justices, it only takes one case to come before them for them to flip the decision. And with all of the pro-life lobbies, it's a certainty it will happen as soon as the Court is majority pro-life.

This is one of the stupidest things you've ever said. Have you not paid attention to the legislation that has been passing in states all over the country? Women's reproductive rights are already being stolen. Who's to say they won't be further annihilated when another nut gets elected?
I was actually inclined to partially agree with KC, but you bring up a good point as far as the stuff that's already happening. Thanks for the reality check. I do think it's easier for that stuff to happen at the state level than it would be at the federal level, though.
Along these same lines, though...that's how I feel about immigration reform. I get irritated when I hear politicians' positions on it because with the exception of this recent thing from Obama (which has been a long time coming), nothing's even going to get through Congress to the president anyways. Your position is meaningless to me.
Change at the federal level doesn't often happen in one term; this is true. It does, however, happen slowly. Every time you elect an official - congress, senate, president, etc., you leave the doors open for change. I don't care how unlikely it would be for women's reproductive rights to be taken away federally. I am not about to stand behind someone who believes they should be taken away and who might actually be given the power to do so. Consider George Bush's term and the amount of civil liberties that were trampled upon. There are now laws in place that violate the Bill of Rights that were not in place before his presidency. It's much more plausible than KC would have you believe.
Our country is changing drastically and in a direction that scares me. I don't want to be even a tiny part of that change.
Right, and I don't think you should stand behind someone whose beliefs are not in line with your own.
My point was that people are focusing the energy in the wrong place. In the grand scheme of things, the President has little pull as to big changes because of our system of checks and balances. Also, I think a lot of people find what one Republican senator says to be reflective of what the party as a whole believes/what the President plans on doing.
I think seasonal clothing rules are ridiculous. I don't care if it's after Labor Day, it's still 90 degrees here and my kid is wearing seersucker today.
I agree. My kid's going to be wearing her seersucker stuff until it's too cool to comfortably wear it. Same with white shoes and all that jazz.
I know I've asked both of you for smocking tips in the past but I agree! I'm buying little long-sleeved t-shirts to wear under her short sleeves smocked tops so she can wear them in the winter.
I have to write this before I forget, so forgive me if someone actually already said this (I'll go back and read it after).
My UO is that I HATE when girls wear pink jerseys for sports teams.
First of all, you should be proud to wear your team colors. I wear Brown and Orange for my football team and it's ugly, but it makes me happy to wear it.
Second of all, you can't tell what team you are wearing unless you look very very closely.
That's all, now off to read.
I have a bunch of pink stuff that's been gifted over the years, and while I still wear it, I much prefer to wear the actual team colors. Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I need to make sports gear pink.
I don't have any pink sports (baseball... the only sport in our house) gear for DD or I because it drives me insane (pink is my signature color but I still reject pink sports gear) but I have to admit I do have a Cardinals hat with the emblem bedazzled so I'm not sure it's much better...

Same thing could be said about Democrats stealing your gun rights.

As long as you're still rocking your team colors I'm all about bedazzling! I'm also all for fitted jerseys and skirts or dresses that are team-centric. I just don't like the pink.
Random, but all this lawnmower talk reminds me of that episode of Dr. G Medical Examiner, where a lady died while drunk driving her riding mower in the nude. No joke.
I think seasonal clothing rules are ridiculous. I don't care if it's after Labor Day, it's still 90 degrees here and my kid is wearing seersucker today.
Seasonal clothing rules do not apply to children. I prefer to dress my son in white or pale blue year round.
With the constant stream that constantly exits all holes, I almost never dress my son in white or pale blue!
Ditto. Not to mention any child crawling age and above will quickly make sure anything white is beige.
-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.
I think politically people should spend more time worrying about who is winning office at the state level because they have much more influence over their lives than the President will. People's focus is in the wrong place.
Yes, that's an excellent point. I understand the outrage and all with the current election, but you're right that a lot of this starts at a smaller level and it's important to try to nip it in the bud there before it gets to the national scale.
I agree with this, too. However, on a message board like TB I think it's only natural that we discuss national politics.

I couldn't care less about football but am a little saddened that this board has no out rage that I have seen that their will be no hockey this year. I would think atleast the canadians would be out raged.
I hate traditional gender roles and if I was mbenits neighbor I would mow the lawn daily just to piss her off.
